Team chemistry to lift Ipswich: Sutton
Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2014
RORY Sutton was sidelined with an Achilles injury when Ipswich Force last played - and lost to - Rockhampton. It was early in the season and the new-look Ipswich Force team was still finding its proverbial feet. With another shot at Rockhampton in a more important match tonight, the Force vice-captain is hoping his team's chemistry and depth proves the difference. "I've been a bit slowed down by injuries and so forth but with our team this year, it hasn't hurt us at all," Sutton said preparing for his first QBL semi-final. "We are really deep and we have a great bunch of guys. "We're all mates away from basketball. We all hang out. We watch movies. "We're a closeknit bunch of guys. That makes it easy as well." Sutton, 24, is vice-captain of the Force men's side having joined the Ipswich program last year coming from NSW. He has formed a leadership partnership with captain Zarryon Fereti, hoping to capitalise on last weekend's encouraging quarter-final victory over Bundaberg. "I think we've done quite well and we go up there this week and hopefully more to come," Sutton said. Read the original post: Team chemistry to lift Ipswich: Sutton … Continue reading

A professors view on chemistry, muscles, bones and injury
Posted: Published on August 21st, 2014
NEW YORK A professor emeritus of chemistry who taught for more than 50 years at Long Island University in New York believes that when it comes to sports injuries, the differences in the chemistry of ligaments and tendons compared to muscle and bone may be overlooked. Its a big unknown, but a lot of ball players are getting hurt today, and I got a feeling their muscles are getting too strong for tendons and ligaments and too strong for each other, Lawrence Rocks said. Rocks is a baseball outsider, although son Burton Rocks is a baseball player agent and author. The elder Rocks said that NASA has done the most research on the physical makeup and atrophying of different elements of the body: i.e., how fast bones lose calcium. The ligaments and tendons are proteins which are also carbohydrates, Rocks said. The meniscus between the bones, thats carbohydrate chemistry. That material is the same type of material in your eyeball. Theres a large carbohydrate component complex carbohydrates, theres dozens of them, in the meniscus between bones, in the cartilage and in some of the tendons. The tendons are not pure muscle. Ultimately, Rocks echoed those directly entrenched in the athletic … Continue reading

Boston, Worcester Officials Support Medical Marijuana Dispensary Despite State Rejection
Posted: Published on August 21st, 2014
Good Chemistry of Massachusetts was declared out of the running for one of the states medical marijuana dispensary licenses after state officials said it lacked support. But in the wake of that rejection, city officials in Boston and Worcester are going to bat for the company, The Boston Globe reports. According to the report, Good Chemistry is including letters of support from Worcesters mayor, a city councilor, six state legislators, and Boston City Council President Bill Linehan in a lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order against the state. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below In letters urging the state to reverse its denial of Good Chemistry of Massachusetts dispensary in Worcester, the mayor, a city councilor, and six state legislators wrote that the company has broad support in the city and is being unfairly penalized. In Boston, City Council President Bill Linehan also wrote a letter to the state in June supporting Good Chemistrys plans for a dispensary in the city. On Tuesday, he said he stands by that support even though state health officials have announced that the company was eliminated. You can read the full Boston Globe report here. Maligie takes over as Wolves’ volleyball coach
Posted: Published on August 21st, 2014
Chemistry teachers are known for surprising students with exploding concoctions from time to time. Katy Maligie teaches the subject at American Canyon High School. But as the Wolves volleyball head coach, the only chemistry she wants to see is the kind that makes pistons fire in a well-oiled machine. The 2007 Chico High graduate was a three-year varsity player for the Wildcats, earning All-Eastern Athletic League honors as a junior and again in her senior season, when they finished third out of eight teams. In the two years shes been at American Canyon as JV coach, the Wolves varsity teams have been a far cry from the Chico teams she helped challenge for league titles and make the playoffs. The Wolves have gone a combined 13-37 overall and 8-22 in the Solano County Athletic Conference, placing fourth out of six teams each year. I think the biggest thing I noticed first, she said of when she started coaching at ACHS, was the consistency with the girls. There was no consistency with expectations and that kind of stuff. Coming from a competitive high school program, I was expecting a lot of things that werent here yet because we were still creating … Continue reading

Water leads to chemical that gunks up biofuels production
Posted: Published on August 21st, 2014
Trying to understand the chemistry that turns plant material into the same energy-rich gasoline and diesel we put in our vehicles, researchers have discovered that water in the conversion process helps form an impurity which, in turn, slows down key chemical reactions. The study, which was reported online at the Journal of the American Chemical Society, can help improve processes that produce biofuels from plants. The study examines the conversion of bio-oil, produced from biomass such as wood chips or grasses, into transportation fuels. Researchers used computer simulations to explore what happens to a common bio-oil byproduct. Water, everywhere during biofuels production, turns the byproduct into an impurity that disrupts and blocks the reactions that lead to biofuels. The results apply not only to water but to related liquids in bio-oil such as alcohols and certain acids. The study provides a thorough view of the byproduct phenol reacting with catalysts. Catalysts are what chemists use to speed up the reactions that convert plants into fuels, reactions that occurred deep in the Earth over millions of years and gave us the fossil fuels we use today. "We are getting to the heart of the fundamentals of biofuels catalysis," said co-author Roger … Continue reading

Chemistry student wins three minute thesis event
Posted: Published on August 19th, 2014
Chemistry student wins the University of Canterburys three minute thesis event August 20, 2014 Chemistry student Anna Farquhar who has researched the energy storage potential of thin sheeted carbon graphene, last night won the University of Canterburys fifth annual thesis in three presentation event. Fifteen student finalists were each given three minutes to present their research topics. Computer science and software engineering student Jin Hong was second for presenting his research on cybersecurity, while communication disorders student Sarah Davies was third for her talk on reducing chest infections in acute stroke patients. Organiser of the event Professor Lucy Johnston says all the presentations were outstanding which made a difficult job for judges Sarah Platt (University of Canterbury Students Association president), Paul Fleming (Pro-Vice-Chancellor Science) and Oluwaoyin Kolawole (a visiting Canterbury Fellow with Maori and Indigenous Studies). ends Scoop Media View post: Chemistry student wins three minute thesis event … Continue reading
