Vacant Chester Township care center a sign of the times

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2014

CHESTER TWP. - The 15-acre Glenlora property, a former nursing home on West Main Street remains empty and unused, eight years after the township bought the property for $3 million. The plan at the time of purchase of the 63 W. Main St. property was to lease it to United Cerebral Palsy, which planned to develop a rehabilitation and respite facility along with 10 apartments for low-income people with disabilities. The housing would have met the township's affordable housing requirement under the state's Council on Affordable Housing (COAH). But United Cerebral Palsy was unable to secure needed funding and the plans fell through. The township bought the facility with funds paid by developers to the town's affordable housing trust fund. "The idea was that individuals who were caregivers could arrange to have their ward stay at the center for a period of time so that the caregivers could do something, like take a vacation, while the person they cared for would be in a position to go somewhere seeking treatment and accommodation," said Mayor Bill Cogger. "It's not an easy condition to travel with. They would have done rehabilitative work there as well with patients. Unfortunately, after we purchased it, … Continue reading

Quarter of Bulgarian MPs to Donate Their First Salaries

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2014

As many as 62 out of Bulgaria's 240 lawmakers have promised to donate their October salaries for a cause at the end of a campaign to save a child's life. Betina Terzieva, a young girl, wrote earlier an open letter to MPs calling on them to give their first money as lawmakers to help Slavi Edrev, a child that has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and needs treatment. Terzieva started a campaign titled Make an MP Save a Child's Life on Facebook which ended Thursday, November 13. Some EUR 105 000 are needed for the boy's treatment. If all 62 lawmakers who promised to donate their salaries hold on to their promise, they might be able to collect the money as each MP received BGN 2590 in October. Parliament held virtually two sessions in October, but some lawmakers are adamant they cannot renounce the entire amount of money they earned within their period, claiming they need it to make ends meet. March of Dimes: Florida gets a 'D' on premature births

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2014

Published: Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 6:01 a.m. Last Modified: Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 5:52 p.m. The March of Dimes says that Florida, despite progress, continues to have an unacceptable premature birth rate, putting infants at risk of cerebral palsy, lung disease, heart problems and other significant, long-term health issues. With Prematurity Awareness Month now underway, Florida received a D on the nonprofit infant health research and education foundation's annual report card on premature birth rates. In the state, 13.6 percent of births were preterm, or before 37 full weeks, the March of Dimes said. By comparison, the national rate was 11.4 percent the lowest in 17 years giving the country an overall C grade on the report card. The March of Dimes has a set goal of reducing the country's premature birth rate to 9.6 percent. In Florida, African-Americans (17.7 percent), Native Americans (17 percent) and Hispanics (14.3 percent) all had premature birth rates above the statewide average, while white mothers (11.2 percent) and Asians (12.3 percent) were below the state average. In its annual report, the March of Dimes noted that it remains "concerned about inequities in health and health care that contribute to higher rates of … Continue reading

Family in mission to make brave Katie's dance dream come true

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2014

A youngster with cerebral palsy who dreams of dancing is facing another major operation to help her walk. Nine-year-old Katie Holmes was one of the first children in the north west to undergo NHS surgery for the condition, a pioneering procedure to loosen her muscles by cutting nerves in the lower spine. Although she saw improvements following the selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) operation last year, Katie has had surgery since and is facing more before she can stand on her own two feet. Mum-of-three Emma, 30, from Denton, Tameside, said the SDR procedure had worked but, whereas many youngsters make a full recovery, Katie needed extra help. She said: I think Katie is just one of the unlucky ones and needs more treatment. She can walk without a frame for a little bit but her legs turn in and sometimes she is tripping over her feet. She is a strong little girl and I think shes used to it, but she just wants to be able to dance. Emma and Katies dad Jonathan, 29, are now waiting to hear from the Leeds hospital where the youngster will have her operation called femoral derotation osteotomy. Her recovery will depend on intensive … Continue reading

In the 1970s obstetricians suggested that if the sequence was altered by making care more optimal (which they defined as emergency caesarean section for abnormalities on the electronic fetal monitor) then the cerebral palsy would be avoided (Quilligan and Paul 1975). The major effects of electronic monitoring on the fetal heart in labour are an increase in caesarean section rates and a reduced rate of neonatal seizures; it has had no effect on the rates of cerebral palsy (Stanley and Watson 1993, Nelson et al. 1996). This may be because few cases of cerebral palsy result from this pathway. Even those cases in which brain damage is caused by excessive intrapartum hypoxia, clinical signs sufficient to warrant emergency caesarean section may only be … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy: MedlinePlus – National Library of Medicine …

Posted: Published on October 27th, 2014

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and to maintain balance and posture. The disorders appear in the first few years of life. Usually they do not get worse over time. People with cerebral palsy may have difficulty walking. They may also have trouble with tasks such as writing or using scissors. Some have other medical conditions, including seizure disorders or mental impairment. Cerebral palsy happens when the areas of the brain that control movement and posture do not develop correctly or get damaged. Early signs of cerebral palsy usually appear before 3 years of age. Babies with cerebral palsy are often slow to roll over, sit, crawl, smile, or walk. Some babies are born with cerebral palsy; others get it after they are born. There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but treatment can improve the lives of those who have it. Treatment includes medicines, braces, and physical, occupational and speech therapy.
