JoVE expands scientific video publication into chemistry

Posted: Published on February 5th, 2013

Public release date: 4-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Neal Moawed press@jove.com 617-245-0137 The Journal of Visualized Experiments February 4, 2013 Cambridge, MA: On Monday, February 4, 2013, JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) will launch the first scholarly scientific video publication for chemistry. Following its successful introduction of video publications for the biological and physical sciences, JoVE received numerous requests for a chemistry counterpart. In response, the journal is launching a new section, JoVE Chemistry, dedicated to visualized publication of experiments across different areas of chemistry research including organic chemistry, chemical biology, electrochemistry, and polymer chemistry, among others. "Similar to research in biology and physics, experimental research in chemistry suffers from a lack of reproducibility that can be solved by visualized publication. Therefore, it is natural to expand JoVE's novel publication approach to chemistry as well", says Moshe Pritsker, the CEO and co-founder of JoVE. The debut article in JoVE Chemistry features a novel experimental approach to investigate antifreeze proteins using a device known as the nanoliter osmometer. This video article was filmed at the laboratory of Dr. Ido Braslavsky at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. Explaining the function of antifreeze proteins, Dr. Braslavsky says: "When … Continue reading

Ayrshire news: Student lands top chemistry award

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

Feb 1 2013 by Stuart Wilson, Ayrshire Post A student who scored 100 per cent in an exam has landed a national award. Rachel Doyle has been honoured by the Royal Society of Chemistry for her stunning performance. The Ayr girl soared to success while sitting her final tests at Wellington school. She left for St Andrews University after bagging A grades at Advanced Higher in Chemistry, Physics and Maths. And she was back in Ayr to receive her award and to speak to pupils at a special assembly. She said: I am still surprised at receiving the award from the Royal Society of Chemistry, something which I never expected would happen to me. It was, however, very exciting and has helped make up for dragging my parents to the local beaches to collect freezing cold seawater. Winning the award has also helped confirm that following a career path in chemistry is something I genuinely want to do. Speaking to other students at university who sat A-levels or went to school in America, they dont get this hands-on experience so it is something not to take for granted whilst at school. Broncos looking to find proper balance of talent and chemistry

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

Broncos executive VP of football operations John Elway (Denver Post file) Today's question about the Broncos comes from Dan in St. Louis. To submit a question for consideration, send an e-mail to The Denver Post's Jeff Legwold. Q: In light of the Broncos' epic fail at season's end, can we finally say locker room chemistry is overrated? The game isn't played in the locker room, it's played on the field. And on the field the Broncos were ultra-conservative and, at times, brain-locked. A: Dan, chemistry is not overrated, but there is a talent level that has to be reached along with it for success to come. Teams with locker rooms full of me-first guys who don't put in the time or effort, no matter their talent level, won't accomplish anything. And having seen a team or two with those qualities I once saw two players fight, during a game, over a spot on a heated bench in a season that was already spiraling into oblivion it is never pretty. A talented team with no work ethic won't accomplish much either. Talent is often the most wasted commodity in the NFL. There are plenty of teams, and individuals, that don't reach … Continue reading

VeruTEK Reports Very High Increases In Heavy Oil Production Using ProBoost Enhanced Oil Recovery Chemistry

Posted: Published on January 15th, 2013

DALLAS & BLOOMFIELD, Conn. & TRINIDAD--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- VeruTEK Technologies, Inc., a developer of high performance chemical solutions for a range of applications including improved oil & gas production, reported substantial oil production gains using VeruTEK ProBoost chemistry in heavy oil deposits in the Southern Venezuelan Basin on the island of Trinidad and in the McClouth formation in Kansas. The Trinidad production gains are documented in a case study just released by VeruTEK and available for review: Trinidad Case Study. ProBoost has been used in over 20 oil fields and 12 formations in the U.S. and abroad since its introduction in late 2011. Over 60% of all oil resources worldwide are heavy oil, but currently only five percent of the worlds heavy oil is being produced due to production challenges. In a Trinidad field operated by Houston-based New Horizons Exploration, Inc., VeruTEK ProBoost chemistry injected in combination with a low-cost sand frac increased oil production over 700% and significantly decreased oil viscosity. Productivity gains continue 10 months after initial treatment. ProBoost has great potential to improve heavy oil recovery. Our return on investment in the first 10 months has been over 750%, said Greg Boyles, CEO of New Horizons. The results … Continue reading
