Lake Street Dive is two men and two women, all in the neighborhood of 30, who met at the New England Conservatory of Music. As a group they use jazz instrumentation, more or less trumpet, stand-up bass, guitar, some drums but they play pop and soul, and draw a big following doing it. In fact, a video of them performing on a Boston street corner has been viewed more than 2 million times. Listen to the Story: Sold-Out Crowds "If you put background vocals on anything, people are excited about it," drummer Mike Calabrese says, referring to the lush vocal arrangements that dominate the band's latest album, Bad Self Portraits. "There's something about humans singing in harmony that is just inherently joyful." The members of Lake Street Dive spoke with NPR's Steve Inskeep throughout Monday's episode of Morning Edition, touching on their early shows (in which the other bands were sometimes the only audience members) and how they found their pop sound after an experiment with free jazz. Wilmington native, founder of Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry WILMINGTON - Dr. John C. Warner, a Wilmington resident, has been awarded the 2014 Perkin Medal by the Society of Chemical Industry, the highest honor in American applied chemistry. Joining a list of the greatest scientists and inventors in United State history who have received this award, Dr. Warner is one of the original founders of green chemistry, the science of designing materials and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and or generation of hazardous material. It is a great honor and privilege to be receiving this award, said Warner, I feel that this wonderful recognition is not really just to me, but to all the people who have been working tirelessly in the green chemistry community. Warner has had a successful career in the science field. He received his doctorate in organic chemistry from Princeton University then worked as a researcher for Polaroid. Following a stint teaching at UMass Boston, he founded the Center for Green Chemistry at UMass Lowell. In 2007, he founded the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry with investment firm executive James Babcock.
