Heartland man with cerebral palsy inspires others in his quest to walk – WOWT
Posted: Published on April 19th, 2017
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- Every rep and every deep breath are signs of how far Anthony Nguyen has come. "I was really unhealthy," Nguyen said. "I was 86 pounds, and I wanted to do something different." That difference in his life is spending several days a week at the gym, hours at a time, to build up his strength. "We all have barriers," Nguyen said. "We all can break them down if we have belief in ourself and have a wonderful support system." Nguyen's barrier is a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, affecting the lower half of his body. Right now, he uses a wheelchair to get around the gym. He said through his determination, his leg strength has made leaps and bounds since he got started. "It's easier to get into the machines and out of the machines, which was really a difficult barrier for me at the very beginning," Nguyen said. His ultimate goal is to walk without needing his wheelchair one day. It is a mission that has not gone unnoticed. "It would be hard to find someone in this gym that doesn't know the guy," Ryan Firle said. Firle is the manager at Genesis Health Clubs. He … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy can’t stop me from surfing – News24
Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017
Ashtan Davids loved to watch his brother surf. Looking on from the shore, he longed to join in the water. But Davids has Cerebral Palsy. Restricted muscle movement and coordination prevented him from accessing the surf safely. And even though Davids brother could take him out in the shallows, his chances of ever catching waves on his own were slim. Until someone flipped the situation on its head by positioning the board as the barrier, not Davids condition. Inspired by Davids determination to become a surfer, Projects Abroad Surfing (PAS) offered their support to help him realise his dream. The first step was to have a custom board made. Davids ride is cut to his body shape. Its kitted out with four handles and fins to give him maximum control. Putting in the hard graft on his side, he undergoes physiotherapy and muscle memory training to ensure that his body is up for the task. Thanks to the support of PAS and his family, who have always challenged him to grow, Davids has not only been able to surf, but become a competitive adaptive surfer a phenomenal victory of spirit over body. He competes in the Assisted Surfing category, meaning … Continue reading

Designed to ease brushing for those with the condition, Manipal scholars in talks with companies for commercial launch After working for almost six months on a unique toothbrush that will help persons with cerebral palsy, Evit John and Sai Nivedita from Dentogen Manipal, a team that represents the Manipal College of Dental Sciences, secured the first prize at the recently-held Provenance-2017 Manipal Universitys annual B-Plan contest. The prototype presented at the competition won a seed capital of Rs 5 lakh. While Evit John is a fresh graduate from the college, Sai Nivedita is a third-year student. Speaking to Bangalore Mirror of their feat, Evit John said, I was deeply moved by a YouTube video and decided to do something for cerebral palsy patients. Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation during a childs brain development. Cerebral palsy primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination. The video, Evit recalled, was about a daily blogger who suffers cerebral palsy explaining the difficulty for people like him in doing basic things like brushing teeth. At times, it takes 10-15 minutes. Since it was time consuming, he would skip brushing his teeth sometimes. Explaining the prototype, Nivedita … Continue reading

Dad’s Facebook Appeal To Find Feeding Tube For Daughter With Cerebral Palsy Is Huge Success – Huffington Post UK
Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017
A dad who appealed on Facebook for a specific sized feeding tube for his daughter who has cerebral palsy, was overwhelmed by the response. Dan Grace, from Newcastle, urged others to share his Facebook post to find his seven-year-old daughter a tube to help her eat. She had fallen ill due to the tube in her stomach being the wrong size. However, the device she needed (Viagon 2cm x 30cm G) had a supply issue and was difficult to source. Weve seen enough of Mollys discomfort now (years worth) and as Mollys parents and her voice, we arent prepared to sit back and watch this happen any longer, Grace wrote on Facebook on Thursday 13 April. Grace continued: We are asking that this appeal be liked, shared (on your Facebook pages, friends Facebook pages, special needs Facebook pages, hospital Facebook pages and anywhere else) and comment (your location) to try and help us get one of these Viagon 2cm x 30cm G Jet devices urgently. The post was widely shared within hours, including within private and internal hospital Facebook pages. Sarah-Jane Cameron, founder of medical transport charity Scottish Emergency Rider Volunteer Service (ScotsERVS) saw the post on Facebook and informed … Continue reading

