American Chemistry Council: UN Commission Takes Appropriate Steps on BDO and GBL
Posted: Published on March 14th, 2015
WASHINGTON, March 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Today members of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs unanimously rejected the recommendation from the World Health Organization to list 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) as Schedule I substances under the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. In response to these developments, the American Chemistry Council released the following statement. "The UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs has unanimously rejected the recommendation from the WHO to list the industrial chemicals GBL and BDO as Schedule I substances under the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. In fact, the 53 delegates unanimously agreed to not even bring the matter to a formal vote. As the delegates noted, such a classification would have severe economic consequences, disrupt many crucial industries, and affect country development agendas across the global economy. "We support this decision in recognition of the strong product stewardship initiatives and controls that ACC member companies already have in place for these substances." http://www.americanchemistry.com/newsroom The American Chemistry Council (ACC) represents the leading companies engaged in the business of chemistry. ACC members apply the science of chemistry to make innovative products and services that make people's lives better, healthier and safer. ACC is committed to improved environmental, health and safety … Continue reading

Chemistry experiment: Does bonding matter?
Posted: Published on March 13th, 2015
"One of the qualities of every good team is character, and chemistry is a big part of that. You want to keep it as long as you can." Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon, based in part on his experiences as a player, is skeptical of how vital healthy clubhouse chemistry is in a team's performance. "When you win," McClendon said, grinning, "you have great chemistry. I played on teams that had players that didn't get along well at all, but they won." Beltre, Choo and Beimel on Rangers' team chemistry Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre, left fielder Shin-Soo Choo and pitcher Joe Beimel talk about the chemistry developing in camp First-year Rangers manager Jeff Banister is leaning on his great third baseman, Adrian Beltre, to help build a working environment resulting in positive clubhouse chemistry. "To be able to walk into a big league clubhouse for the first time as a manager and have a guy like Beltre there, the kind of leader he is, makes a huge difference," Banister said. "He'll take younger guys and shape and mold how they approach the game. That is so important, having a guy like that the young guys can look up to and … Continue reading

Burke, M.D., Ph.D., professor of chemistry, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Early Career Scientist of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The paper in the journal Science, titled "Synthesis of many different types of small molecules using one automated process," demonstrates the automation and robust application of a unified "building blocks" approach for synthesizing multiple classes of complex natural chemicals that could be valuable backbones for new medicines. REVOLUTION Medicines, which announced its launch in February 2015, is building its industrial-scale REVBLOCKS drug discovery platform based on these methods under an exclusive license from the University of Illinois encompassing an extensive patent estate. Results announced today and featured on the cover of Science … Continue reading

Molecule-making machine simplifies complex chemistry
Posted: Published on March 13th, 2015
VIDEO:University of Illinois chemistry professor MartinBurkeexplainsamachinethatcanassemblecomplexsmallmoleculesfromchemicalbuildingblocks.Thiscouldaidinrapiddrugdevelopment.... view more CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- A new molecule-making machine could do for chemistry what 3-D printing did for engineering: Make it fast, flexible and accessible to anyone. Chemists at the University of Illinois, led by chemistry professor and medical doctor Martin D. Burke, built the machine to assemble complex small molecules at the click of a mouse, like a 3-D printer at the molecular level. The automated process has the potential to greatly speed up and enable new drug development and other technologies that rely on small molecules. "We wanted to take a very complex process, chemical synthesis, and make it simple," said Burke, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Scientist. "Simplicity enables automation, which, in turn, can broadly enable discovery and bring the substantial power of making molecules to nonspecialists." The researchers described the technology in a paper featured on the cover of the March 13 issue of Science. "Small molecules" are a specific class of complex, compact chemical structures found throughout nature. They are very important in medicine - most medications available now are small molecules - as well as in biology as probes to uncover the inner workings of cells … Continue reading
