Chemistry teacher’s explosive mistake goes viral
Posted: Published on November 11th, 2014
CAIRO, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- An Egyptian chemistry teacher became a viral video star when a botched demonstration caused an explosion in his classroom. Ahmed Gabr, 38, was teaching his class in Cairo about producing oxyhydrogen, also known as "bang gas," and was attempting to create a mild reaction when he got the quantities wrong and caused a glass container filled with boiling chemicals to explode. No one appears to be injured in the video, but some children can be heard praying while fleeing from the explosion. Asim Kanika, whose child is in Gabr's class, described the teacher as a "fool." "He's very lucky that none of the children were really hurt, just very scared and shaken up," Kanika said. 2014 United Press International, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Chemistry the biggest factor in Arizonas quest for a national title
Posted: Published on November 11th, 2014
Arizona looks to establish a camaraderie similar to that of last seasons team (Getty Images) Beginning on October 3rd and running up until November 14th, the first day of the season, College Basketball Talk will be unveiling the 2014-2015 NBCSports.com college hoops preview package. MORE: 2014-2015 Season Preview Coverage | NBCSports Preseason Top 25 | Preview Schedule After winning 27 games and reaching the Sweet 16 in 2012-13, big things were expected of the Arizona Wildcats in 2013-14 and Sean Millers team delivered.Despite having to replace three of their top four scorersthe Wildcats won 33 games and a regular season Pac-12 title, reachingthe Elite 8of the NCAA tournament as well.Arizona didnt have the deepest rotation, especially after forward Brandon Ashley was lost for the season in early February with a foot injury, but they had talent, athleticism and a stingy half-court defense that was among the best in the country. Even more is expected of the Wildcats in 2014-15, with Ashley back to full strength as he joins point guard T.J. McConnell and center Kaleb Tarczewski as the teams returning starters. Add in the likes of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Gabe York, who were reserves a season ago, and one of … Continue reading

Chelsea Peretti might be One of the Greats of comedy
Posted: Published on November 11th, 2014
Chelsea Peretti fans love the chemistry of the ensemble cast of Foxs Golden Globe-winning comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which features comedy heavy hitters Terry Crews and Andy Samberg. That chemistry might be because its not the first time shes teamed with Samberg: They went to elementary school together in Oakland, Calif. I used to have a crush on him, admits Peretti, who is currently dating another comedian: Jordan Peele of Comedy Centrals Key & Peele. Perettis rescue dog is a star of her social media accounts.Photo: Luke Fontana I would call [Sambergs] house and hang up and stuff, she recalls. He probably wasnt a participant in that experience. In addition to stealing scenes on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as civilian administrator Gina Linetti, a recently ousted member of a cringe-worthy dance troupe called Floorgasm, Perettis got a new Netflix comedy special coming out Friday. Its called One of the Greats, but dont worry shes not letting sitcom fame get to her head. Its very serious, Peretti, 36, tells The Post of the title, with her usual deadpan drawl. With 10 verys, so it looks sarcastic, even in print. The title is a riff on the over-the-top bravado male comedians tend to bring to … Continue reading

Calipari’s master’s in chemistry about to pay off for Kentucky
Posted: Published on November 11th, 2014
Tune in to FOX Sports Live next week for Reids one-on-one interview with John Calipari. LEXINGTON, Kentucky Heres an essay question for you: Use logic, statistics and common sense to explain the 2013-14 Kentucky basketball season. Go ahead. Open that blue book. Give it a try. I dare you. Here is the set of facts youll be working with: Around this time a year ago, we were talking about how super freshman Julius Randle and the rest of Kentuckys greatest-ever recruiting class of six McDonalds All-Americans had a shot at college basketballs holy grail, the perfect season, something that hasnt been accomplished since Bobby Knights Indiana Hoosiers did it in 1976. Head coach John Calipari wasnt the one to first bring up the possibility of 40-0, but it sure wasnt like he tossed any water on that fire. Then the ball was tossed in the air, and Kentucky struggled. They struggled with moving the ball, they struggled with making free throws, they struggled with making threes. They struggled with everything. They came out one game and looked like world-beaters; they came out the next game and looked lost, as if theyd never played a game together. They lost three games … Continue reading

Space: The final frontier in silicon chemistry
Posted: Published on November 11th, 2014
November 11, 2014 - Silicon, which is one of the most common elements in the Earth's crust, is also sprinkled abundantly throughout interstellar space. The only way to identify silicon-containing molecules in the far corners of the cosmos - and to understand the chemistry that created them - is to observe through telescopes the electromagnetic radiation the molecules emit. Scientists from the University of Tokyo, in Japan, have now determined the unique electromagnetic emission spectrums of two new, highly-reactive silicon compounds. The research, which is published in The Journal of Chemical Physics from AIP Publishing, will help astronomers look for the molecules in the interstellar medium. "Like human fingerprints and DNA sequences are the markers of human identity, we can identify molecules from the frequencies of the electromagnetic waves emitted by them," said Yasuki Endo, a researcher in the Department of Basic Science at the University of Tokyo. Using spectroscopic techniques, scientists have already detected silicon-containing molecules in the gaseous clouds that envelop some stars and in the sparsely populated space between stars. In space, silicon is often found in dust grains containing stable compounds called silicates. However, highly reactive molecules, such as SiCN, have also been detected in the … Continue reading
