Chemistry concentration to tap natural products movement

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

Western Carolina University will launch a new masters degree in chemistry this fall with a professional science concentration in natural products. The new field of study capitalizes on the emerging natural products industry in Western North Carolina, which draws on native botanical extracts for all-natural beauty supplies and toiletries, health supplements, pharmaceuticals, medicine, cleaners, food products and more. WCU hosted a half-day summit last month to launch the new masters concentration and cultivate relationships with natural products businesses. Feedback from the summit has been very positive, indicating a high degree of sustained interest in new natural products-based educational, research and economic development opportunities in Western North Carolina, said Arthur Salido, WCU graduate program director for chemistry and physics. The new chemistry concentration dovetails with WCUs Millennial Initiative, aimed at developing the new millennial campus around the intersection of academia, innovation and industry. A panel discussion included representatives of bio-tech research and development players, natural products companies and small business resources. chemistry.wcu.edu. Team chemistry lifts East All-Star men’s soccer over West

Team chemistry lifts East All-Star men's soccer over West By Zach Mayo Published: 2014-07-22 18:59:00 Updated: 2014-07-23 01:42:30 Updated at 1:42 a.m. Even before taking the field Tuesday night, Sanderson's Ryan Turner knew the East All-Star men's soccer team had a special kind of chemistry. The teamwork played to the East's favor as the team pounded the West All-Stars with two goals from Turner and one more from Fuquay-Varina's Dean Rutherford on the way to a 5-2 win in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game. East-West All-Star Boys Soccer Game (July 22, 2014) I feel like when you come out of Raleigh to play soccer, you have a similar style of play and I think that brought everyone together to mesh really well, said Turner. Even though we were only out here practicing for a couple of days, we already had chemistry going. The East team has now won three of the last five all-star games against the West dating back to 2010. They lead the all-time series, 11-8-4. The West found itself at an early disadvantage midway through the first half. In the 17th minute, Tyler George (New Hanover) capped a long run to the goal with an … Continue reading

Second Story Garage: Scars on 45

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2014

Stars on 45 perform in Second Story Garage. (Paul Aiken / Daily Camera) Musical chemistry is like romantic chemistry. It's hard to come by, but when you find it you know it's special. Danny Bemrose and Aimee Driver have musical chemistry. You know it the moment they blend their voices. We got to hear them do this recently when the band Scars on 45 visited the Garage. Scars features Bemrose and Driver on vocals, with David "Nova" Nowakowski on keys and Chris Durling on percussion. The band, from Bradford, England, was on an American tour. Their understated indie acoustic-pop has already found an audience through American TV. They've had songs on shows such as "CSI: New York" and appearances with Jay Leno. They also have an indirect Colorado connection. In 2012 they toured with Denver band The Fray. When they came to the Garage, Scars on 45 played their songs "Crazy For You," "Golden" and "Tasted Every Tear," then displayed their delightful personalities during their interview with Quentin. What they brought us: A signed soccer ball (aka a football; this was around the time of the World Cup) they had kicked around with members of The Fray. Sign up. Don't … Continue reading

Nealy, Mason tout Techs chemistry, effort

GREENSBORO, N.C. While no official record is available, it can be safely assumed that none of the 28 football players at the ACC Kickoff event attempted to downplay his teams chances Sunday. That said, Georgia Tech guard Shaquille Mason and linebacker Quayshawn Nealy did their best to affirm that their optimism is based on more than good feeling and happy thoughts. The summer workouts are going great, Nealy said. Guys are going the extra mile, going the extra distance and the team chemistry is better than any year Ive been there, definitely. Similar pronouncements have been made by past Yellow Jackets, not to mention members of perhaps every team to ever attend a preseason media function, before seasons such as the Jackets 7-6 effort in 2013. But Nealy and Mason stood resolute in their conviction of a different Tech mindset. They spoke of a collective focus on finishing well to avoid losses to teams like Georgia, Miami and Virginia Tech, when they came up lacking in the fourth quarter. It was one of the key emphases we tried to instill in everybodys head finish the drill, whether it be through the line, through the cone, through the bag finish strong, … Continue reading
