Son of Koh Tao headman ‘cleared by DNA test’

The institute compared the DNA of Warot Tuwichien to evidence at the scene as well as a DNA sample found on the female tourist's body and reported back to police that it didn't match any of them, a source reported yesterday. Police are now waiting for DNA results from medical teams from Chulalongkorn Hospital, Siriraj Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital, police spokesman Pol Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri said. After receiving all the test results, police would report to a press conference, to be held today , he said. On Thursday, police arranged for the DNA test by medical teams from four institutes on Warot - in front of the media - so as to boost public confidence in the police handling of the case. They were trying to clear public scepticism about their handling of the case amid claims that the two Myanmar men charged with the murders were scapegoats. The High Court at Livingston heard it was 20 million times more likely the DNA came from a combination of Sinclair and his late brother-in-law Gordon Hamilton than from either of them acting alone or from neither of them. On the 13th day of the trial of Sinclair, 69, the jury heard a second full day of detailed evidence from forensic scientist Geraldine Davidson. She took them through DNA evidence found on the clothing of Christine Eadie, who was murdered with her friend Helen Scott in October 1977. They were both 17. In the majority of cases, the samples yielded partial mixed profiles, with Hamilton and Christine herself the major contributors. But components matching the relevant parts of Sinclair's profile were also found in the ligatures used to bind and kill Christine. Ms Davidson told the jury there had been particular interest in the knotted areas of the tights and bra used as ligatures on Christine, as the knots would "preserve" the DNA present at the time they were tied. Scientists can readily obtain extensive genetic information for any plant species of interest, at a relatively low cost, rapidly accelerating the pace of genome sequencing. However, since plant tissues harbor three separate genomes (nuclear, chloroplast, and mitochondrial), it can often be challenging to isolate the particular genome of interest from extracted DNA samples. Sequencing DNA containing all three genomes therefore results in a considerable amount of wasted data, for example, if only the chloroplast genome is desired for the study. Methods exist to isolate particular genomic regions, but each of these has drawbacks. For example, some protocols require extensive lab work, while others (e.g., long-range PCR and hybrid enrichment) require prior knowledge of the genomic regions of interest. A new method by researchers from New England Biolabs and New Mexico State University provides plant biologists with a quick and simple approach for separating plant nuclear DNA from organellar DNA for genomic and metagenomic studies.
