A SIX-year-old boy with cerebral palsy lived his dream of being a Red Arrows pilot and a fireman on Saturday. Elliot Gower, of Southbourne, was diagnosed with CP spastic diplegia at just two years old, which has left him unable to walk unaided. But the youngster, who also suffers with severe haemophilia, a condition which results in spontaneous and long-lasting bleeding, hasnt let that stop him. And on Saturday, Elliot was treated to a private visit to see historic planes at DS Aviation in Christchurch. During his visit, the schoolboy took a closer look at planes flown by the Yellowjacks the RAF display team who came before the Red Arrows as well as having the opportunity to sit in the drivers seat of one of Bournemouth Airports fire tenders. Dad James said Elliot hopes to become a pilot or a firefighter when he grows up. Elliot had an absolutely fantastic day, he said. Go here to see … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture that is caused by an insult to the immature, developing brain, most often before birth. Signs and symptoms appear during infancy or preschool years. In general, cerebral palsy causes impaired movement associated with exaggerated reflexes, floppiness or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteadiness of walking, or some combination of these. People with cerebral palsy may have difficulty with swallowing and commonly have eye muscle imbalance. People with cerebral palsy may have reduced range of motion at various joints of their bodies due to muscle stiffness. The effect of cerebral palsy on functional abilities varies greatly. Some people are able to walk while others aren't able to walk. Some people show normal to near normal intellectual function, but others may have intellectual disabilities. Epilepsy, blindness or deafness also may be present. People with cerebral palsy often have underlying developmental brain abnormalities. . Hampshire business donates car to raise funds for little girl's treatment 11:00am Thursday 16th January 2014 in News By Lauren Howard, Reporter WE cannot say thank you enough. Thats the message from a Winchester family after they came a step closer to realising their fundraising goal thanks to a generous donation. Jo and Andrew Syvret have been campaigning to raise 90,000 for their six-year-old daughter, Jemima, who was born with cerebral palsy, so she can get treatment to help her walk on her own. Now, after months of triathlons, rowing, and bracelet-making, the family has received a car to help them along with their worthy cause. The Hendy Group has donated a red Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec to be auctioned which they hope will raise over 13,000 for Jemimas cause. Paul Hendy, managing director, said: I heard about Jemima through my good friend David Cheyne who is on the organising committee for the ball. Were hoping to raise 13,495 with the auction. It should be a fun evening all in aid of a fantastic cause that has touched our hearts. We hope for the very best outcome for Jemima so that her quality of life can be the best it … Continue reading

‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Slammed for Being Offensive to People With Disabilities
Posted: Published on January 14th, 2014
Leonardo DiCaprio, Jon Bernthal, Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie in "The Wolf of Wall Street." "The Wolf of Wall Street" star Leonardo DiCaprio may have been singing Martin Scorsese's praises when accepting the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical Sunday. But others are condemning the film a debaucherous tale about real-life boiler room stockbroker Jordan Belfort with groups that advocate on behalf of people with disabilities slamming its treatment of such subject matter Monday. "'The Wolf of Wall Street' is getting a lot of attention for how it offends audiences on many levels, but one aspect that hasn't been discussed is its use of the R-word and its unacceptable mockery of people with cerebral palsy. Hollywood just doesn't seem to get it," said Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc, a group that serves people with disabilities, in a joint statement with the president and CEO of United Cerebral Palsy, Stephen Bennett. [PHOTOS: 2014 Golden Globes] "Among moviegoers who have paid to see 'The Wolf of Wall Street' in recent weeks are people with disabilities, their parents, siblings, and friends. It's time for Hollywood to wake up and see that their customers deserve better," Berns also said. … Continue reading

MD Moms names UCPlay Project Charity of the Year
Posted: Published on January 4th, 2014
Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) January 03, 2014 MD Moms is a Los Angeles based company that was founded by two dedicated and enthusiastic pediatricians, Diane Truong, M.D., FAAP and JJ Levenstein, M.D. FAAP. As pediatricians, they have spent over a quarter of a century caring for children and advising thousands of new parents. After hearing feedback from parents, MD Moms was inspired to create their Baby Silk line in order to provide high quality, hypoallergenic, effective skin and bath products for infants and children; they like-wise saw a need to pay it forward by creating a childrens charity of the year and committing to increase awareness of childrens causes and creating a stream of income to help support the charity. The MD Moms are dedicated to helping children at large through a variety of efforts, and this partnership exemplifies the goals of both our company, and those of United Cerebral Palsy Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties (UCPLA) - to help build and sustain ability in children with abilities of all types." states MD Moms co-founder, JJ Levenstein. "Both Dr. Diane and I are proud to name UCPlay Project as our Children's Charity of the Year for 2014-2016. As … Continue reading

Pushing her way through the obstacles

Orangeville Banner Despite having heard doctors rule it out, Ashlyn Coogan isnt going to let cerebral palsy or epilepsy stop her from learning how to walk. While her mother, Tammy, says the five-year-old Orangeville girl has been blessed with a great sense of humour, Ashlyn can also be a tad bit manipulative. She knows how to work people, Tammy laughed. Shell get them to do things for her. Ashlyn must have been speaking to someone with the Orangeville chapter of the Knights of Columbus. The service club has adopted Ashlyn and the Coogan family for its fifth annual Charity Motorcycle Ride next month. The Knights of Columbus had previously raised money for the families of Kaitlin Bolton and Jennifer Flynn. Tammy has seen the positive effect that has had on those families. We feel blessed that theyd accept us, she said. Its nice that there is a community service out there that is willing to help out local families. Just hearing about the hurdles the Coogan family has been forced to overcome made it an easy decision, explained Terry Barrett, grand knight for the Orangeville chapter of the Knights of Columbus. While Ashlyn has both quadriplegia spastic cerebral palsy and … Continue reading

Waldwick boy with cerebral palsy gets VIP access to WWE holiday event at Prudential after long ordering process
Posted: Published on December 25th, 2013
WALDWICK An 8-year-old boy with cerebral palsy could have been shut out of Saturdays World Wrestling Entertainment holiday event at the Prudential Center in Newark if not for the perseverance of his parents. KEVIN R. WEXLER / STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Brennan Macleod looks at the family Christmas tree beside his mother, Karen Macleod, on Monday. Chant and Karen Macleod and their son Brennan, who is wheelchair bound and non-verbal, are fans of professional wrestling. When Chant Macleod a member of the WWE Fan Council that provides feedback received notification in October that he could purchase tickets for the event, he jumped at the on-line pre-sale offer. Thats where the frustration started. The elder Macleod even though he had the pre-sale offer could not get access to tickets at the time the offer became available even though the event was wheelchair accessible at the Center. Macleod said he and his wife first noticed how Brennan reacted to wrestling when he was 2 years old. Brennan, in the hospital and acting restless and uncomfortable wearing electrodes during testing, zeroed in and became focused when wrestling appeared on a TV while his father was channel surfing. So when the opportunity came and we found … Continue reading
