THE BLADE/JETTA FRASER Enlarge | Buy This Photo Published: Tuesday, 8/19/2014 - Updated: 51 seconds ago BY JENNIFER FEEHAN BLADE STAFF WRITER The DNA sample that allegedly links a former Swanton Township man to the 1983 murder of Janean Brown was obtained in 2007 without a warrant by detectives who were investigating an unrelated sexual assault at the time, defense attorneys argued Monday. Andrew Gustafson, 57, of Birch Run, Mich., is asking Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gary Cook to suppress the DNA evidence as well as statements he made to investigators in 1983 and in 2013 about the slaying of Ms. Brown, 19, of Whitehouse. Mr. Gustafson is charged with two counts of aggravated murder and one count of murder in the death of Ms. Brown, whose body was found Nov. 19, 1983 in a ditch near Mr. Gustafsons home. Her throat had been cut. In court Monday, retired Lucas County Sheriffs Det. Sgt. Daryll Symington recalled interviewing Mr. Gustafson at his home the day after Ms. Browns remains were found along Archbold-Whitehouse Road, saying Mr. Gustafson was not a suspect at that time … Continue reading

Police arrest a man in Riverwood for the alleged abductions and sexual assaults of five girls in Sydney more than 20 years ago. Photo: Supplied An alleged child molester will appear in court after his DNA was linked to the violent abduction and sexual assault of five girls in Sydney more than 20 years ago. Police will allege the 44-year-old man sexually assaulted the victims, some at knifepoint, between August 1989 and September 1991. Detectives arrested the man at Riverwood on Monday and charged him with 19 offences. Sex crime squad detectives said eachcase was thoroughlyinvestigated but forensic andinvestigativelimitation at the time meant no one was charged. Advertisement It was not until 2011 that police were able to establish a clear DNA link between all five sexual assaults. It will be alleged the man assaulted the girls, aged between nine and 17, after finding them on isolated streets or bike tracks in Bankstown, South Strathfield, Punchbowl and Artarmon. Police will allege the first victim, aged nine, was grabbed on a Bankstown street and dragged to a nearby derelict house where she was sexually assaulted in August1989. About five months later, a girl, 12, was approached on a bike track at … Continue reading

DNA modification linked to Alzheimer’s disease
Posted: Published on August 18th, 2014
Published 17 August 2014 Markers added to DNA around the ANK1 gene could be linked to brain changes in Alzheimer's disease, according to new research published in Nature Neuroscience today (Sunday 17 August 2014). Two studies, one led by academics at the University of Exeter, looked at chemical markers on the DNA in the post-mortem brains of approximately 1,200 people who had died with dementia. In areas of the brain affected by Alzheimer's disease, the DNA contained a different pattern of marks than in areas of the brain that were not affected. These epigenetic changes represent a mechanism where environmental factors can influence the expression of nearby genes. In the study led by Exeter University, DNA marks around the ANK1 gene were most strongly correlated with advancing stages of the disease. Dr Clare Walton, Research Communications Manager at Alzheimer's Society said: 'Dementia is the most feared condition in people over 55. Despite an increase in public awareness scientists still don't know enough about the intricate processes which cause Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. Epigenetics is an exciting field of research that can help us to understand how the environment and our genes interact in the development of … Continue reading

August 17, 2014 Image Caption: Illinois researchers found that the material molybdenum disulfide could be the most efficient yet found for DNA sequencing, making personalized medicine more accessible. Pictured, from left, are Amir Barati Farimani, Kyoungmin Min and professor Narayana Aluru. Credit: L. Brian Stauffer Liz Ahlberg, Physical Sciences Editor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Gene-based personalized medicine has many possibilities for diagnosis and targeted therapy, but one big bottleneck: the expensive and time-consuming DNA-sequencing process. Now, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found that nanopores in the material molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) could sequence DNA more accurately, quickly and inexpensively than anything yet available. One of the big areas in science is to sequence the human genome for under $1,000, the genome-at-home, said Narayana Aluru, a professor of mechanical science and engineering at the U. of I. who led the study. There is now a hunt to find the right material. Weve used MoS2 for other problems, and we thought, why dont we try it and see how it does for DNA sequencing? As it turns out, MoS2 outperforms all other materials used for nanopore DNA sequencing even graphene. A nanopore is a very tiny hole drilled … Continue reading

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 17-Aug-2014 Contact: Marjorie Montemayor-Quellenberg mmontemayor-quellenberg@partners.org 617-534-6383 Brigham and Women's Hospital Boston, MA A new study led by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Rush University Medical Center, reveals how early changes in brain DNA methylation are involved in Alzheimer's disease. DNA methylation is a biochemical alteration of the building blocks of DNA and is one of the markers that indicate whether the DNA is open and biologically active in a given region of the human genome. The study is published online August 17, 2014 in Nature Neuroscience. According to the researchers, this is the first large-scale study employing epigenome-wide association (EWAS) studieswhich look at chromosomal make-up and changesin relation to the brain and Alzheimer's disease. "Our study approach may help us to better understand the biological impact of environmental risk factors and life experiences on Alzheimer's disease," said Philip L. De Jager, MD, PhD, Program in Translational Neuropsychiatric Genomics, BWH Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry, lead study author. "There are certain advantages to studying the epigenome, or the chemical changes that occur in DNA. The epigenome is malleable and may harbor traces of life events that influence disease susceptibility, such as smoking, depression and menopause, … Continue reading

Rattled by the series of reports in dna on red tape and graft in the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco), the body's managing director, Sanjay Bhatia, has launched a crackdown on corruption in the estate department that handles cases pertaining to deemed conveyance. Bhatia, an IAS officer, has suspended two unscrupulous staffers from the estate department and initiated criminal proceedings against them. He has also issued a stern warning, asking others to fall in line, failing which they will also meet a similar fate. "We have taken note of the series of reports in dna of Navi Mumbai about the estate department and have taken corrective measures," said Bhatia. In his bid to weed out malpractice in the department, Bhatia has ordered opening of a Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC) from August 19, where applicants can pay the requisite fee and collect their documents at the given time. The CFC will leave no scope for any direct interaction between the public and Cidco officials. "Now, the residents won't have to go from table to table to get their work done. They just have to submit their file at the CFC counter," said Mohan Ninawe, public relations officer of the government … Continue reading

This Smartphone-Connected Device Will One Day Quickly Detect Your STDs

The doctor suspects you have Lyme disease, but the time it would take to get blood-test results back from the lab might be time better spent taking antibiotics. A suspicious powder shows up on the doorstep of a government office, and it needs to be identified immediately. A team of investigators is having a tough time determining a victim's time of death at a crime scene. These are all possible future applications for Biomeme's smartphone-connected mobile DNA lab. Biomeme, a company that launched two years ago, has a 10-person team working out of Philadelphia on giving the capabilities of full molecular diagnostics central lab to anyone, according to co-founder Max Perelman. The company has created a mobile version of a real-time qPCR thermocycler, a fancy lab gadget that amplifies small amounts of DNA so they become more detectable ("Like a targeted photocopy machine for DNA," says Perelman). Putting those chunks of DNA through a PCR machine can detect specific things based on their DNA signature. Biomeme's first internally developed test, for example, looks for the DNA signatures of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. "We can make a diagnosis in real-time on the phone," says Perelman. The key to Biomeme's technology is … Continue reading
