Durkin: Cutler Still Seeking Chemistry With Third Receivers

By Dan Durkin- (CBS)A storyline that emerged during training camp was the Bears offensive coaching staffs decision to give quarterback Jay Cutler repetitions with second- and third-team wide receivers. This was a proactive move to create chemistry in the event injuries affected the wide receiving corps. Considering that both Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery suffered injuries in the first game of the season, it appeared to be a prescient plan. Fortunately for the Bears, Marshall and Jeffery perseveredthrough the pain to playin games, but Cutler is still seeking chemistry with all of his targets. Just as it was last year, the majority of passes are targeted for Marshall, Jeffery, tight end Martellus Bennett and running back Matt Forte. Through four games,85 percent of the targets and receptions have gone to those four players. Its impossible for defensesto double team everyone on a given play, but given the Bears preference for the 11 personnel grouping, its surprising how seldom the third wide … Continue reading

Fire and Ice chemistry show to be held this Saturday

Posted: Published on October 3rd, 2014

The department of chemistry will present Fire and Ice, a demonstration of extreme temperatures, for the first time since 2007. The demonstration is free to the public and will be held in Wetherill Hall, Room 200, from 11 a.m. to noon. The chemistry show will demonstrate the effects of extreme hot and cold temperatures through the use of fire and liquid nitrogen. Its interesting because liquid nitrogen is so much colder than what we experience in our normal lives and temperatures here on the planet, said Paul Smith, director of lecture demonstrations for the department of chemistry. You can tell (the audience) the number (-194 degrees Celsius) but when they see the effect, it really communicates super cold. Liquid nitrogen will be used in, according to Smith, close to a dozen things during the demonstration, using the super cold substance to determine the effect it has on objects such as racquet balls or water balloons. To demonstrate the effects of extreme heat on different things, a lot of fire will be used, according to Smith. In order to heat up things during the presentation, a hot plate or open flame will be used. The department of chemistry has made a … Continue reading

Chemistry professor/geek rockstar to perform at Brew Spot

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014

On the first day of class, a UF chemistry professor plays a song: Its an original dedicated to the trials and tribulations of freshman chemistry. The song? Bonds of Life. The professor? Charles Martin. This Friday, his students will get the chance to see their professor perform his music live. Martin, also known by his musical persona Chuck, will perform Friday from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Brew Spot Cafe, at 1000 NE 16th Ave. Owned by former UF chemistry professor Jeff Keaffaber, the Brew Spot acts as a restaurant and tutoring center by day and moonlights as a musical venue and bar. Students often go there for tutoring in basic all the way up to organic chemistry. Martin is no stranger to performing and recording music. With five albums under his belt, the professor/singer-songwriter began his music career at 10 years old. However, a pressure to be the first in his family to attend college pushed him away from music. (My) hiatus from music lasted through my assistant professor years when I was at Texas A&M University, he said. I worked all the time and had no time for anything else. After getting tenure at Texas A&M, he … Continue reading
