DNA closes violent 2012 Southeast DC rape case
Posted: Published on October 9th, 2014
WASHINGTON - A man serving time for rape in a Maryland prison has been transferred to the District after forensic evidence linked him to another crime. Julius McBride is accused of following a woman out of a store and raping her at gunpoint in the summer of 2012. It is a case that would likely have gone unsolved had it not been for DNA and a computer that discovered the match. The Fort Washington man is facing charges in D.C. in part because a judge in Maryland ordered the 25-year-old to give up a sample of his DNA and it was entered into the state's DNA databank. From there, a computer did the rest of the work and matched evidence taken from the victim. It was early on a Tuesday morning just before 2 a.m. when the victim walked into the Dollar Plus Food Store on Benning Road for a pack of cigarettes. According to a court affidavit, the woman noticed another shopper inside and the two briefly spoke. She gave the man a cigarette before leaving the store and walking down Benning Road. Within seconds, the man came up from behind, pulled a handgun and forced the woman up … Continue reading

Ovarian Cancer DNA Detected in Vaginal Fluid, Researchers Report
Posted: Published on October 9th, 2014
By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, Oct. 7, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers have found it's possible to detect ovarian cancer gene mutations in vaginal fluid samples -- a finding they hope is a step toward an effective screening test for the disease. In a pilot study, researchers were able to detect tumor DNA in tampons from several women with advanced ovarian cancer. It's a "proof of principle" that genetic evidence of the cancer can be uncovered in vaginal samples, they noted. Ovarian cancer is highly treatable if it's caught in the early stages, but most women are diagnosed only after the cancer has advanced. Because of that, only 44 percent of women with the disease survive for five years, according to the American Cancer Society. "Ovarian cancer does cause some symptoms early on. The problem is, they're non-specific," said Dr. Charles Landen, the senior researcher on the new study, which appears in the November issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology. A woman might have abdominal bloating or urinary symptoms, for instance -- but those problems are much more likely to have causes other than ovarian cancer. And right now, there is no effective screening test for the disease. "Ovarian cancer … Continue reading

DNA leads to arrest in 2008 cold case homicide
Posted: Published on October 9th, 2014
Lubbock police have made an arrest in a 2008 cold case. DNA evidence led them to Billy Jack Limbaugh, 43, who is currently charged with attempted aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, and the murder of Monica Isabel Adams. Adams was found dead in a field near north MLK and Bradley in August of 2008. A man checking a pump-jack near Martin Luther King Blvd. and East Bradley discovered Adams' body. On August 20th, 2008, Monica Adams body was found in a field near the area of E. Bradley and N. MLK Boulevard. The preliminary investigation led to the belief she was the victim of an apparent homicide. DNA evidence was collected, and despite an extensive investigation by LPD Homicide and Crime Scene Investigators, the case eventually went cold and the evidence was preserved for future investigation. This past week, the Texas DPS crime lab informed LPD Investigators that a known sample of DNA evidence had been directly linked to Monica Adams' homicide, in what is called a familial DNA hit. This familial DNA hit meant that a close biological relative of a known DNA provider would be the person whose DNA was found at Monica Adams' crime scene. The case … Continue reading

DNA nano-foundries cast custom-shaped metal nanoparticles
Posted: Published on October 9th, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 9-Oct-2014 Contact: Kat McAlpine katherine.mcalpine@wyss.harvard.edu 617-432-8266 Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard @wyssinstitute Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have unveiled a new method to form tiny 3D metal nanoparticles in prescribed shapes and dimensions using DNA, Nature's building block, as a construction mold. The ability to mold inorganic nanoparticles out of materials such as gold and silver in precisely designed 3D shapes is a significant breakthrough that has the potential to advance laser technology, microscopy, solar cells, electronics, environmental testing, disease detection and more. "We built tiny foundries made of stiff DNA to fabricate metal nanoparticles in exact three-dimensional shapes that we digitally planned and designed," said Peng Yin, senior author of the paper, Wyss core faculty member and Assistant Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. The Wyss team's findings, described in a paper titled "Casting Inorganic Structures with DNA Molds," were published today in Science. The work was done in collaboration with MIT's Laboratory for Computational Biology and Biophysics, led by Mark Bathe, senior co-author of the paper. "The paper's findings describe a significant advance in DNA nanotechnology as well as in inorganic nanoparticle synthesis," … Continue reading

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 09, 2014 More than 34.9% or 78.6 million of U.S. adults are currently overweight. Millions of people who try exercise programs find that the results dont match the intense efforts they put into getting in shape and because of this missing link, DNA Spectrum is now offering a DNA Test for a Custom Genetic Exercise Program. Current scientific research indicates that the effectiveness of an exercise routine is strongly linked to a persons genetics. DNA Spectrum has utilized genetic analysis to devise a specialized exercise program tailored to every individuals needs based solely on the genetic relevance and potential for physical activity, metabolism, and muscle physiology. After investing a significant amount of time and research into product development, DNA Spectrum is proud to present myDNA Fitness. How myDNA Fitness Can Help You This innovative new product has the potential to revolutionize the way people exercise, lose weight, burn fat, and build muscle. The process starts with the collection of DNA. A simple cheek swab allows lab technicians to access enough genetic material to run an analysis and begin the process of understanding how bodies are physically programmed. Everyone responds differently to physical activity and this … Continue reading
