Posted: Published on April 25th, 2014

The family of a six-year-old boy who was due to travel to Shropshire from the Falklands for a life-changing operation are fuming after being told the funding for his treatment has been withdrawn. Kailand Ford with his sister Kia in the Falklands. Kailand Ford was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which means he can only walk on his toes and cannot straighten his arms. He had been due to make the 15,000-mile round trip from his home in the Falklands for an operation at Oswestrys orthopaedic hospital on April 29, which would have allowed him to live a normal life. But last week his family were told the NHS had declined to fund the procedure, despite Kailand having undergone five trips to Oswestry for treatment over the past two years. His grandmother Margaret Armstrong said: Kailand will be doomed to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair if he does not get this operation. When he was diagnosed, during his first year, his parents were told that he would never walk. Nevertheless, through regular physiotherapy and sheer pluck he has learned to walk, if only on his toes and with the help of a walking frame. He now … Continue reading

Mild scoliosis usually requires little treatment

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2014

By Anthony L. Komaroff, M.D. Dr. Komaroff Dear Doctor K: My granddaughter has scoliosis. What is the best treatment option for this condition? Dear Reader: For readers who may not be familiar with the condition, I'll start by explaining what scoliosis is. Normally, when you look at a person's spine, it appears straight. With scoliosis, the spine typically curves out to one side and then back again. Or it may have two bowed-out areas, resembling an S shape. (I've put an illustration of a normal spine and a spine curved by scoliosis on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) What causes scoliosis? Certain neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause the muscles of the back to pull unevenly on the bones of the spine. Birth defects in the bones of the spine can cause it. Other genetic conditions that affect the ligaments and soft tissues of the spine also can cause it. In most cases, there is no such clear cause. How common is scoliosis? Including its mildest forms, about three out of every 100 children are affected. However, in only about three out of every 1,000 children is it severe enough to require treatment. Scoliosis is a long-term condition that can … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy: Get the Facts about this Group of Disorders

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2014

Cerebral palsy facts Cerebral palsy (CP) is an abnormality of motor function, the ability to move and control movements. Cerebral palsy is acquired at an early age, usually less than a year of age. Cerebral palsy is due to a brain abnormality that does not progress in severity. The causes of cerebral palsy include prematurity, genetic disorders, strokes, and infection of the brain. Taking certain precautions during the pregnancy might decrease the risk of cerebral palsy. Asphyxia, the lack of oxygen to the brain, at birth is not as common a cause of cerebral palsy as had been thought. There are different types of cerebral palsy based on symptoms -- spastic, hypotonic, choreoathetoid, and mixed types. The best approach for diagnosis, treatment, and management is through and interdisciplinary team. Cerebral palsy may be associated with many other medical conditions, including mental retardation or seizures. Many of these conditions can be treated with improved quality of life. Many children with cerebral palsy have a normal intellect and have no seizures. Treatment of cerebral palsy is for the symptoms only; there are few treatments for the underlying causes. There are many alternative medicines promoted for the treatment of cerebral palsy that have … Continue reading

Spastic cerebral palsy It is by far the most common type of overall cerebral palsy, occurring in 80% of all cases. People with this type of CP are hypertonic and have what is essentially a neuromuscular mobility impairment (rather than hypotonia or paralysis) stemming from an upper motor neuron lesion in the brain as well as the corticospinal tract or the motor cortex. This damage impairs the ability of some nerve receptors in the spine to properly receive gamma amino butyric acid, leading to hypertonia in the muscles signaled by those damaged nerves. Spastic cerebral palsy refers … Continue reading

Charge: Couple left North Bend girl with cerebral palsy to rot, starve while living on her welfare

Posted: Published on April 16th, 2014

They had two flat screen TVs, an extensive reptile collection and a steady stream of welfare checks meant to help a blind teen with cerebral palsy. She had 23 rotten teeth, a dirty diaper and a bedroom the King County Sheriffs Office detective on the case described as the worst shed seen during her career. Now, the young womans state-paid caretakers April and Jeffrey Henderson face felony charges related to the 19-year-olds treatment and a purported Medicaid fraud that saw thousands of dollars paid for care that the girl was cruelly denied. The North Bend couple is alleged to have lived on the $4,100 or so per month in government benefits meant to provide for the young woman, who was orphaned at age 7 and left in the Hendersons care. When investigators arrived at the wooded, rural home, they found the teen naked except for a diaper, left in a room littered with soiled clothing, dried vomit and trash. Weighing just 67 pounds, the girl was described as skeletal by the case detective. Writing the court, Detective Belinda Paredes-Garrett said the young woman was flailing and crying when help arrived. The only way to describe her moaning was that of … Continue reading

We look forward to sharing with the scientific community some additional data at coming international congresses. Four weeks after Dysport injection, the Phase III clinical study results demonstrated that: Additionally, patients treated with Dysport showed a higher proportion of responders from baseline in improved passive function versus placebo (exhibiting 1 grade decrease as measured by the disability assessment scale). At week 4, patients treated with Dysport 1000 units showed a statistically significant response rate of 62%. Patients treated with Dysport 500 units showed a clinically relevant response rate of 50%. Placebo arm showed a 39% response rate. The safety profile observed in the study was consistent with the known safety profile of Dysport. Further results from this double-blind study will be disclosed in the next few months at major international congresses. For more detailed information about the 8th World Congress for NeuroRehabilitation, please see http://www.wcnr2014.org Dysport is approved for the treatment of upper limb … Continue reading

Help Ambers dream of walking come true

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2014

Amber Porterfield has a dream that one day she will be able to walk. And now an entire community is getting behind a mammoth 60,000 fundraising effort to make sure the five-year-olds dream will become a reality. The five-year-old has spastic diplegic cerebral palsy and uses a walking frame and a wheelchair to get about. Her family have launched the appeal with the help of Pelsall Village School where she is a Year One pupil, to come up with the cash to cover the costs of a life-changing operation in the United States. If it proves successful the treatment will help her to walk unaided. The proceeds will also help the family to go with her to the Cerebral Palsy Centre at the St Louis Childrens Hospital, Missouri, for the selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) operation. She has limited mobility in her lower limbs because the signals from her brain to the spine do not work. This major procedure on her spine would test the nerves with electrodes to find which is causing the stiffness in her lower limbs. This nerve would then be cut. Her mother Susannah Kemp, aged 33, explains: Amber was assessed last year to see whether she … Continue reading
