Dog of special needs girl saved with help from detective

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

When Pierce County Detective Ryan Salmon stopped to investigate a crowd on a Tacoma street corner, the sight of a girl in a wheelchair with her special needs dog at her feet really got his attention. Faith Cloud is confined to a wheelchair and cannot speak because she was born with cerebral palsy. Her service dog, Spice, had just been hit by a silver car that fled, leaving Spice behind with multiple hip and leg fractures. Salmon says he, "just did the right thing. It wasn't about being a cop it was about having compassion for this girl and her dog." So he, Faith's mother, Tonya, and a friend scooped Spice up and jumped into his unmarked police car for a trip to the Veterinary Hospital. It was later that day when he called to check up on Spice that Salmon learned that Tonya could not afford the X-rays and treatment that Spice needed. So again, he "just did the right thing" for Faith, Spice, and Tonya and told the vet to send him the $200 bill for the treatment. Tonya Cloud says she just can't believe that a total stranger would do something so wonderful for her daughter and … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy Awareness

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2014

Tomorrow Is World Cerebral Palsy Day! Wednesday, October 1 is World Cerebral Palsy Day, a day centered on raising awareness for the condition worldwide. Cerebral Palsy is a life-altering neurological disorder that affects movement and posture. It can appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect you. The most common characteristics are a lack of muscle coordination, stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes. Cerebral Palsy affects 17 million people worldwide and an additional 350 million people are closely connected to a child or adult who has the condition. Cerebral Palsy can be caused by medical malpractice when a doctor does not provide appropriate treatment to a mother and her infant either before or during labor and delivery. Lack of oxygen during labor and delivery can not only cause physical injury, but brain damage. Led by a group of Cerebral Palsy Charities in over 45 countries, World CP day is a global innovation project to change the world for people living with the condition. Wear Green tomorrow, October 1, to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy. Change My World in 1 Minute One of the highlights of World CP day is the Invent It Competition. Scientists aim to give botox a safer facelift

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 1-Oct-2014 Contact: Mary Beth O'Leary moleary@cell.com 617-397-2802 Cell Press @CellPressNews New insights into botulinum neurotoxins and their interactions with cells are moving scientists ever closer to safer forms of Botox and a better understanding of the dangerous disease known as botulism. By comparing all known structures of botulinum neurotoxins, researchers writing in the Cell Press journal Trends in Biochemical Sciences on October 1st suggest new ways to improve the safety and efficacy of Botox injections. "If we know from high-resolution structures how botulinum neurotoxins interact with their receptors, we can design inhibitors or specific antibodies directed at the binding interface to prevent the interaction," said Richard Kammerer of the Paul Scherrer Insititute in Switzerland. "Furthermore, it may be possible to engineer safer toxins for medical and cosmetic applications." In addition to its popular cosmetic use, the neurotoxin is used for the treatment of muscle conditions related to cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson's disease, and more. The bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum, classically found as a contaminant in home-canned food, produces the neurotoxins, which pass the intestine and enter the bloodstream when ingested, Kammerer explained. When the neurotoxins reach neurons, they bind to receptors at the cell … Continue reading

Connor's 'best shot at life' to enjoy Kiwi childhood

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2014

SHAUN EADE DETERMINED PAIR: Teresa Graham is determined to find a way to help her son Connor, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was a only couple of weeks old. While most children dream of material items Tuakau's Connor Graham just wants to enjoy growing up as a Kiwi kid, something most take for granted. The 13-year-old has cerebral palsy, a disorder caused by brain damage that affects the ability to control movement. It's a challenge he and his parents have been dealing with since he was only a couple weeks old. His mother, Teresa Graham, said after years of positive steps, a lack of funding could see all the hard work come undone. "Over the last six months, I have noticed everything has changed and he has lost a lot of what he has learnt and that saddens me," she said. "We have worked really hard because we do not want him to be dependent on the state. I cannot seem to find someone important enough to make the funding happen." She said Connor's attitude motivated the family through the difficult times. "He has got a wonderful nature and is very patient," she said. "His ambition is … Continue reading

Computer models help cerebral palsy patients step out

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

University of Queensland researchers are using computer modelling to predict the most effective way to help cerebral palsy patients walk and move more easily. Dr Glen Lichtwark from the Centre for Sensorimotor Performance at UQs School of Human Movement Studies is simulating and predicting how surgery, strength training and other treatments could improve patients muscle function. The project will examine the effectiveness of medical interventions on muscle development and function, Dr Lichtwark said. Cerebral palsy affects parts of the brain that control movement, therefore affecting a persons posture and muscle coordination. Patients often need medical treatment and surgery to maintain mobility and manage muscle weakness, spasticity, joint stiffness and reduced muscle control. What we really want to know is how a specific treatment might impact an individual, so treatments can be tailored to that individual to maximise treatment success. About 34,000 people are living with cerebral palsy in Australia and this is expected to rise to more than 47,000 by 2050. Dr Lichtwark said previously it had been difficult to establish the impact surgery had on walking, or to determine which treatments would address specific impairments. Our researchers have begun developing models to examine the impact of muscle tightening and … Continue reading

West Marin medical-marijuana activist Jacqueline Patterson was born with cerebral palsy and started using cannabis while she was still in her teens to help a severe stuttering problem. Born in the Midwest, Patterson took a rocky path to Marin County and full-time cannabis activism. She was sexually assaulted in Kansas City about 15 years ago, got pregnant as a result of the rape and moved home to Iowa, where her mother lives. The plan was to stay with Mom, have the baby, put it up for adoption. Then in her early 20s, Patterson started going to college to study rape, its causes and how to prevent it. Her discovery: "You have to end the drug war to prevent rape," she says. "Cannabis makes for a less violent society." Vindication would come years later, as she watched unfolding legalization dramas in Washington and Coloradoand the acceptance of medical cannabis in nearly half the country. Now California is set to vote on legalization in 2016 through a proposed referendum. "Domestic violence rates are going down in states where cannabis is at least medically available," says Patterson, citing a growing body of available research, "and they are going down a lot where it … Continue reading
