New cerebral palsy treatment customizes care for patients …

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2014

New research is giving children withcerebral palsy a more customized treatment plan, meaning each patient receives optimal care for his or her specific condition. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy or childbirth, or shortly after birth. Brain damage restricts arm and leg motor functions, which affects limb movement and posture. Those restrictions differ among patients and that makes treatment difficult. Physicians must be able to fully understand patient movement restrictions to design treatment plans. To help doctors better determine a patients limitations, Scott Coleman and his colleagues at Baylor University Medical Centers Motion and Sports Lab joined investigators in Sweden to carefully study movement through three-dimensional gait analysis. Researchers compared two groups a patient group and a control group, each with a mean age of 17 to study how cerebral palsy patients move compared to their peers. As a result, Coleman and his colleague devised four new clinical categories that patients can be assigned for optimal treatment. This should give doctors that have access to a gait laboratory further insight into a treatment plan and outcome of surgical intervention for a particular child with cerebral palsy, … Continue reading

Causes of Cerebral Palsy – Ask the Doctor

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

What causes Cerebral Palsy? Why does your child have Cerebral Palsy? The simplest answer is because your child has brain damage. This leads naturally into the second question: Why does your child have brain damage? There are many possible answers to this second question, because there are many causes and reasons children can sustain brain damage. Your doctor must carefully review your childs health history and conduct a variety of medical and neurological tests to help determine the cause. Cerebral Palsy is caused by an injury to the brain before, during, or shortly after birth. In many cases, no one knows for sure what caused the brain injury or what may have been done to prevent the injury. A large number of factors which can injure the developing brain may cause Cerebral Palsy. In general, however, there are two problems that can cause Cerebral Palsy: Whatever the cause of your childs Cerebral Palsy, the severity of the brain damage generally depends on the type and timing of the injury. For example, in very premature babies, bleeding into the brain (intraventricular hemorrhage) can cause extensive damage. Also, the longer an unborn baby goes without oxygen, the greater the extent of brain … Continue reading

Implact of dexamethasone on intelligence and hearing in preterm infants

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-Sep-2014 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research Glucocorticoids are speculated to have a long-term impact on the development of the nervous system and increase the incidence of cerebral palsy in preterm infants. The existing studies concerning the role of dexamethasone in preterm infants are insufficiently reliable owing to short follow-up periods and small sample sizes in clinical studies, or the absence of randomized controlled trials. Ruolin Zhang and co-workers from the Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in China conducted a meta-analysis of 10 relevant randomized controlled trials. They found that dexamethasone may affect the intelligence of preterm infants in the early stages after birth, but may lead to hearing impairment at later stages after birth. These findings published in the Neural Regeneration Research attempt to provide evidence for clinical application of dexamethasone in the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome and chronic lung diseases in preterm infants. ### Article "Effect of dexamethasone on intelligence and hearing in preterm infants: a meta-analysis," by Ruolin Zhang, Tao Bo, Li Shen, Senlin Luo, Jian Li (Department of Pediatrics, Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan Province, China) Zhang RL, Bo T, Shen L, Luo SL, Li J. … Continue reading

Drive to help cerebral palsy suffererAisling realise her dream

Posted: Published on September 2nd, 2014

A major fundraising drive has been launched to help a girl with cerebral palsy continue a pioneering treatment which could help her realise her dream to walk. Aisling Tanner, 11, from near Enniskeane in West Cork, is believed to be the first child from Ireland to benefit from Advanced Bio-Mechanical Rehabilitation (ABR). The fifth-class student at Coppeen NS travels to a specialist centre in Scotland up to three times a year with her parents, Fergus and Therese, to meet Belgian experts. They have been training her parents in a range of specialist exercise techniques to condition and strengthen the parts of Aislings body affected by cerebral palsy. Fergus and Therese have to spend up to four hours every day performing the intense physical therapy on their daughter. Therese said while it is a huge commitment, it has been worth every second. We just want to give her the best possible chance at leading an independent life. We only have one chance at this before Aisling hits puberty and her body starts to change. As a mother, if I can get this therapy in place and continue it, the changes in her body will be permanent, and we will be glad … Continue reading
