Fire destroys landmark 20 million chemistry lab at Nottingham University
Posted: Published on September 14th, 2014
The shell of the building had been finished, but the project had not yet reached the internal fitting-out phase, according to the university. More than 60 firefighters tackled a huge fire at the Triumph Road site overnight after being called to the University of Nottingham campus shortly after 8.30pm on Friday. No-one was injured and no other buildings were affected as fire crews fought to gain control of the fire while it tore through the timber-framed building, sending burning debris into the sky. Pictures on Twitter showed a huge blaze lighting up the night sky with plumes of smokes coming from the building. The fire was eventually brought under control at around 1am. Joanne Wooler-Ward, group manager for Nottingham Fire and Rescue, said: "No other buildings have been affected, fortunately no people were involved in this fire and we've had 12 crews here, that's over 60 firefighters. "Credit to those firefighters who pulled out all the stops to prevent this fire spreading. "When we arrived, the fire was a significant size - it could be seen from quite a distance - and there was a smoke plume spreading towards the campus area so we sent out a message for people … Continue reading

Chemistry building damaged by fire
Posted: Published on September 14th, 2014
A landmark 20 million chemistry lab destroyed by fire was set to open next year hosting world-leading research. The University of Nottingham's new sustainable chemistry building, still under construction at the city Jubilee Campus, was "completely destroyed" in a blaze first reported at 8.30pm, yesterday. Paul Greatrix, university registrar, said the innovative project was to be "the world's first carbon neutral lab", and would have been home to work aimed at "fundamentally changing how we do chemistry in a more sustainable way". The lab had received a 12 million grant from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline and was set to open some time next year. Mr Greatrix described the building's destruction as a "set-back" but vowed "we will recover, we will re-build and hopefully in short order we'll be on track". The shell of the building had been finished, but the project had not yet reached the internal fitting-out phase, according to the university. More than 60 firefighters tackled a huge fire at the Triumph Road site overnight, bringing the flames under control by 1am. An open day with up to 18,000 prospective students and their families expected to visit the university today is going ahead. Mr Greatrix said the threat of … Continue reading

Hochman: NFL tends to require having team chemistry for passing grade
Posted: Published on September 14th, 2014
Most everyone in the NFL seems to be as high on Denver and Seattle as most everyone in Denver and Seattle is high. The Broncos and Seahawks, bluntly, are once again the toasts of their conferences. But this season, Denver is not only trying to get Seattle-tough, but Seattle-tight. The Broncos' John Fox might have been outcoached in the Super Bowl, but was he also outcooked? Did Pete Carroll cook up chemistry that was as indomitable as his defense? Asked by NFL.com about talent versus chemistry, Carroll explained that "chemistry is way more important. I think clearly if you can get guys to play like they're capable of playing collectively, you can outplay talent. There's nothing like having talent. I like working with that much more than just chemistry but you need attitude and a connective feeling to bring out the best in the group." When the going got tough, Denver crumbled in the Super Bowl. Carroll might come across at times like a kooky coach, but make no mistake, folks he strikes fear in his players. And they work hard for him, and they play hard for each other. Now, some would say the concept of chemistry in sports … Continue reading

60 Firefighters Tackle Huge Blaze At Nottingham University
Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014
Firefighters are still tackling a "significant" blaze at a university chemistry building. About 60 firefighters are at the scene after being called to the University of Nottingham shortly after 8.30pm last night and no casualties have been reported. A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said: "We are dealing with a significant incident. We were called at 8.36pm to a building under construction on Triumph Road in Radford. "The building is part of the University of Nottingham campus. The building was under construction, it was not in use and was about 70% complete. We have around 60 firefighters on the ground and using aerial platforms. We are likely to be here for some time into the morning." Dr Paul Greatrix, tegistrar at the University of Nottingham said: "Firefighters are currently on site dealing with a major fire at our GSK sustainable chemistry building on Jubilee Campus. "Thankfully, there have been no casualties as this is a building that was still under construction. Our number one priority is to ensure that the fire does not spread to other buildings in the vicinity and we are grateful to the fire teams on site who have worked extremely hard to contain the blaze." … Continue reading
