Tomas Lindahl, Paul L Modrich and Aziz Sancar are awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovery of how cells repair DNA and help it recover from punishments meted out by both body and environment. MORE Op-Ed article by Prof Oliver Sacks describes taking comfort in samples of elements that have marked his most recent birthdays, such as that of element 82, lead, and 83, bismuth, a birthday he does not believe he will see; reflects on finding solace in thinking of eternal things as he faces inevitability of his death. MORE Dr John Sutherland of University of Cambridge issues report offering his tested hypothesis that life on Earth may have emerged from chemicals that were present on the planet prior to existence of planet's first living cells; Sutherland's research grew from his discovery within last decade of chemical key to RNA, building block of living cells. MORE LiquiGlide, company begun by professor and students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has developed coating for inside of packaging that keeps materials from glue to mayonnaise from sticking to it; product has potential to significantly reduce waste by allowing consumers to use entire contents of package. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2015 – Press Release
Posted: Published on October 8th, 2015
7 October 2015 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2015 to Tomas Lindahl Francis Crick Institute and Clare Hall Laboratory, Hertfordshire, UK Paul Modrich Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC, USA and Aziz Sancar University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA for mechanistic studies of DNA repair" The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2015 is awarded to Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich and Aziz Sancar for having mapped, at a molecular level, how cells repair damaged DNA and safeguard the genetic information. Their work has provided fundamental knowledge of how a living cell functions and is, for instance, used for the development of new cancer treatments. Each day our DNA is damaged by UV radiation, free radicals and other carcinogenic substances, but even without such external attacks, a DNA molecule is inherently unstable. Thousands of spontaneous changes to a cells genome occur on a daily basis. Furthermore, defects can also arise when DNA is copied during cell division, a process that occurs several million times every day in the human body. The reason our genetic material does not disintegrate into complete chemical chaos is that … Continue reading

Rotation Director: Diana Desai, MD This rotation is designed to provide an in-depth exposure to the clinical and technical aspects of the clinical chemistry laboratory. It is presented as a structured series of discussions covering the breadth of clinical chemistry from the viewpoint of the responsibility of the medical director. Opportunities to observe and participate in bench activities are both a formal part of the rotation as well as available for further experience based on the resident's interest. While on rotation, the resident is expected to serve as a resource for the chemistry laboratory in communicating unusual findings and determining the most appropriate course of action after discussion with the clinical service. Goals and Objectives: Patient Care: Residents must understand the technical requirements necessary for medical decision-making and the role of the medical director in ensuring that the needs of the patient and the ordering clinician are served. Residents are expected to: Medical Knowledge: Residents must demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving test methodologies and application of this knowledge to patient care. Residents are expected to: Practice-based Learning and Improvement: Residents must be able to demonstrate the ability to evaluate and improve their clinical practices based on new and evolving … Continue reading

Chemistry.com – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chemistry.com is an online dating service. It is the sister site of Match.com and was established by the same team that worked for that company.[1] The site's policies involve specifically pairing members for long-term relationships using methods it refers to as "compatibility" and "chemistry", hence its eponym. Chemistry.com's matching algorithm was designed by Dr. Helen Fisher, a professor of anthropology and scholar, and features interviews and contributions from her along with MSN spaces page, "The Great Mate Debate".[2] On January 30, 2009, ABC's 20/20 aired a two-hour special featuring Dr. Fisher and discussing her theory and research behind the Chemistry.com personality test and matching. The website became notable after several ads portrayed online daters who were rejected by eHarmony, including one which featured a gay man, highlighting the fact that eHarmony will not match people with individuals of the same gender.[3][4] In April 2008, Chemistry launched a new set of advertisements signifying the second phase of its long-term strategy, by taking the conventional wedding vows shared between two people and re-inventing them "Chemistry style". As of June 2013, more than 8 million people across the world have taken the Chemistry.com personality test. [5] Read this article: Chemistry.com - Wikipedia, the … Continue reading

Radical (chemistry) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Posted: Published on September 13th, 2015
In chemistry, a radical (more precisely, a free radical) is an atom, molecule, or ion that has unpaired valency electrons.[1] With some exceptions, these unpaired electrons make free radicals highly chemically reactive towards other substances, or even towards themselves: their molecules will often spontaneously dimerize or polymerize if they come in contact with each other. Most radicals are reasonably stable only at very low concentrations in inert media or in a vacuum. A notable example of a free radical is the hydroxyl radical (HO), a molecule that has one unpaired electron on the oxygen atom. Two other examples are triplet oxygen and triplet carbene (:CH 2) which have two unpaired electrons. In contrast, the hydroxyl anion (HO) is not a radical, since the unpaired electron is resolved by the addition of an electron; singlet oxygen and singlet carbene are not radicals as the two electrons are paired. Free radicals may be created in a number of ways, including synthesis with very dilute or rarefied reagents, reactions at very low temperatures, or breakup of larger molecules. The latter can be affected by any process that puts enough energy into the parent molecule, such as ionizing radiation, heat, electrical discharges, electrolysis, and … Continue reading

Chemistry Tapas and Tonics – Virginia Beach, VA – Yelp
Posted: Published on September 1st, 2015
2 check-ins Errrrrrgh, let's talk about Chemistry. I've got to say at a few things about this place. Out of all of the bars associated with The Block, Chemistry is probably my least favorite. Why? Chemistry has the appearance of being a "step up" in class from the other bars at The Block. If you asked someone whom was merely glancing at the three bars, from the outside, which one is the nicest --I guarantee you, every time that person would say Chemistry. But, why? One reason: It's called Chemistry TAPAS and TONICS. The name, itself, emits a classier vibe than The Edge or Sandbar. The employees wear black button-downs and ties. But, honestly, this is the most lackluster place. And, sadly, the one that I wish was my favorite. Every time I've visited Chemistry, I wished that they actually had tapas. Maybe they do. But, I can tell ya; I've been here probably 10+ times and can say that I've never once seen a tapas menu, nor have I seen any pictures of their tapas selection. The caliber of their drink selections is very similar to The Edge or Sandbar ... It's just okay. Definitely nothing to write home … Continue reading
