Saudi Arabia won first place in the Seventh Arab Chemistry Olympiad with Egypt bagging the second place and Lebanon third. There was much praise for Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman and Education Minister Prince Khaled Al-Faisal for their support of the event and education in the country on Wednesday. Nasser bin Abdullah Abdulkarim, director general of education in Madinah, congratulated Prince Khaled and Prince Faisal on the achievements of the Saudi delegation. He said this was the outcome of the government's massive spending on education in the country. The olympiad, organized by the ministry and hosted by the Madinah education department, saw the participation of more than 48 students from 12 Arab countries. The closing ceremony was held at Al-Dar Al-Taqwa Hotel. The ceremony started with a recital from the Holy Quran followed by a speech by Abdullah Al-Majed, president of the Federation of Arab Chemists. Those present included Abdul Hameed Masood, director of the department of student activities at the ministry and representatives from Saudi and Arab chemistry associations. BASF, the world's largest chemical company, has a new slogan. The new claim - 'We create chemistry' - echoes the company's, "We create chemistry" strategy, which was announced in 2011. "Since we launched this strategy, BASF has been increasingly focusing on offering its customers functionalized products and solutions based on chemistry as a clever combination of compounds," explained Kurt Bock, chairman of the board of executive directors of BASF. "It is therefore the right time to make the next step and move from 'the chemical company' to 'We create chemistry.'" Chemistry, in this case, refers not only to science but also to the chemistry between people. "This is at the core of BASF and its brand," stated Bock. The new slogan will initially be used in the logo in circumstances directly related to the company's 150th anniversary. As of January 1, 2015, the start of the anniversary year, it will be applied broadly throughout BASF. NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio -- The library recognizes a week set aside for chemistry, a North Royalton nonprofit collects school supplies for needy children and Ohio law enforcement officers teach businesses about alcohol-related law in this edition of Morning Update: The North Royalton branch library, 5071 Wallings Road, will celebrate National Chemistry Week with a program called The Sweet Side of Chemistry from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 25. I'm not sure what's all involved but the library is tossing the word "candy" around when discussing this event. Volunteers from the American Chemical Society will lead the program. Families everywhere are invited. Call 440-237-3800. Operation North Royalton Cares, in its fifth year, helped 67 needy students obtain basic school supplies for the school year. It also collected $630 in donations to help make sure the students have clothes for school. Program supporters include the city of North Royalton, the North Royalton Family YMCA and the city's Office on Aging. The program was co-founded by Councilman Dan Langshaw. The Seventh Arab Chemistry Olympiad hosted by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Saudi Chemistry Society and Arab Federation of Chemists has seen intense competition between the participating boys and girls. Minister of Education Prince Khaled Al-Faisal opened the event in the presence of Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman on Sunday. It features several education and scientific events on various branches of chemistry and has clearly been a learning experience for students. The Arab countries are represented by 136 boys and girls accompanied by 34 chemistry teachers. The organizing committee has also scheduled other events including morning and evening visits to historical sites in Madinah including Uhud Mountain, Two Qibla Mosque, the Trench, Quba Mosque, Maraza Al-Iman exhibition, Holy Quran printing press and shopping trips to malls. The supervisors of the delegations also visited Taiba Secondary, Dar Al-Qalam Center, educational museum and the Hijaz Railway station. The women supervisors were taken to the Madinah Historical Museum and Holy Quran printing press. A cultural and heritage carnival called Madinah Nights was also organized to entertain the Arab delegations at the Ansar Sports Club.
