Posted: Published on December 20th, 2013
SAN JOSE -- She's trekked to three continents in pursuit of care for her 10-year-old son Aaron. But still, Senait Abraha is not done searching. Now, the single mom working two jobs has set her sights on Los Angeles, where her 35-pound boy who can't walk or talk and suffers from cerebral palsy could receive intensive therapy she only dreams of affording. Then again, there's always a way. That much, Abraha's friends and family have learned. They've watched her fight her way out of a sorely lacking maternity ward in Asmara, Eritrea, to the Chinese city of Dalian, and now San Jose. She has fought, at times, with just a few dollars to her name. All in search of treatment for Aaron, whose condition is complicated by some blindness and daily seizures. Donations from Wish Book readers can help Abraha with her search. Senait Abraha greets her son Aaron Khan after his swim therapy session with Julia Gonzalez, a kinesiology student from San Jose State University at the Timpany Center in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013. (Karl Mondon, Bay Area News Group) Caring for Aaron involves strapping and unstrapping his clenched hands and feet from gloves and … Continue reading

Caring for Aaron involves strapping and unstrapping his clenched hands and feet from gloves and boots secured with Velcro; hoisting him in and out of his specially equipped, padded wheelchair; and inserting a feeding tube into his belly. Then there are the mother-son "wrestling matches," nightly story times, and a recent adventure in hair-cutting, when the pair … Continue reading

Horse program gives kids a leg up
Posted: Published on December 15th, 2013
ASSUMPTION Therapeutic riding is designed to give the rider a boost. Joni Beyers of Rosemond, for example, says her 4-year-old son Ben overcomes his social anxiety more often since participating this fall in the annual Saddle Up program offered by United Cerebral Palsy Land of Lincoln. Almost every day he talks to someone, she said. Conducted for the first time at Kemmerer Village after a riding center in Pawnee closed, the program also raised the self-esteem of eight youths near completion of their treatment at the facility for emotional and behavioral problems by having them help Ben and eight other riders. One 17-year-old said he felt honored when Ben finally allowed him to put him on his horse and walk around the indoor arena with him and his mount. I liked Bed a lot, the teenager said. It felt pretty good to help out. Amber Miller, an equine therapist with Kemmerers Equine-Assisted Therapy Program, said the new partnership came about after a chance meeting between her and UCP representatives at Taylorville Memorial Hospital Sept. 5 at the 2013 campaign kickoff of the United Way of Christian County. Saddle Up took place Tuesday evenings, Oct. 8 through 29, and wrapped up … Continue reading

Watch the amazing change when this woman with cerebral palsy smokes pot
Posted: Published on December 12th, 2013
Jacqueline Patterson was born with cerebral palsy, a congenital disorder that affects her motor functions. As a result of her condition, she suffers from a severe stutter and major pain and weakness on her right side. This video showcases the amazing effect of cannabis on her condition. As a mother she doesn't want her disability to affect her relationship with her children, so she's sought out alternative treatment for her disorder. She's found that cannabis is the most effective treatment for her stutter. However if she's caught buying or smoking marijuana she could lose custody of her children. So, she drives the streets of Kansas City looking for pot. Jacqueline says it's worth the risk because the pain she endures makes her feel as though she's "half the mother" she wants (and needs) to be for her children. After Jacqueline was reported for cannabis possession in Iowa, she moved to California and won a court case arguing that her consumption of marijuana was strictly for medicinal purposes. Hit up Jacqueline on Twitter @medicalmaryjane. For the full documentary, watch In Pot We Trust, which covers "a range of medical, social and political views and the medical purposes of marijuana in relation … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy. What is cerebral palsy and cerebral palsy …
Posted: Published on December 5th, 2013
What is cerebral palsy? Cerebral is another word for the brain. Palsy means a complete or partial loss of the ability to move a body part. So cerebral palsy means loss of ability to move a body part because of a problem with the brain. Cerebral palsy is not a single condition. It is an umbrella term used to describe a group of conditions that cause movement problems. Although the main problem is with the muscles in one or more parts of the body, the condition is caused by damage or faulty development in a part of the brain. The part of the brain affected is that which sends messages to muscles. It controls movement and co-ordination. The damage or faulty development usually occurs as a baby is developing in the womb. Sometimes it occurs during, or shortly after, birth. If someone has cerebral palsy, it means that they are not able to control some of the muscles in their body in the normal way. Depending on the type of cerebral palsy and the area of brain affected, a child may not be able to walk, move, talk, eat, or play in the same ways as other children. The following … Continue reading
