Brave stars take pain, trauma in their stride
Posted: Published on October 12th, 2013
"It's sort of like having a rock in your shoe. At first it's a pain but eventually you get used to it." Jack Day's beautifully simple way of explaining how he lives with cerebral palsy belies the pain and trauma he has endured in his short life. Born with the condition that causes stiffness in his legs and left arm, the 11-year-old has had nine operations, including a risky seven-hour surgery to cut selected spinal nerves when he was four. Jack and fellow Telethon 2013 star Tahlia Polmear have battled more illness and suffering in their 11 years than most adults do in their lifetime. Tahlia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia a year ago today. It has turned the Esperance schoolgirl's life upside down. Tahlia and her mother Anya moved to Perth for 10 months so she could begin a gruelling chemotherapy treatment regime - intravenous drugs, lumbar punctures and bone marrow checks - at Princess Margaret Hospital. Now in the treatment phase to stop the cancer returning, Tahlia is remarkably unaffected by the past year. "It hasn't stopped me from doing what I want to do. It's only stopped me from doing stuff I didn't do before, like … Continue reading

Brecon, six, boarded a flight bound for St Louis where he will undergo pioneering treatment in a bid to enable him to walk. The schoolboy, who has cerebral palsy, was booked in for the expensive surgery thanks to an astonishingly selfless act from a complete stranger, Daniel Black. Daniel, 26, was left paralysed after breaking his back in a cycle accident in 2009. He began raising cash that he hoped to use to help himself walk again. But when he heard about Brecons plight, Daniel gave every penny he had collected a whopping 22,000 to the lad. Before the flight left Heathrow airport yesterday, Brecons dad Rob, 44, said: It is remarkable to think we are actually going. It will be everything we have hoped for. Oct. 7, 2013, 5:49 p.m. Dexter Heffernan is seen here with Clive Payne, of Kiama Lions Club, which helped meet the cost of the standing frame. Picture: DYLAN ROBINSON BRAVE Kiama youngster Dexter Heffernan is back home after he was hospitalised with aspiration pneumonia. Last week's hospital stay was the result of saliva that Dexter swallowed into his lungs, a common complication for people with cerebral palsy, but Dexter's first experience of the problem. After six days of antibiotic treatment, Dexter showed his trademark determination. While this incident was relatively minor one, Mrs Heffernan recalled "too many images" of other close calls for Dexter, and his family have learned not to underestimate his spirit. "He is a fighter, an absolute fighter, and he is so stubborn and so determined . . . you know what, he is so cheeky, he really is," Mrs Heffernan said. "He is smart too. He learns things so quickly." Dexter was born at 31 weeks and spent 122 days in neo-natal intensive care units. As well as cerebral palsy, he is visually impaired and last year was diagnosed with liver cancer. Little Jack takes first steps towards new life after US operation
Posted: Published on October 9th, 2013
8 Oct 2013 07:00 Month-long treatment helps four-year-old with cerebral palsy walk for the first time A young boy with cerebral palsy who was unable to walk has made his first steps thanks to an operation in America. Four-year-old Jack Ostler from Woking spent just under a month with his family in St Louis, Missouri, after more than 30,000 was raised for the operation. Now he is back home and has started school, making new friends along the way. Jack, who lives with his parents Sarah and Simon and little brother Max in Woking, was born eight weeks early and suffered oxygen starvation at birth, resulting in cerebral palsy. He found it tough to use his arms, hands and legs and could not walk properly or sit up without help. The operation he underwent at St Louis Childrens Hospital is known as a selective dorsal rhizotomy. It included removing nerve connections from his muscles to his spinal cord, causing the stiffness in his legs. After the successful operation, Jack underwent an hours physiotherapy every day for three weeks, with his family supporting him along the way. Rachael's police fight to help others
Posted: Published on October 7th, 2013
Rachael O'Neill with her seven-year-old daughter Caitlin. Source: News Limited THE same determination that made assault victim Rachael O'Neill return 10 times to a police station until someone listened to her has inspired her to help protect the interests of all disabled people who are confronted by stressful situations involving police. Police, prisons and courts were last week criticised by legal aid lawyers for their treatment of disabled people . But Ms O'Neill, who has cerebral palsy, believes cultures and attitudes can change quickly through a modern training package delivered by disabled people themselves. Ms O'Neill, of Hillbank, is nearing completion of a TAFE training course that will qualify her to start training police in how to deal with people suffering from a disability, to add to their existing program. She has helped develop the training course with SAPOL liaison officers during monthly meetings in the past 18 months. "I finish the course in December and it has been a real struggle because I work full-time as a carer with Disability SA as well and I have a child,'' she said. TELL US: Is there a lack of awareness about people with disabilities? Share your experience Ms O'Neill said her … Continue reading

Patients face 150-mile trip to get Parkinson’s treatment
Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2013
A search has been launched to find somewhere in Shropshire for Parkinsons patients to receive pioneering treatment, after it emerged patients were having to travel as far as Hereford. Patients want to find a venue preferably in Shrewsbury where they can receive treatment after sessions at Megan Baker House in Leominster ceased. About 40 people who travelled across the Shropshire border to make use of the service now face a 10-mile longer journey to Hereford leaving people travelling from north Shropshire with a potential round trip of 150 miles. The Parkinsons sufferers also need to find custom-made treatment furniture for the conductive education treatment, developed by physician Professor Andras Pto in Hungary, which embraces learning and development of movement, speech and mental ability. The treatment is also used to help those living with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, strokes or head injuries. Brenda Hodnett, from Shrewsbury, has suffered from Parkinsons for three years and has been having the treatment for several months. She said: We have been to see a variety of venues to try and find a space where we can have the treatment. But the rooms have either been too small, with the wrong flooring, or there hasnt been … Continue reading
