PHILADELPHIA -- The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will recognize Philip S. Low, PhD, with the ninth annual AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry in Cancer Research at the AACR Annual Meeting 2015, to be held in Philadelphia, April 18-22. Low is the Ralph C. Corley distinguished professor of chemistry and director of the Center for Drug Discovery at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He is also a founder and chief science officer of two biopharmaceutical companies, Endocyte, Inc. and On Target Laboratories LLC. He will present his award lecture, "Ligand-targeted Imaging and Therapeutic Agents for Cancer," Tuesday, April 21, 3 p.m. ET, in the Terrace Ballroom II/III of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The AACR and its Chemistry in Cancer Research Working Group established the AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry in Cancer Research in 2007 to recognize the importance of chemistry to advancements in cancer research. But thats not stopping him from wanting to guide future college students through some of the most difficult scientific courses. With every tap of his walking stick, Wedler uses sound to navigate his way to his chemistry lab at UC Davis. I dont have to see things to really put them in my minds eye, he said. In fact ive never seen things in my eyes. I always visualize things. And with the help of a 3-D printer, he can use his sense of touch to teach himself about molecules. Your fingertips I dont think are any more sensitive than mine, just like your hearing isnt more sensitive than mine, he said. Ive just been trained to use it more than you have, because you rely on your vision for, studies say about 85 percent to 90 percent of your information input. Those are the three qualities that go into making an NBA champion, and more often than not, the team that can best harness all three at once is the one that will take home the Larry OBrien Trophy. The Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers have had those aspirations since this summer, but the roadblocks theyve met along the way have been different. Its never been about talent for either team. The Cavs and Bulls both have that in abundance. Clevelands big three of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love ison paper, at leastas fearsome as any group in the league. The Bulls came into the season with a finally healthy Derrick Rose, the newly acquired Pau Gasol and a solid core of returning veterans like Taj Gibson, Joakim Noah and Jimmy Butler.
