DNA origami could lead to nano ‘transformers’ for biomedical applications

COLUMBUS, Ohio--If the new nano-machines built at The Ohio State University look familiar, it's because they were designed with full-size mechanical parts such as hinges and pistons in mind. The project is the first to prove that the same basic design principles that apply to typical full-size machine parts can also be applied to DNA--and can produce complex, controllable components for future nano-robots. In a paper published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ohio State mechanical engineers describe how they used a combination of natural and synthetic DNA in a process called "DNA origami" to build machines that can perform tasks repeatedly. "Nature has produced incredibly complex molecular machines at the nanoscale, and a major goal of bio-nanotechnology is to reproduce their function synthetically," said project leader Carlos Castro, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. "Where most research groups approach this problem from a biomimetic standpoint--mimicking the structure of a biological system--we decided to … Continue reading

The Future of Criminal DNA Collection in 2015

Posted: Published on January 6th, 2015

DNA can reveal an extraordinary amount of private information about you, including familial relationships, medical history, predisposition for disease, and possibly even behavioral tendencies and sexual orientation. While DNA testing in a criminal context has some benefitssuch as supporting innocence claimsthe mass, suspicionless collection, testing, and storing of genetic material from large populations creates a danger for privacy that only grows with each new scientific discovery in the field of genomics. In this post, EFF Senior Staff Attorney Jennifer Lynch discusses state and federal cases that addressed DNA collection in 2014, following the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Maryland v. King. 2014 was a banner year for DNA cases. In the wake of Maryland v. Kingthe 2013 U.S. Supreme Court case upholding warrantless, suspicionless DNA collection from arrestees under Maryland state lawthe constitutionality of DNA collection in the criminal context has continued to present challenging issues for courts. Many of the courts that addressed DNA collection in 2014 followed the Supreme Court's reasoning in King and held that DNA profiling upon arrest is a means of "identification" because it might help law enforcement to learn about a person's past criminal behavior (read what we think of that analysis here). Blood test for prostate cancer investigated

Posted: Published on January 6th, 2015

Vanderbilt University researcher William Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues in Germany and Canada have demonstrated a method for detecting "cell-free" tumor DNA in the bloodstream. Mitchell believes the technique will be transformative in providing improved cancer diagnostics that can both predict treatment outcomes and monitor patient responses to therapy. In a large retrospective study of blood samples, the researchers showed that the method, called a "liquid biopsy," could accurately distinguish prostate cancer from normal controls without prior knowledge of the genetic "signature" of the tumors, and with over three times the sensitivity of current prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. The study appears in the January issue of Clinical Chemistry (volume 61, page 239), which is dedicated to "Molecular Diagnostics: A Revolution in Progress." "Based on the reported data and work in progress, I believe the 'liquid biopsy' will revolutionize cancer diagnostics, not only before a patient begins therapy but also following patient responses to therapy," said Mitchell, the paper's corresponding author and professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. The study collected serum from more than 200 patients with prostate cancer and more than 200 controls. The samples included PSA levels and prostate tissue biopsy grading, called the Gleason score. The researchers … Continue reading
