The 5-year-old was born in Uganda, Africa, with cerebral palsy, and it took a small village of sorts to bring him and his mother, Joy Mutungi, to the United States on a medical visa to be evaluated and begin to receive treatment. The Rye Congregational Church set up a fund in Samuel Mutungi's name to assist his family with medical expenses. Donations can be sent to the Rye Congregational Church, Attn: Ugandan Missions Samuel, 580 Washington Rd, Rye, NH 03870. Plea for donations from Radcliffe campaigner desperate to walk again

Plea for donations from Radcliffe campaigner desperate to walk again 11:54am Thursday 13th February 2014 in News By Tui Benjamin, Reporter A BATTLE for the right to walk could become reality for a Radcliffe woman after she campaigned for life-changing surgery usually only offered to children. Cerebral palsy sufferer Laura Ramsden, aged 33, of Bowker Street, could soon become one of the oldest people in the UK to have a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). The operation reduces tight muscle tone, known as spasticity, by cutting nerves and Laura is now hoping a public appeal will help her pay for expensive after-care treatment. She said: After this operation I am likely to be pain-free for the first time ever and at the age of 33 should be able to take my first steps all by myself. I dont really know how to put into words what this would mean it is something that able-bodied people take for granted every day. My youngest sister is getting married in the summer and I would love to be able to stand with her and the rest of the wedding party for the photographs. Having discovered the powerful effects of 70-an-hour neuro physiotherapy following a … Continue reading

Little Grace Lukan needs your help
Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014
Topics: cerebral palsy, grace lukan THIS is the situation faced by the Lukan family of Gin Gin - selling off their possessions to pay for their daughter's life-changing therapy to manage cerebral palsy or risk destroying the three-year-old's chances of ever being able to walk by herself. Grace Lukan was born with level four cerebral palsy, which means she may, in the future, be able to get around with the aid of a walker. But the cost of the intensive physical therapy she needs at least four times a year to engage her muscles and get them used to the movement sets the Lukan family back more than $60,000 a year. "Our whole life is just to get money for our daughter just so she isn't bedridden for her whole life," her father, Dan, said. While the Gin Gin community has rallied behind the family, hosting several fundraisers, it isn't enough to cover the costs of her treatment. If the family wasn't scrimping and saving enough, a huge chunk of Grace's therapy fund was taken out last year when they had to buy a $15,000 car to transport all the toddler's equipment. Then, after returning from her twice-yearly trip to … Continue reading

Support for Parents of Children with Cerebral Palsy Treatment surgery center children symptom India US UAE Europe Pakistan Nepal Bangladesh Sri Lanka Support for Parents of Children with Cerebral Palsy An active role of parents in all phases of program for child with cerebral palsy is preferable and important. Parents must be included as integral participates. First, the program must focus on the childs and familys needs and priorities. They should be encouraged to tell which activities they would like to improve firstly and which activities are more stressful or time- consuming. Second, parents must be included in goal setting which may prevent unrealistic expectations and frustrations of both parents and therapists. Third, the program must be adapted to familys capabilities, situation, and daily schedule. The therapist must always do counseling of childs attendant they can be mother, father, caretaker and family members because child always copies skills of his parents and also influenced by his or her atmosphere .Copying skill of parents, child interacts and involves functional outcomes, such as independence in self care, mobility and communication of child, should be quantified and measured. Letter: Pass Utah's HB105
Posted: Published on February 11th, 2014
I'm writing as a father of a daughter with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. I encourage support of Utah's HB105 in order to legalize the use of cannaboid oil as a therapeutic treatment for seizures. I thank Gage Froerer for introducing the bill. My daughter suffered an in-utero stroke and was born with cerebral palsy. Her first seizures started at 8 months of age and have only ever been partially controlled with prescription medications and ketogenic diet. In 2011 our daughter qualified for a surgery which severed the nerves connecting the stroke-damaged side of her brain. Since then she has been seizure free, but it still makes me emotional to describe, because I know what it's like to fight for someone you care so deeply about. This house bill is significant because it allows a therapeutic solution that offers tangible relief from seizures which are otherwise not controlled by medicine. There is stigma around the treatment because it is derived from a form of cannabis; but the amount of THC in the hybrid used is low enough to meet the federal definition of industrial hemp. The medicine is oral and non-psychoactive. Significant neuro-protective properties are found in CBD, and it causes … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy awareness is very much needed in countries …

