Underground Carbon Dioxide Storage Process Faces Clogs, MIT Says
Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015
Basic chemistry is generating questions about the effectiveness of storing carbon dioxide underground. The practice involves pumping the greenhouse gas into underground salt caverns, where its supposed to solidify. According to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, much of the carbon dioxide will remain in its gaseous state, and may eventually escape into the atmosphere. The U.S. Environmental Protection agency has estimated that carbon capture and storage technology may eliminate as much as 90 percent of the carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants. The findings suggest that the technique may be less effective than thought at curbing climate change. If it turns into rock, its stable and will remain there permanently, Yossi Cohen, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, said in an e-mailed statement Wednesday. If it stays in its gaseous or liquid phase, it remains mobile and it can possibly return back to the atmosphere. The basic idea is that the gas is injected into caverns about 7,000 feet (2.1 kilometers) underground where it reacts with salt water and turns into a solid. According to results published this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A, the gas may solidify only at the surface of the underground … Continue reading

Unlikely chemistry benefits both Obama and Modi
Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015
Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited U.S. President Barack Obama in September 2014, the word in New Delhi has been that the two men had chemistry. Mr. Obama broke the ice by leaving his White House staff behind to give Mr. Modi a personal 15-minute tour of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Soon after, Mr. Modi decided to invite Mr. Obama to Republic Day celebrations this month, becoming the first Indian leader to choose an American as his guest for the spectacular annual parade. It is hard to say who was more taken aback: the Americans Mr. Obamas attendance required him to juggle the timing of the State of the Union address or the Indians, when Mr. Obama said yes. He is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday. The emerging goodwill between the two leaders was not preordained. Mr. Modi came into office with a formidable piece of baggage, having been blacklisted by the U.S. government for nearly a decade over his handling of religious riots in Gujarat. U.S. diplomats efforts to mend fences were late and awkward. Beneath the surface of the two leaders personal relationship are the shifting tectonic plates of geopolitics. With the … Continue reading

President Obama, PM Modi Chemistry Can Lead to Positive Outcomes: US
Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015
Washington, United States: President Barack Obama shares a good relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US is hopeful that their chemistry will be helpful in advancing Indo-US ties, a presidential aide has said. Referring to the first meeting between the two leaders at the White House on September 29-30 last year when Modi visited the US, National Deputy Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said they have "struck up a good chemistry", which is good for the two countries. "They had a long discussion over dinner and then the next day, in addition to the meeting, I think it was very meaningful for the President to be able to visit the Martin Luther King memorial with Prime Minister Modi, given the links between Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi," Rhodes said. "That speaks to kind of a shared sense of struggle and shared values between the US and India, and they were able to discuss those issues," he said. "So our hope is that the chemistry between the leaders and the personal relationship can lead to positive outcomes for our country. So it's worth the investment in the relationship with the country, the leader, and the people of India," he … Continue reading

Decoding the Modi-Obama chemistry
Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015
'The two leaders have a lot in common, from their humble beginnings to coming into office following high-energy campaigns and generating high expectations. They sort of "changed the way in which politics is practised" in India and the United States.' Aziz Haniffa/Rediff.com reports from Washington, DC, on what makes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama get along so well. US President Barack Obama with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, in September 2014. Photograph: Alex Wong/Getty Images At a White House teleconference previewing Barack Obamas visit to India next week, American journalists were intrigued by the chemistry between the United States president and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and what led to their almost picture-perfect rapport. Ben Rhodes, deputy national security advisor for strategic communications and a close aide to Obama, and Phil Reiner, senior director at the national security council for South Asia, explained that both leaders had a lot in common, from the use of new technology and humble beginnings to coming into office following high-energy campaigns and generating high expectations, that evidently made them tick. Modi, recalled Rhodes, is a very ambitious leader and he was … Continue reading
