WVU Chemistry Department Presents Annual Children’s Chemistry Show

Posted: Published on December 7th, 2014

MORGANTOWN - West Virginia University's Chemistry Department presented its annual 'Children's Chemistry Show.' There was a 75 minute presentation show that featured demonstrations, hands-on activities, and for those who wanted a tour of the WVU Chemistry facilities. "So what we try to do is find some things that are interesting, but still entertaining and to get people interested in what Chemistry is about. It is basically figuring out how to make new materials and things like that," said Terry Gullion, professor of Chemistry. Some of the most popular demonstrations from years past returned while many of the demonstrations were brand new. "It's an opportunity to start giving kids a hands on. 'This is what chemistry is, this is what you want to do if you go down this road.' And I think it's very interesting stuff," Gullion said. Even when the show was over, the learning didn't stop. The children could participate in activities with the faculty and volunteers that consisted of undergraduate students from the university. "All we think about is stimulate interest because kids at this stage, their imagination is wild. Whenever you can give them a chance to lead that imagination onto science, I always think that … Continue reading

WAYNESBURG Waynesburg Universitys American Chemical Society student chapter was recently selected to receive the Outstanding Chapter Award from the American Chemical Society for the fifth consecutive year. The award is a result of the chapters activities conducted during the 2012-13 academic year. More than 400 student chapter annual activity reports were reviewed by the Society Committee on Education. As a result of the reports, 280 awards were given, including 44 Outstanding, 85 Commendable, and 151 Honorable Mention awards. Waynesburg University was one of only 44 chapters selected to receive the Outstanding Award. Under the direction of Dr. Robert LaCount, professor emeritus of chemistry at Waynesburg University, and Dr. Evonne Baldauff, assistant professor of chemistry and chair of the department of chemistry, the ACS student chapter was highly involved in campus and community outreach activities throughout the year, such as monthly labs for homeschooled students, a Haunted Lab open to the campus and local community and the Food Chemistry and Green Chemistry programs offered to local Girl Scout members, among many others. Student chapter members also provide service to the department, work to foster community within the group through social events offered throughout the academic year, and participate in National Chemistry … Continue reading

05.12.2014 - (idw) Johannes Gutenberg-Universitt Mainz Chemistry professor from Mainz University developed in a collaborative research project a novel foil packaging material that displays information on food freshness by means of color changes The Mainz chemistry professor Katja Heinze and her Luxembourg cooperation partner Dr. Patrick Choquet have received the Interregional Research Award for the development of novel, intelligent foils for food packaging. This is the sixth time this award worth EUR 35,000 has been presented. Its purpose is to promote collaboration in cross-border research projects and reinforce the profile of the interregional research landscape. "To offer capable partners the best conditions for cross-border cooperation that is the main aim of our mutual cooperation strategy in the sector of higher education and research in the Greater Region. The SURFAMINE research project that has been honored with the 2014 Interregional Research Award is an outstanding example of the potential that lies in cross-border cooperation," emphasized State Secretary Professor Thomas Deufel of the Ministry of Education, Science, Continuing Education, and Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate. Augsburgs greener way to do chemistry

Greener science. (Alex Friedrich / MPR) Ive just been introduced to green science. Im in Prof. Michael Wentzels organic chemistry class, and hes showing his students how to do chemistry in a more environmentally friendly way Benign by design, as he puts it. Theyre reproducing a fluorescent substance found in scorpions but doing it without generating all the waste thats usually produced in such chemical processes. Wentzel uses a combination of heating and mixing to enable his components to form chemical bonds, thus avoiding the use of solvents and thus taking one more chemical out of the equation. And to get his components to react with each other more efficiently, Wentzel uses a polymer styrene catalyst instead of the usual toxic mineral acid. The professor tells me: Its how we should train scientists now. Companies want scientists that know the way to design chemistry to be more environmentally friendly. Chemistry doesnt need to be a fixer of problems. It can be a way to never have the problems in the first place. Alex Friedrich reports on higher education issues for MPR News. Among the stories he has covered: the fall of the Berlin Wall, aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, collapse of … Continue reading
