Chemistry lab fire burns students at Denver school

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Four students were injured Monday morning in a chemistry lab accident at Strive Preparatory SMART. (7NEWS) Four students were burned and one suffered serious injuries Monday after a fire erupted in a Denver high school chemistry laboratory while the teacher was conducting a demonstration with methanol, officials said. Three students were treated and released from hospitals, and the fourth was transferred to another facility because of the extent of the student's injuries, said Lindsay Neil, a spokeswoman for the Science, Math and Arts Academy charter school. Neil said she did not have details on that student's injuries or condition. Denver Fire Department spokesman Mark Watson said earlier that one youth had serious injuries. The teacher, whose name was not released, suffered minor injuries to his hands and declined medical treatment, Neil said. It was the second time this month that a fire linked to methanol in a science demonstration caused injuries. Thirteen people, many of them children, were hurt in a flash fire at a Reno, Nev., museum on Sept. 3. An employee applied chemicals in the wrong order in a demonstration simulating a tornado, officials said. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board, a federal agency that investigates chemical accidents, issued … Continue reading

Hydro Dynamics Partners With The Continuous Flow Chemistry Experts Of Proteaf Technologies

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Hydro Dynamics will be partnering with Proteaf Technologies for implementing its Shock Wave Power Reactor cavitation technology in high value continuous processing. Continuous flow chemistry has been widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical markets. Rome, GA (PRWEB) - Hydro Dynamics, Inc. (HDI) of Rome, Georgia (http://www.hydrodynamics.com) announced today that it will be partnering with Proteaf Technologies (Proteaf) of Palos Verdes Estates, CA (http://www.proteaf.com) for implementing its Shock Wave Power Reactor (SPR) cavitation technology in high value continuous processing. Continuous flow chemistry through process intensification has been widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical markets for decades. The continuous chemistry has been especially gaining interest in pharmaceuticals due to its potential for improved process safety, quality, production capacity and yield as well as space savings and reduced reagent use. Utilizing the shockwaves of cavitation, the SPR can often use its process intensification to allow traditionally batch reactions to be converted to true continuous reactions. HDI has implemented this commercially in applications such as biodiesel transesterification, allowing increases in yield and product quality. Proteaf provides HDI a conduit to an exciting array of applications and customers well suited for the SPR. Proteafs technical expertise and experience in continuous chemistry … Continue reading

Big Sean has great chemistry with Ariana Grande

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Big Sean and Ariana Grande have "great chemistry". The rapper has been dating the 'Problem' singer for two months but has been a big fan of her musical talents for some time. He said: "Me and her make a lot of music together and the chemistry between me and her when we work is great. "We got more in the works too. I feel like her voice is crazy, [just] that that big voice comes out of her is insane. I was probably one of the first people to tweet about her music; me and her been friends for years before anything else... "I was the first rapper to perform at the White House, I performed there with Ariana so that was an honour." The couple - who previously worked together on 'Best Mistake' and 'Right There' - haven't publicly confirmed their relationship but were caught on camera backstage at the recent MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) holding hands. However, Sean insists he didn't mind. He told MTV News: "I had no problem with it." See the rest here: Big Sean has great chemistry with Ariana Grande … Continue reading

PRIB: Senate passes Chemistry Profession Act

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Press Release September 15, 2014 Senate passes Chemistry Profession Act The Senate today approved on third and final reading a bill which seeks to regulate and modernize the practice of chemistry in the Philippines. Sen. Antonio "Sonny" Trillanes IV, author and sponsor of Senate Bill No. 914, also known as the Chemistry Profession Act of 2014, said that the existing Republic Act 754 which was enacted in 1952 needed to be reformulated in order to make the law more responsive to the recent developments in Science and Technology. Trillanes said that during the 15th Congress, the bill was passed on final reading in the House of Representatives but had not been approved in the Senate due to time constraint. "Significant changes brought about by the rapid developments in chemistry, science and technology, the rise of international standards, global competition, as well as concerns for the environment, climate change and sustainable development necessitate changes in the chemistry law so that it wil1 be more responsive to these modern developments," Trillanes said. Trillanes said the bill also aimed to update the definition of chemistry and the scope of its professional practice, rationalize the relationship between chemistry and its allied professions and bring … Continue reading

College bond to fuel success, changes

Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014

Clackamas measure bankrolls projects to upgrade, expand Chemistry instructor Nick Hamel has got a stockpile of ideas just waiting for the money to make them happen. Theres nothing I would say is really high-tech in here, says Hamel, opening the door to his 1982 chemistry lab in the Pauling Center at Clackamas Community Colleges Oregon City campus. The chemistry instructor, who started at the college in 1999, has dealt with out-of-date and unsafe equipment for years. The hoods where six people are forced to stand shoulder-to-shoulder as they conduct experiments on Bunsen burners; the eye-level shelf that does nothing but get in the way of his students learning; and the emergency shower with no drain sitting in the corner next to the refrigerator these are just some of things he would like to see gone. Its not updating for the sake of updating, Hamel says of the colleges $90 million bond request to taxpayers this Nov. 4. Ballots arriving to Clackamas County residents excluding those outside the colleges special district in the Lake Oswego, Boring, Damascus and Sandy school districts will list it as Measure 3-447. Hamel just might get his chance this go-around. After voters defeated a more ambitious … Continue reading
