UCLA legal fees neared $4.5 million in lab fire case

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

After UCLA chemistry professor Patrick Harran walked out of court in June, his lawyers issued a news release hailing the "first-of-its-kind" deal that all but freed him from criminal liability in a 2008 lab fire that killed a staff researcher. The "deferred prosecution agreement" that allowed Harran to avoid pleading guilty or no-contest to any charge might have been a novel resolution, as his attorneys said. But it certainly didn't come cheap. Top-tier law firms hired to defend him and the University of California against felony charges in the death of Sheharbano "Sheri" Sangji charged more than 7,700 billable hours and nearly $4.5 million in fees, according to documents obtained by The Times through a California Public Records Act request. Nearly five dozen defense attorneys, paralegals and others billed for work on the case, the records show. One attorney charged $792,000 in fees and at least four other lawyers billed more than $500,000 each all for pretrial work. The University of California paid the fees out of its publicly funded pocket. UCLA said in a statement Wednesday that the expense was justified. "We defended ourselves and our faculty member as was our right and obligation, using funds in a systemwide … Continue reading

Jazz coaches and players believe team chemistry has improved this year

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

Head Coach Quin Snyder poses with Trey Burke and Gordon Hayward as the Utah Jazz hold their media day Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, in Salt Lake City at the Zions Bank basketball center. Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Enlarge photo SALT LAKE CITY A common word Jazz players have used during the preseason is chemistry, with several saying the team chemistry is better this year. When Jazz coach Quin Snyder was asked about it Wednesday, his eyes lit up. Hes happy to hear that his players feel the team's chemistry is stronger. It starts with the organization at the top with the Miller family and is something that is valued, that character counts, Snyder said. (General manager) Dennis (Lindsey) and his staff have tried to be conscious of fit when theyre putting a team together. Its not just character, but theres a lot of ways to create chemistry. Snyder said hes noticed strong chemistry on the court between Trey Burke and Derrick Favors; Burke and Gordon Hayward; and Trevor Booker and Hayward. And even some of the new players are fitting well together already. Look what you see with Dante Exum and Rudy Gobert, Snyder said. I dont think we … Continue reading

Chemistry renovations met with mixed reviews

Posted: Published on October 16th, 2014

Seventeen months after renovations on Sterling Chemistry Laboratory began, students and faculty are still dealing with the effects of working alongside a major construction site. The $130 million project, which began in May 2013, will upgrade the facilitys teaching laboratories. The renovation of the chemistry building is part of a broader Science Hill development that seeks to consolidate science facilities and facilitate interdisciplinary conversation between STEM majors on campus, said Deputy Provost for Science and Technology Steve Girvin. Though the SCL project is on track to be completed in August 2016, Associate Provost for Science and Technology Jim Slattery acknowledged that it has not come without a certain level of inconvenience. It has been somewhat noisier and more intrusive than anyone had hoped, he said. He added, however, that such problems are inevitable in any major construction project. The project aims to completely renovate the inside of the building while maintaining the exteriors appearance. Currently, the north half of the building, where the main teaching laboratories are located, has been excavated and the roof has been removed. [The construction is] basically a building going up inside a building, said Patrick Vaccaro, director of undergraduate studies for the chemistry department. Meanwhile, … Continue reading
