Risk of Dying Doubled in Wuhan COVID-19 Patients With Hypertension – TCTMD

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2020

New observational data from Wuhan, China, suggest that hypertensive patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had a twofold increased risk of dying compared to those without hypertension, and that not being on medication for hypertension at the time of hospitalization worsens outcomes. The study also provides additional reassurance about the use of antihypertensives that target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Patients with RAAS inhibitors were not exposed to a higher risk of mortality in our study and, after pooling previously published data in a study-level meta-analysis, the use of RAAS inhibitors was shown to be possibly associated with lower risk of mortality, write Chao Gao, MD (Xijing Hospital, Xian, China), and colleagues. Posted: Published on June 6th, 2020

Canagliflozin was not found to be inferior to glimepiride, based on changes in N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels, for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and stable congestive heart failure (CHF), according to study results published in ESC Heart Failure. Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors such as canagliflozin are thought to benefit patients with CHF, but little is known about the impact of these drugs on cardiac biomarkers, including NT-proBNP, in patients with T2DM and CHF.
