Rochester chemistry teacher voices concerns over possible curriculum changes

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- One local chemistry teacher is voicing his concerns over potential changes to science class requirements within Rochester Public Schools. Chuck Handlon has taught chemistry for more than 30 years and currently teaches at Rochester's Century High School. He opposes recent discussions by the Rochester Public School Board aiming to potentially alter some required science classes for high school students. Instead of requiring biology, chemistry, and physics, the board has discussed requiring students to chose between biology, chemistry, and physics courses. Handlon claims this could potentially violate education statutes. "It's really important that we have a scientifically literate citizens. By reducing the standards, which were put there so that all students have these common experiences, it is going to result in students not being able to understand the science that they will have to be involved with," said Handlon. After Handlon made his public comments Tuesday night, Superintendent Michael Muoz emphasized that he did not believe the changes would violate any requirements currently in place. Chemistry teacher was ‘prepared to murder in Syria’

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

A teacher who was determined to fight in Syria despite desperate pleas from his family is "appalled" at the brutality shown by Islamic State, a judge has been told. Jamshed Javeed - who is facing jail after admitting two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts - said he wanted to go and support the Syrian people in late 2013 and did not then know the truth about Islamic State. Describing his client as a "thoughtful, studious and mild-mannered" teacher, Charles Bott QC said Javeed was "deeply moved" by images of "extreme suffering" of Syrian people at the hands of the Assad regime. "The defendant's position is that he did something that he considered right at the time in very particular circumstances that he would not contemplate doing now," he told a sentencing hearing at Woolwich Crown Court. He said Javeed was "appalled at the indiscriminate brutality" of IS, describing a series of videos showing the murders of Western hostages as "grotesque and barbaric". A chemistry teacher who wanted to travel to Syria to fight with Islamic State was prepared to commit "multiple acts of murder", a court has heard. Jamshed Javeed, 30, who taught children aged … Continue reading

College of Idaho students explore possible medicinal uses of sagebrush

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

College of Idaho chemistry professor Dr. Carolyn Dadabay and her student research team are deconstructing sagebrush leaves from local deserts to look for bioactive chemicals that could inhibit the bodys detoxification system. In short, theyre researching medicinal uses of sagebrush. In the right dose amount, the chemicals could help the human body keep medication in its system for longer periods of time, officials said. One of the biggest problems in developing drugs that work effectively is that your body is very good at getting rid of drugs, Dadabay pointed out. It has different mechanisms for getting rid of foreign compounds, and it uses those mechanisms to get rid of drugs. Then the drugs dont work. Recently, students from the C of I and research partner Boise State University were collecting two types of sagebrush - whats known as basin big sagebrush and low sagebrush. The students snipped off leaves and put them into ziplock bags destined for the lab. While the College of Idaho is running a preclinical study on the compounds found in sagebrush, collaborator and Boise State biology professor Dr. Jennifer Forbey is looking at the ecological side of what compounds attract pygmy rabbits and sage grouse to … Continue reading

NZs largest chemistry school celebrates 100 years

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

The School of Chemical Sciences at the University of Auckland celebrates 100 years this month with a range of public events and lectures. Distinguished visitors for this Centenary event include Nobel Laureate and University of Auckland Hood Fellow Professor Robert H Grubbs, one of the most influential chemists of our time and a pioneer in polymer and applied chemistry. A public lecture by Professor Russell Egdell of the University of Oxford is also part of the celebrations. Professor Egdell is a Professor of Chemistry and a science historian who will give a talk on the life and work of Henry Moseley, a brilliant student of New Zealander Earnest Rutherford. Moseley was killed by a sniper at Gallipoli at the age of 27 while acting as Signals Officer for Allied forces at Gallipoli. Moseley is credited with inventing x-ray spectroscopy and the modern form of the periodic table and it is widely accepted that his brilliant work would have eventually seen him win the Nobel Prize. He was nominated but was killed before the prize could be awarded. Professor Terry Collins from the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University and a graduate of the University of Auckland will give a … Continue reading

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) February 28, 2015 Veteran microbiology lab, Nelson Laboratories (http://www.nelsonlabs.com), opened a new dedicated analytical chemistry laboratory this week, in preparation for expanding its in-house service offering to include additional analytical capabilities. This newly renovated space, named Redwood 5, is located across from their main campus, adding an additional 3700 square feet to their already impressive 128,000 square foot facility. Redwood 5 will house three chemistry labs containing a number of different analytical instruments. This expansion will allow Nelson Labs to perform a variety of new analytical chemistry testing procedures including: Todays ribbon cutting ceremony is just the beginning for Nelson Labs expanded analytical offering, said Jeffery Nelson, Nelson Laboratories President/CEO. The first piece of new equipment, the ICP/MS, has been installed and is being validated; it will be ready for use in the coming months. We will be adding more instruments throughout the year and each will undergo our rigorous validation process. We anticipate that well be able to provide full materials characterization services by year end. We know our customers need this service to support their product submissions, so were excited to be adding it with a full good laboratory practice (GLP) option under … Continue reading
