Published: Friday, 9/26/2014 BY JENNIFER FEEHAN BLADE STAFF WRITER When Andrew Gustafson was indicted last year for the 1983 slaying of a Whitehouse woman, the charges rested squarely on DNA evidence linking Mr. Gustafson to the crime. This week, prosecutors sought to clear up any possible legal problems with the DNA sample obtained from Mr. Gustafson in 2007. The sample was taken without a search warrant in connection with an unrelated sexual assault investigation and stored for more than three years in the desk drawer of now-retired Lucas County sheriffs Detective Cathy Stooksbury. On Monday, prosecutors sought and obtained a search warrant to get a new DNA swab from Mr. Gustafson, 57, of Birch Run, Mich., who is being held in the Lucas County jail on a $1 million bond. He is charged with alternate counts of aggravated murder and one count of murder in the death of Janean Brown, 19, whose body was found Nov. 19, 1983, in a ditch near Mr. Gustafsons home. Nearly two weeks since the gruesome murders of two British backpackers on Koh Tao, the killers are still at large. Worse still, police have pinned all their hopes on the DNA test results of samples they have collected from almost everybody on Koh Tao, to see if they match those found on the victims. Police yesterday intensified their interviews with people on Koh Tao, off Surat Thani province, in a bid to learn about the last hours before the killings. For now, police believe the murders were sexually motivated, as none of the victims' belongings were missing, Pol General Kiattipong Kaosam-ang, a provincial police commander, said yesterday. "The motivation for the attack is rape, because we found the belongings intact on the victims' bodies," he said. Referring to a cigarette butt found near the bodies of the victims, Kiattipong said the attackers might have been smoking when the victims walked by. The attackers, who probably used drugs, then followed them, raped the woman and killed the man. He said about 50 per cent of the investigation had been completed. ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI Researchers have developed a new way of diagnosing tuberculosis. The new DNA-based test has advantages over 19th century diagnostic methods that are still in use. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that is especially common in low- and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization says it kills more than a million people a year. The diagnosis of tuberculosis hasnt changed much since the 1880s. A sputum specimen coughed up by the patient is examined under a microscope, and suspected TB bacteria is grown in the laboratory. Its a time-consuming process, taking several weeks or more. Now, Professor Mark Pallen from Britains University of Warwick describes a new process that can shorten the time dramatically by identifying strands of tuberculosis DNA in a sputum sample. Were talking about three days to go from getting the sputum sample, getting the DNA out of it, and then getting the sequence sorted. Thats the kind of measure that were looking at, said Pallen. And that speed is important because the sooner you have a diagnosis, the sooner you can start treatment. The results of key DNA evidence was revealed in the David Dooley trial as forensic experts testified about what they found in samples from under the victims fingernails and on her arms. Forensic biologist John Clemmons Jr., who examined the evidence, testified there was DNA that didnt belong to the victim found in one place on her arms among more than a dozen areas tested. Foreign DNA was found at one of the 15 locations, Clemmons said. Because it is one location it is too limited for us to do any type of interpretation with. Watch this story It couldnt link Dooley to the crime and Dooleys DNA could not be identified in the samples taken from the fingernails either, authorities said. In all, five different forensic experts were called by prosecutors, including one who analyzed tool marks found on a door that was pried open at the murder scene. None of them could definitively link Dooley to the crime. Dooley is accused of killing Michelle Mockbee on May 29, 2012, at the Thermo Fischer Scientific plant where he worked as a janitor and she worked in the offices.
