Nobel Prize researcher credits early ONR support

Posted: Published on December 12th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 11-Dec-2014 Contact: Peter Vietti onrpublicaffairs@navy.mil 703-696-5031 Office of Naval Research Two decades ago, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) helped Dr. W.E. Moerner in his quest to find "a molecule in a haystack," work that is transforming the field of medicine and has earned the Stanford University professor the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which he received Dec. 10. Moerner's work has informed a new generation of scientists and created new possibilities in microbiology for disease management and drug development that could aid in the fight against Alzheimer's and other diseases. "Dr. Moerner is the latest in a long line of Nobel Prize winners that have had key research sponsored by ONR," said Dr. Walter F. Jones, ONR executive director. "Like the others, his discoveries and breakthroughs have implications for both the Navy and society at large." ONR sponsored Moerner with a series of grants between 1982 and 1992 when the current Stanford professor was with IBM and laying the foundation for the work that has now earned him a Nobel Prize. ONR's interest at the time was to develop techniques to observe atomic scale phenomena that would validate quantum mechanical theoretical predictions. In essence, Moerner has … Continue reading

U-Va. students challenge Rolling Stone account of alleged sexual assault

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2014

It was 1 a.m. on a Saturday when the call came. A friend, a University of Virginia freshman who earlier said she had a date that evening with a handsome junior from her chemistry class, was in hysterics. Something bad had happened. Arriving at her side, three students Randall, Andy and Cindy, as they were identified in an explosive Rolling Stone account told The Washington Post that they found their friend in tears. Jackie appeared traumatized, saying her date ended horrifically, with the older student parking his car at his fraternity, asking her to come inside and then forcing her to perform oral sex on five men. In their first interviews about the events of that September 2012 night, the three friends separately told The Post that their recollections of the encounter diverge from how Rolling Stone portrayed the incident in a story about Jackies alleged gang rape at a U-Va. fraternity. The interviews also provide a richer account of Jackies interactions immediately after the alleged attack and suggest that the friends are skeptical of her account. The scene with her friends was pivotal in the article, as it alleged that the friends were callously apathetic about a beaten, bloodied, … Continue reading

Chemists Pick New Leader for Worlds Largest Science Society

Posted: Published on December 10th, 2014

Former DuPont executive wants to improve consumer information and science education Thomas M. Connelly, Jr. With more than 161,000 members, the American Chemical Society is the worlds largest organization of scientists, almost all of them chemists or involved in chemistry-related businesses. The society is also a leading publisher, with about 45 scientific journals in its portfolio. The person running the society, then, has a lot of influence over a big slice of science. Last week the society announced that person would be Thomas M. Connelly, Jr., a chemical engineer who has spent his career at DuPont, the giant chemical manufacturer, most recently as the companys chief innovation officer. He will become the chief executive officer of the ACS in February 2015, after the current chief executive retires. Connelly plans to focus on improving the scientific education of students, consumers, and policymakers, he told Scientific American in an interview, as well as on building up society membership and its publishing strengths. I couldnt think of a better role for someone who has spent their life in the chemical enterprise, he says. [An edited transcript of the interview follows.] What are your priorities going to be as CEO? I would like to … Continue reading
