Lions notes: Quin’s chemistry with Ihedigbo ‘coming along great’
Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014
Glover Quin never had a chance to develop much chemistry with his partner in the Lions secondary last year, Louis Delmas, because Delmas rarely practiced because of knee pain. Quin has been limited all spring as he recovers from off-season ankle surgery, but he said today the chemistry between him and new safety James Ihedigbo is coming along great. We work out at the same place in Houston so once he signed here we just kind of hit stride, started working out together and started building our relationship right there, Quin said. On the field, its been fun. I havent had actually got a chance to really, really practice with him, but I get to go do individual with him and be in all the meetings and have fun on the field with him, I just dont get to go out and compete with him. Im pretty sure once we get to that point itll get even funner. More: Nick Fairley back to work Quin started all 16 games last year and was one of the Lions most reliable defensive backs despite playing through ankle pain much of the season. He had two sacks and tied a career-high with three … Continue reading

Infographic reveals complex chemistry behind comforting smell of old books
Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014
Old books have a sweet smell with notes of vanilla flowers and almonds, caused by the breakdown of chemical compounds in the paper The smell of new books depends on chemicals used in their manufacture and this can vary from volume to volume British chemistry teacher created the infographic to demystify the differing smells of old and new books and to reveal their chemical compounds By Sarah Griffiths Published: 10:15 EST, 3 June 2014 | Updated: 14:08 EST, 3 June 2014 1,163 shares 23 View comments The smell of books that lingers in second-hand book stores is distinctive, but it is hard to know exactly what creates the nostalgic aroma. Now one British chemistry teacher has created an infographic to explain how and why the scent of antique and new books differ. Old books have a sweet smell with notes of vanilla flowers and almonds, caused by the breakdown of chemical compounds in the paper, while new books smell like they do because of chemicals used in their manufacture. One British chemistry teacher has created an infographic to explain the scent of antique and new books. The anonymous blogger started publishing his infographics six months ago after creating some posters … Continue reading

Dana Point student advances to national You Be The Chemist Challenge California You Be The Chemist finalists (L to R) Brian Chap, Matthew Kim, Ayush Nabar, Brenden Gibson, Conlan Taylor and Sharleen Loh prepare for the final round of state competition. Courtesy photo By Andrea Papagianis Based on empirical evidence, Brendan Gibson is quite the chemistry whiz. This month, the eighth-grader at St. Edward the Confessor Parish School was named the states You Be The Chemist champion. But for Gibson, and his classmates, the preparation began months ago. This program was an excellent means to supplement our chemistry curriculum and science program by providing our school with chemistry content, resources, lab materials and corporate support, said Fran Pijor, the sixth- and eighth-grade science teacher at St. Edwards. The You Be The Chemist Challenge is a question-and-answer competition that tests fifth- through eighth-grade students on chemistry concepts, scientific theories and laboratory safety. It was developed by the Chemical Education Foundation to enhance science education nationwide. Since the challenges introduction four years ago, eighth-grade students at the Dana Point school have studied chemistry throughout the year in preparation. The road to Californias competition began in February as St. Edwards students went head-to-head. … Continue reading
