Chemistry: Alec Christian
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014
Nick Weldon/Old Gold & Black If you passed Alec Christian, dressed casually in a gray hoodie and jeans, on the upper quad, you would think he was just an average college student. However, since his arrival at Wake Forest almost four years ago, the senior chemistry major has been far from average. A native of Salem, Conn., Christian found his way to Winston-Salem after visiting a few colleges in North Carolina. He wanted a small school atmosphere where the professors would actually remember his name. I dont regret that decision at all, Christian said. The small class sizes definitely helped me out in the long run. His Wake Forest career began with a focus on the pre-med track, but after taking organic chemistry and participating in some research, Christian decided to aim for graduate school instead. Hell be attending the University of California, Berkeley next year. Outside of the classroom, Christian has performed research with professor Paul B. Jones since 2010, and has twice interned at Pfizer in Connecticut. For the 2013-14 academic year, he was President of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates after serving as vice president the previous year. Even with such an intense focus on chemistry, … Continue reading

Chemistry proves useful for Hokie softball
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014
Chemistry between college athletes takes time to develop. However, the Virginia Tech softball teams second baseman Kylie McGoldrick and shortstop Lauren Gaskill began their rapport long before their days as Hokies. It was the fall of 2008 when McGoldrick and Gaskill began playing the middle infield together for their travel softball team. They continued to do so until they came to Blacksburg together in 2011. After a two-year hiatus of Gaskill catching pop ups and fly balls in center field and McGoldrick fielding ground balls at second, the two were put in charge of defending the middle infield together once again for their junior season. I would say it took a practice, McGoldrick said. One practice to get the feel back, start turning double plays and everything just clicked. The duo began playing together back when Gaskills travel ball team stopped competing at a level she wanted to compete at and when McGoldricks dad Kevin saw that McGoldricks travel ball team, The Rock, lacked a strong leadoff hitter. I played with a different travel ball team that started to stop competing and just going through the motions, Gaskill said. I still wanted to compete for a title at that 18U … Continue reading

American Association of Chemistry Teachers will begin operating in 2014; AACT is first of its kind in the US
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014
The American Chemical Society (ACS), the worlds largest scientific society, is launching the American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT), the first organization of its kind in the U.S. The association is scheduled to begin operations in September 2014, and will be dedicated to improving chemistry education and providing specialized resources to more than a million K-12 chemistry and physical science teachers nationwide. The AACT website, http://www.acs.org/aact, is live, and interested teachers may sign up there to receive email updates about the organization. Chemistry is the only scientific field without a discipline-specific teachers association. AACT will provide the resources necessary to motivate and empower K-12 chemistry teachers as they seek to inspire the scientists and scientifically literate citizens of tomorrow. Membership in the new organization will be open to all who are interested in chemistry education. AACT will have three goals: to serve as a trusted source of curricular and pedagogical resources for K-12 chemistry instruction, to provide opportunities for chemistry teachers to network with each other and the broader ACS community, and to disseminate effective teaching and learning practices at the K-12 levels. Opportunities to collaborate with other teachers of chemistry and with ACS members can help reduce the isolation … Continue reading
