No sacrifice for my child

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

A career woman finds contentment after quitting her job for her daughter's sake. COMMENT by Rafidah Ahmad It has been six years since I resigned from my job as an engineer. The initial reason was that my husband got an offer to further his studies aboard. I was at the peak of my career. I always had this idea about financial freedom and how I could never survive socially by being a housewife. But what needed to be done was done. I knew that going to an industrialised country would be a great opportunity for my then two-year-old daughter, Izdihar Janna, to get better education and treatment for her cerebral palsy. So I resigned. Then, the crazy chase started. We ran around like headless chickens to prepare the necessary documents in order to apply for visas. The requirements were stringent and the documents needed were plenty. Only by August 2008, two months after my resignation, did we manage to send the visa applications. My husband, my then six-year-old son, and I did not have any problem getting the visa approval but Jannas application did not go well. They needed extra documents to support her application because of her disability and … Continue reading

Domestic violence perpetrator speaks about abuse, treatment

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2014

Editors note: This is the final story in the Mirrors In Her Shoes three-part series about domestic violence. Samantha Cavin woke up in jail last year and couldnt remember how she got there. Her friend later told her exactly what happened. Cavin, then 22, was drunk and got into an altercation with her boyfriend at their home. I got mad and I took my head and head-butted him, the Kent resident recalled. My friend told me I went into the room and he was screaming for someone to help him and I took my cell phone that he had broken and hit him several times in the head with it. At the time, he was very scared. Cavin said her boyfriend, who has cerebral palsy and is disabled, was bleeding from his head so she took him into the bathroom and began cleaning him up. I apologized over and over again, I didnt mean to hurt you, she recalled. Then I was handcuffed and went to jail. Cavin was charged with domestic violence assault and a judge ordered her to complete 30 days of domestic violence treatment, attend a panel and do an alcohol assessment. She didnt comply. So when … Continue reading

Muscle Relaxant May Be Viable Treatment for Rare Form of Diabetes

Posted: Published on November 25th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise A commonly prescribed muscle relaxant may be an effective treatment for a rare but devastating form of diabetes, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis report. The drug, dantrolene, prevents the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells both in animal models of Wolfram syndrome and in cell models derived from patients who have the illness. Results are published Nov. 24 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Online Early Edition. Patients with Wolfram syndrome typically develop type 1 diabetes as very young children and need insulin injections several times each day. The syndrome also causes hearing loss, vision problems and difficulty with balance. The researchers found that elevated levels of an enzyme called calpain 2 were the main cause of death in brain cells and insulin-producing cells. Dantrolene blocks that enzyme and also prevents brain cell death in animal and cell models of the disorder. Because the drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), clinical trials in Wolfram patients could get underway relatively quickly, said senior investigator Fumihiko Urano, MD, PhD, the Samuel E. Schechter Professor of Medicine. Wed like to test the drug … Continue reading

MONTPELIER, Vt. - A New York couple who said Botox treatment of their son's cerebral palsy left him with life-threatening complications and sued its manufacturer won a $6.75 million verdict from a federal jury on Thursday. The verdict, in U.S. District Court in Vermont, came three days after the announcement that New Jersey drugmaker Actavis would acquire Botox maker Allergan for $66 billion, one of the biggest acquisitions announced this year. A lawyer for New York state residents Lori and Kevin Drake said Joshua Drake, now 7, suffered calf spasms due to mild cerebral palsy until he got Botox injections to treat them at a Vermont hospital in 2012. The lawyer, Ray Chester, said Joshua has since developed epilepsy and must have an aide with him at all times in case he needs life-saving medications during a seizure. Thursday's verdict came four years after California-based Allergan agreed to pay $600 million, pleading guilty to a federal criminal charge and settling the government's civil complaint that it had improperly promoted Botox for off-label uses including juvenile cerebral palsy. The injections that damaged Joshua were given by a doctor in Vermont at the Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital, now known as the … Continue reading

Stalybridge family to hold fundraiser for brave Harry

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2014

The parents of a little boy with cerebral palsy have organised a fun day to help pay for the physiotherapy he will need after a life-changing operation. The event, in aid of three-year-old Harry McMylor from Stalybridge, will be held at Oxford Park Sports Hall, Pottinger Street in Ashton on Sunday, November 30, between 1.30pm and 5pm. Attractions at the free fun day include craft stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle and an appearance from Frozens Elsa. Harrys sister, Amy, four, and around 20 other children will also take part in a sponsored bounce on the inflatable castle on the day. The bounce-athon has gained 500 in sponsorship already, while Harrys nursery, Little Angels in Stalybridge, has also held a pyjama day to raise funds. Harry is one of just 120 children a year to be offered the operation called a selective dorsal rhizotomy on the NHS. But although the operation is being funded, the family need to raise 20k to pay for physiotherapy and specialist equipment needed to aid his recovery. The life-changing procedure should allow him to walk unaided, but his mum, Charlene and dad, David must raise 20,000 to fund two years of intensive physiotherapy after his … Continue reading

New high-tech cerebral palsy treatment centre opens in Canberra

Indigo receives regular treatment and speech therapy to help her develop after being diagnosed with cerebral palsy. A new purpose-built site to help ACT children diagnosed with cerebral palsy has been praised by families. The Cerebral Palsy Alliance Canberra has been operating out of rented premises in Spence since 2004 helping an estimated 400 families in the region. The opening of a $2 million therapy centre at Scullin brings together all the available support services in a state-of-the-art centre. Twenty-month-old Indigo has been receiving regular therapy to help with her development since being diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby. Her mother Juliette Brassington said the new centre was very welcome for families needing early intervention. "Being purpose-built I guess it's going to have the access to things like splints which we couldn't actually get without a delay at the old centre," she said. "So they have actually got the facilities to do that, and having a gym downstairs will be fantastic, and the purpose-built rooms will make a big difference." The centre was built solely through corporate and private philanthropy, and is staffed by six specialists providing a range of therapy services. Cerebral Palsy Alliance president Marelle Thornton said … Continue reading
