I’m Celebrating Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month For the First Time … – TeenVogue.com
Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017
Who doesnt love a good celebration? The excuse to get dressed up, go somewhere nice, and celebrate someone for doing something great, being born, or having something great happen to them. I am the friend in my friend groups who loves everyone elses birthday as much as my own and is always willing and eager to surprise my friends, whether that be a surprise trip to visit them in Pittsburgh or concert tickets to see our favorite artists. I love a celebration, but I have always struggled with celebrating one thing: Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month. I have cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy comes in many forms and has varying types; it's known as CP for short. CP is essentially a neurological disorder that is often caused by a malformation while a childs brain is developing. My case of CP is a milder one that allows me to walk without a mobility aid but still requires rest and the gifts of aching joints, hips, knees, and heels. It takes a while to get dressed in the morning, and I cant walk long distances; arch support is my best friend, and so is tiger balm on particularly bad days. Think of my left … Continue reading

Fundraiser for local teacher with cerebral palsy takes off – Longview Daily News
Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017
When Kelso High School teacher Rick Davis published a GoFundMe campaign page for fellow teacher John Janke, he expected it to get a little attention, but not much. The page sought to raise $20,000 for a new motorized wheelchair for Janke, who has cerebral palsy and relies on the use of his motorized wheelchair to travel everywhere. I was thinking $20,000 was a pretty lofty goal, Davis said Tuesday afternoon. But by the time he went to bed at 11 p.m. Monday night, the page had already raised $18,000. By Tuesday afternoon, 24 hours after the campaign had gone live, the page had raised more than $24,000. The money will go toward purchasing a new motorized chair for Janke, Davis said. The chair will cost between $15,000 and $20,000. And additional funds raised will be set aside for repairs, Davis said. Janke said the engine for his wheelchair broke down almost a month ago, and the repair cost him $2,100. But the chair has been unreliable and he needs a new one, partly because his new insurance policy will not cover repairs if the machine is used outside his home. Though his palsy doesnt prevent him from standing, the chair … Continue reading

Please enable Javascript to watch this video GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Rockford athlete, Johnny Agar, challenged his inspiration Michael Phelps to train with he and his father, or cheer them on, as they prepare in hopes of being invited back to the IRONMAN World Championship. At 23, Agar has competed in more races than most, competing on a world stage with cerebral palsy: from walking the final mile Aug. 2013 in a Rockford 5K featured on ESPN's E:60, to the 2016 IRONMAN World Competition in Kona. For the past eight years, he and his father Jeff, Team Agar, pushed beyond even what they thought their limits were. Thursday arriving on his campus at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Agar is a local celebrity, high-fiving basketball players as soon as he was inside the training complex. He's a sports management student whose presence is known. On his Team Agar website, he published a training video that's getting thousands of views in just two days: him training for Kona this fall, mirroring his inspiration Michael Phelps in his Under Armour "Rule Yourself" campaign. Agar says Phelps and his former routine is training Team Agar. I showed dad the video," said Agar, "so … Continue reading

More Lifestyle Sometimes we just need someone extraordinary to give us a push, give us some motivation to be able to do anything that we put our minds to. Last October, Johnny, who has cerebral palsy, was chosen to participate in the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Accompanied by his father, Johnny struggled through the race not giving up, until an unfortunate squall during the swim made the 200 yards a huge problem for Johnny and the energy he needed for the remainder of the race. Despite this, he made better time than was hoping to in the swim, but much of his energy was gone, so he was unable to make the biking cut-off time. This hasnt stopped Johnny, as he has an extraordinary role model, Micheal Phelps. To get himself motivated, Johnny would watch the Under Armour commercial featuring Phelps, Rule Yourself to help give him the never-give-up attitude that he has. In the video below, you will see Johnny walking by himself, for the first time he and his family owe this all to the inspiration that Phelps is. The rest is here: Man With Cerebral Palsy Imitates Michael Phelps Rule Yourself Video - SwimSwam … Continue reading

Baby Connor McCue diagnosed with cerebral palsy – months after successful liver transplant – Stoke Sentinel
Posted: Published on March 24th, 2017
Comments(0) The parents of young liver transplant survivor Connor McCue have revealed he has now been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Baby Connor, who was born with the rare childhood disease Biliary Atresia, underwent the successful operation in January. He was kept in intensive care at Birmingham Children's Hospital because of his blood pressure dropping, so doctors sent him for an MRI scan to check for possible infections. Now results have shown that the nine-month-old tot, from Meir Heath, has 'significant' brain damage, although no infection has been found. His mother, Jessica McDonagh, is staying positive, despite the latest diagnosis. Read more: Meir Heath baby Connor McCue set to leave intensive care after lifesaving liver transplant The 28-year-old said: "He had an MRI scan on Friday that showed significant brain damage that they classed as cerebral palsy. It's where there has been a lack of oxygen to the brain and, at some point, he's had a few strokes, probably when he's been under sedation. "However, he's not doing anything to suggest he has brain damage. He's looking around and responding to us all. He's off a ventilator and is doing really well. "He's still in intensive care, but we are quite … Continue reading
