Vestal High School Students Put Together Chemistry Magic Show

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Some high school kids are putting a spin on learning chemistry. Vestal High School puts on a chemistry magic show four times during the school year for students in African Road, Clayton, Vestal Hills and Tioga Hills Elementary schools. The show is not your average chemistry lesson. It's Elizabeth Dobell's last year participating in the Vestal High School's chemistry magic show. "I remember when i was in elementary school and coming and seeing the show and so now to be a apart of it...it's all about encouraging younger students to be excited about science and that it's not all facts and numbers and everything but it can be really exciting so the whole thing is its not really magic it's chemistry," said Dobell. All chemistry students are required to take safety certification training courses prior to preparing for the show. The show includes music, dancing, and some pretty impressive tricks. "I like when they lit their hands on fire because I thought it was cool that they could lit their hands on fire but it went out before it touched their hand," said 4th grade elementary school student Jeremy Sager. Students performed a little trick called Methane Mamba. "We dip … Continue reading

By Jason Lanning, Reporter Last Updated: Thursday, February 26, 2015, 8:12 AM TRINITY -- Mitchell High School in Trinity will be in session Thursday despite a chemistry lab fire Wednesday night. Some classrooms will not be used today as teachers utilize a modified campus. Firefighters responded to the call, which came in at 7:28 p.m. When they arrived, they found the fire in the science and technology building on the school's campus, which is located at 2323 Little Road. Crews had the fire knocked down about 15 minutes after they arrived. Officials said the fire was contained to a chemistry lab, but smoke did get into about a dozen classrooms. The lab was heavily damaged. The rooms were aired out overnight. No one was in the lab at the time of the fire and so far, investigators have not determined how the fire started, or if any chemicals or student projects in the lab are to blame. There were no injuries. School officials have not released a damage estimate as of yet. There is no word when repairs will be made. Retired Sioux City chemistry professor unveils flavor-changing beverage

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2015

SIOUX CITY | A retired chemistry professor from Sioux City has developed a new beverage technology that allows consumers to change the flavor of a drink with each sip. Larry Martin demonstrated his patent-pending product, called Shaka, at the Journal offices Tuesday. He poured small packets of chocolate- and strawberry-flavored Shaka milk into a glass of low-fat white milk. The three flavors didn't dissolve, but remained separate from each other, with a horizontal stack of solid bands of white, chocolate and strawberry. Martin then shook the liquid. The flavors didn't blend together, but the movement formed tiny balls, or globules, of various sizes and colors floating around the glass, similar to the appearance of a lava lamp. The name Shaka, pronounced (Shey-KA), refers to how users can easily change the drink to their liking. The more you shake, the more numerous and smaller the globules become. "If you want to taste big flavor bursts that fill your mouth with cherry or fill your mouth with chocolate, you just shake a little bit before you drink it," said Dick Herschaer, Martin's assistant. "If you want more of a homogenized flavor, then you shake it more and the flavors are distributed more … Continue reading

Indian-American Professor Gets Top U.S. Chemistry Award

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2015

NEW YORK: Purnendu Dasgupta, a Jenkins Garrett professor of chemistry at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been awarded the 2015 American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry J. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence in Education. The national award recognises a scientist, who has enhanced the professional development of analytical chemistry students, developed and published innovative experiments, designed and improved equipment or teaching labs and published influential textbooks or significant articles on teaching analytical chemistry. "I am especially honoured by this award. I have been recognised for some research accomplishments or other in the past but this one recognises for the first time my commitment to and love for teaching and that is why it is so gratifying," Dasgupta said. "I am a third generation university teacher. So, much of this honour I can credit to my father and grandfather, I am merely carrying on that tradition," he added. As the recipient of the award, Dasgupta will receive a plaque and cash prize. He will also attend the ACS national conference in August in Boston, where he will address and participate in an awards symposium on education in analytical chemistry. UT Arlington President Vistasp M. Karbhari said Dasgupta's newest … Continue reading