Cerebral palsy awareness is very much needed in countries India US UAE Europe Pakistan Nepal Bangladesh Sri Lanka I am father of Abhishek from Pratapgarh Uttar Pradesh. My child is suffering from cerebral palsy. Firstly we were never heard about this problem. We had shown him to so many doctors at several places. Some of our relatives and doctors said that he has polio and has no treatment. We took him to Polio research centre at Vishakhapattanam. First of time, I was told that he is suffering from cerebral palsy not polio. So due to lack of our knowledge, we were late for his proper treatment. They perform first surgery and after removal of the plaster cast physiotherapy was done for 15 days only. Then we returned back to home. After that surgery he had improved but with growing age again his problem started. His both of knees started to bend. He was losing his balance and started taking maximum support. He was 19 years old and we were very much worried because at this age he was not independent and his studies were getting interrupted. Then one day I took my son to a physiotherapist in Pratapgarh. He referred … Continue reading

Vulnerable forced to travel for treatment in dental shake-up

But the British Dental Association fears the move will hit care for patients with special needs, such as handicapped children, dementia sufferers or recovering drug addicts whose teeth can be rotted by the high sugar content of methadone. These patients often require sedation. Salaried dentists, who are paid directly by the NHS rather than being partners in their own dental practice, were parachuted into various areas around 2005 to deal with a crisis in local access which was forcing patients to go private or travel long distances for NHS dental care. Loading article content Although they can carry out routine procedures, they also specialise in providing dental treatments to patients with complex clinical needs who cannot be seen by normal high street dentists. BDA Scotland's Salaried Dentists' Committee has raised concerns about the future of care for such patients amid plans to axe or tender out a number salaried clinics. It is understood that the Eyemouth Dental Surgery … Continue reading

Story of Hercules: Boy with cerebral Palsy inspires book

CTV Toronto Published Tuesday, February 4, 2014 7:43PM EST Last Updated Tuesday, February 4, 2014 8:35PM EST A Toronto school is celebrating a remarkable student whose battle with cerebral palsy has not only taught his classmates a valuable lesson about acceptance, but has also inspired a book about his young life. Hercules Stergiou is like any other Grade 1 student at Bowmore Road Junior and Senior School -- full of energy, always smiling and playing around with his friends. The one thing that sets Hercules apart is the fact he has cerebral palsy -- a congenital disorder that affects muscle control and movement. For Kristina Stergiou, Hercules mom, sending her son off to school for the first time was an emotional and challenging experience. It was very scary. I think the biggest fear for us was kids picking on him and him not being accepted, she told CTV Toronto. Despite her fears, Hercules was embraced by students and staff at the school and thrived in his kindergarten class. Hercules story was so inspirational that his principal, Thelma Sambrook, decided to write a story about the boys first year in school -- a story that has now been published into a … Continue reading

Researchers identify new approach to personalize prevention of preterm birth
Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 3-Feb-2014 Contact: Vicki Bendure vicki@bendurepr.com 202-374-9259 Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine New research findings may soon help doctors personalize preterm birth prevention treatments by identifying which women at higher risk for preterm birth will be helped by progesterone injections. Injections of one type of progesterone, a synthetic form of a hormone naturally produced during pregnancy, have been shown to reduce the risk of recurrent preterm births by about a third. Nearly half a million babies are born too soon each year in the United States. Preterm birth (birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy) is the leading cause of newborn death, and babies who survive an early birth often face an increased risk of a lifetime of health challenges, such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and others. Even babies born just a few weeks early have higher rates of hospitalization and illness than full-term infants. It is a serious health problem that costs the United States more than $26 billion annually. Tracy Manuck, MD, assistant professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine and co-director of the University of Utah Prematurity Prevention Clinic at University of Utah Health Care, has been working to understand why progesterone treatments prevent preterm birth … Continue reading

Chester man turns illness into a positive for school

CHESTER The great optimist and author Dale Carnegie once said that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Borough resident Brian Dreisbach put the Carnegie mantra into practice when he used his empty dialysis boxes to craft sets, costumes and props for the Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey Horizon High School drama productions. Since 2010, Dreisbach, 47, has worked at the Livingston school which serves about 95 children with a range of disabilities. As a rehabilitation technician, Dreisbach adapts everyday items so they can be more easily used by the students. This is where the lemons come in. Dreisbach has chronic kidney disease and has been on home peritoneal dialysis since 2011. Dialysis is a process that cleans waste products from the blood and removes extra fluids when a kidney fails. Dialysis patients typically require treatment on an ongoing basis unless they receive a kidney transplant. The dialysis that Dreisbach has allows him to visit his dialysis facility, Fresenius Medical Care East Morris in Morristown, monthly rather than three times each week, which helps him maintain a busy schedule and work full-time. The treatment has contributed to his work at the school in another, unexpected way. School Play Each year, … Continue reading