When Keisha Young-Haeckers son, Thomas, entered the world as a micro-preemie at one pound, 14 ounces, gripping fear eclipsed the joy. Infection during her pregnancy induced labour at just 23 weeks. Thomas spent three-and-a-half months in a NICU incubator at Mount Sinai Hospital. Doctors forecasted a dark fate for the newborn. Doctors said he would have severe cerebral palsy, Young-Haecker recalled. They said he would be blind, couldnt speak, and would be severely handicapped. The doctor said Its cute going up and down the stairs when you have a little baby. But can you imagine having a 50-pound baby boy, who cant do anything for himself, and you have to lift him up and down the stairs all the time? And that was his way of telling us, maybe now is a good time to let him go. I wanted to prove him wrong. I was angry. How dare you tell me this is what is going to happen. The couple didnt let go of their son. Thomas began intensive interventions when he arrived home at 10 months old, including osteopathy and physiotherapy that cost his parents $250 a week, and later, speech therapy and occupational therapy. Thomas wears leg … Continue reading

Princeton Ethics Professor Defends Woman Convicted of Raping Man With Cerebral Palsy – GOPUSA
Posted: Published on April 16th, 2017
A professor at Princeton University argues that the rape of a man with cerebral palsy is perfectly fine and should be legal especially when the intellectually disabled person does not understand sexual consent. Peter Singer a bioethicist who champions infanticide and bestiality at the acclaimed Ivy League school insists that because a mentally challenged individual cannot comprehend the concept of consent to have sex, raping that individual should not be considered harmful. The tenured professor shared his take on the topic while writing a New York Times op-edin defense of former Rutgers University ethics professor, Anna Stubblefield, who was imprisoned for aggravated sexual assault of a man diagnosed with cerebral palsy. In October 2015, she was convicted of the crime. Stubblefield was sentenced to 12 years in prison because she committed illicit sex acts with a 29-year-old man named D.J. who has cerebral palsy, The Christian Post (CP) recounted. The sexual relationship took place over a two-year period and Stubblefield reportedly believed that D.J. communicated to her that he loved and wished to have sex with her through the use of a discredited pseudoscientific technique she employed called facilitated communication or supported typing. According to Singer, the judge and jury … Continue reading

CDT April 14, 2017 A rare spine surgery is helping children with cerebral palsy walk for the first time. (Photo: KHOU) HOUSTON - A rare spine surgery is helping children with cerebral palsy walk for the first time. The procedure is called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, or SDR. Doctors say it is only available one place in Texas: Childrens Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. A family in northwest Houston learned their child was a candidate for the surgery last year. Chandler Rivon, 4, was born premature with hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain. We started noticing when he was able to stand at maybe 15 months and walk, his legs would scissor, said Lashea Rivon, his mother. I felt like he might never walk. Chandler had the procedure last February. Within a few months, he was able to walk with the assistance of a walker. Surgeons like to think that theyre tough. It really breaks you down when you see a 3- or 4-year-old running around that initially came to your office stuck in a walker or stuck in a wheelchair, … Continue reading

Born with cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects body movement and muscle coordination, Benetti wasn't deterred from pursuing a path to sports broadcasting, though even he did not envision how high he might rise. "I never had any aspirations of being a TV person," Benetti told David Axelrod on "The Axe Files," a podcast from the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and CNN. "I was self-conscious about it." Benetti is a graduate of Syracuse University, whose public communications program has produced titans of the sportscasting industry such as Bob Costas and Mike Tirico. Benetti kept to radio during college, but support from his producers at ESPN pushed him toward television. "It was probably a couple years into it that I felt really OK on camera," Jason said. "And then at some point, I said, 'You know what? It's gonna look how it's gonna look. And whatever flows from that is gonna flow from that.'" What has flowed from Benetti's broadcasting career -- in addition to popular and critical acclaim -- is a public platform to articulate the struggles that people with disabilities face and demonstrate what is possible when looking past someone's perceived deficiencies. "My concern is that … Continue reading
