Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017
Her parents were told their newborn would never walk - but just look at Gillian Craig now. The 35-year-old medical receptionist, who has cerebral palsy, has always refused to let her condition become an impediment. It's a mindset that has seen her racing ahead of competitors - and not just in everyday life. Despite having difficulties with lower limb balance and coordination, the Magheramorne woman has completed the last of eight races in the popular Born 2 Run, Run Forest Run series. Speaking following her "massive personal achievement", Gillian - who has a twin sister who is unaffected by the condition -said that running has changed the way she sees the world. "I was never meant to walk, never mind run," she said. "I'd never been sporty and with my condition I was the one who was always given a head start on sports day when I was at school. "But then one day I did my local park run and I suppose it all really started from there. "In the past two years I've made so many friends through running, it has turned my life around and I've even become a bit of a celebrity as the girl from … Continue reading

First, let me tell you I dont know much about cerebral palsy, but Im learning. Google tells me it is a term used for a group of disorders that affect a persons ability to move. Its a lifelong condition that can affect body movement, muscle control, posture, balance, etc. Some people may also have visual, learning, hearing, speech, epilepsy and intellectual impairments. A recent day trip opened our eyes to some of the daily barriers faced by people with mobility challenges. A few years ago a friend asked if I would drive to Windsor to consider window treatments for a house. At the time I didnt know that she kept a house there just to use for weekends with her daughter. Pat explained that her daughter, Cara, had cerebral palsy and was in a small options home. As I asked more questions I learned that the condition was caused from birth trauma. Cara also has visual impairment. One weekend my husband and I journeyed to Windsor to look at the windows. When we arrived we were introduced to a lovely young lady. Cara wasnt a bit shy, and had lots of questions for us. It seems she loves dates not … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects the part of the brain that controls muscle movements. Because of this, cerebral palsy can permanently affect balance, muscle coordination and other body movements. Cerebral palsy typically appears in infancy or childhood and is usually diagnosed before the age of three. It is the most common childhood disability, affecting one in every 500 babies. Although there is no cure, it is not a degenerative disease so children can begin learning to manage it immediately after diagnosis. There are a number of treatment options available to help manage the symptoms of cerebral palsy and can be tailored to suit each individuals needs, depending on the specific effects and severity of their condition. Treatment options include physical or occupational therapy, speech therapy, medication, corrective surgery, braces or other orthotic devices, wheelchairs or walking aids and communication aids. The earlier treatment begins, the more opportunities a child has to make adjustments and grow accustomed to new ways of accomplishing tasks. Cerebral palsy can cause difficulty performing voluntary movements. Some symptoms include stiff muscles, a different gait or way of walking and muscle tone that is too stiff or too floppy. Other neurological symptoms can arise … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture that is caused by damage that occurs to the immature, developing brain, most often before birth. Signs and symptoms appear during infancy or preschool years. In general, cerebral palsy causes impaired movement associated with abnormal reflexes, floppiness or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteady walking, or some combination of these. People with cerebral palsy may have problems swallowing and commonly have eye muscle imbalance, in which the eyes don't focus on the same object. People with cerebral palsy also may suffer reduced range of motion at various joints of their bodies due to muscle stiffness. Cerebral palsy's effect on functional abilities varies greatly.
