Get Breaking News First Receive News, Politics, and Entertainment Headlines Each Morning. BOSTON (CBS) Surveillance cameras are being credited for helping catch a Brockton man accused of attacking a man who suffers from cerebral palsy on an MBTA train. Thomas Kennedy, 62, was arraigned in South Boston Municipal Court on Thursday. Hes charged with assault and battery on a disabled person, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and a civil rights violation. According to prosecutors, the victim, a 21-year-old college student, had boarded a Red Line train on Tuesday afternoon at Downtown Crossing and sat down next to Kennedy. Kennedy reportedly reeked of alcohol and allegedly made derogatory comments about the victims disability. Kennedy is also alleged to have used ethnic and homophobic slurs. The victim eventually moved seats, but police say Kennedy continued yelling at him and eventually punched and kicked him. Police say the victim managed to get off the train at JFK/UMass, and was taken to Boston Medical Center with injuries. The victim was able to give police a description of his attacker, and was later able to point out Kennedy on MBTA surveillance footage. Royal Engineer's bungee jump to boost Enzo stem cell appeal 12:50pm Sunday 6th April 2014 in News A SOLDIER has undertaken a bungee jump off Middlesbroughs Transporter Bridge to raise funds for stem cell treatment for a toddler who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after being starved of oxygen during labour. Ripon-based Royal Engineer Stephen Maher said he wanted to boost the 60,000 appeal to enable 18-month-old Enzo Thompson to develop basic physical skills. The 27-year-old said he hoped the 160ft leap would also raise awareness of the fundraising campaign for the toddler from Hampshire. Enzos mother, Caroline, said the damage caused to Enzo's brain meant he is unable to process the signals that his brain is sending to his body. She said: Stem cell treatment is a way of repairing and replacing these damaged cells. In the long run we hope that the treatment will offer our son a better quality of life and the chance to be free and independent. Brave schoolgirl's 65,000 dream to walk unaided for the first time through life-changing operation
Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014
Eight-year-old Scarlett Hewitt has battled health problems since birth but hopes to fly to America for pioneering treatment. A little girl's dream of playing with her friends in the school playground could become reality after being selected for life-changing surgery. Scarlett Hewitt, eight, was born with cerebral palsy triggered by a heart defect and is unable to walk unaided. But an operation to help reduce the spasticity in her legs is not available on the NHS and Scarlett needs 65,000 to undergo the procedure in the US. Her family have now launched a fundraising campaign to raise money for the complex selective dorsal rhizotomy operation and physiotherapy at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri. Scarlett, from Croydon, south London, said meeting the target would bring her one step closer to her dream of being able to run around with her friends and younger sisters Sienna, seven, and Saffron, three. She said: "I dream that one day I will not have to use my walking frame or wheelchair anymore and that I will be able to play in the playground with my school friends and run around just like them. "Sometimes it makes me so sad to sit watching them. It … Continue reading

Pediapharm Inc. ("Pediapharm") (TSX VENTURE:PDP) and Merz Pharma Canada, Ltd. ("Merz") announce they have entered into an agreement regarding the Canadian rights to CUVPOSA (glycopyrrolate) oral solution intended for pediatric chronic severe drooling (sialorrhea) associated with neurologic conditions such as cerebral palsy. Pediapharm was granted exclusive commercial rights for the product in Canada. "Merz is pleased to be expanding patient and physician access to Cuvposa (glycopyrrolate) oral solution through this new agreement with Pediapharm," said Bob Bennett, President and General Manager of Merz Pharma Canada. "We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients suffering from movement and neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, and we look forward to collaborating with Pediapharm in order to achieve this goal." Cerebral palsy (CP) is a lifelong condition that encompasses a group of non-progressive, neurological disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordination. "Based on our discussions with experts in the field, chronic severe drooling is a poorly managed condition in up to 30% of children with CP. Because the treatment options available in Canada are limited, this may lead to various health issues and a decreased quality of life in that patient population", said Benot Hbert, Pediapharm's Vice President of Business … Continue reading

Topics: blaise wyatt, cerebral palsy, let's get blaise to michigan TALKING and chewing are abilities taken for granted by most, but for Blaise Wyatt it is a milestone now achievable thanks to the generosity of the community. Two weeks ago the Wyatt family faced sacrificing vital speech therapy for their son, who has a cruel form of cerebral palsy, when their budget fell $5000 short of the $40,000 needed to undergo treatment in the United States. A crazy hair day fundraiser at Ipswich Kindergarten to celebrate Blaise's fifth birthday on Tuesday raised more than $600 for the Let's Get Blaise to Michigan campaign. The contribution by families and organisations, which is on target to reaching $5000, has left mum Dawn Wyatt overwhelmed. The Silkstone family will travel to Michigan Paediatric Fitness Centre in Keego Harbour, a small town north of Detroit, on Wednesday where their Blaise will undergo 180 hours of therapy not available in Australia. "I feel relief," Mrs Wyatt said. "If we didn't raise the last $5000 we wouldn't be able to give Blaise the speech therapy, which would help him to speak, chew and eat." The focus of the treatment is 90 hours of cutting-edge TheraSuit therapy, … Continue reading

But earlier this month we revealed that readers had raised enough cash for his first big operation. Now a mystery benefactor has now come forward with 7,440 to fund a crucial second round of dorsal rhizotomy surgery. Both will take place at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, where Ben was booked for NHS treatment on February 20 only to see it pulled at the last minute. Mum Amy, 29, paid tribute to all those who paid to help him walk. She said: I cannot believe we have done this in just four weeks. Ben is so excited. He keeps saying, It is well good, Mum. Right now he feels trapped because his muscles cant do what he wants them to. I cant wait to ask him How does that feel Ben? when he can move them properly. Read more … Continue reading
