Lauderhill police solve crime using DNA testing

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

Police generally do not use DNA evidence to solve robberies, but the sight of a 92-year-old woman lying unconscious in a pool of blood was enough for Lauderhill's Strategic Enforcement Team (SET) to go all out to catch the culprit. "The homeowner, who happened to be a 92-year-old woman, walked in when the burglary was in progress," Police Chief Andrew Smalling said. "On seeing her, the man took a golf club and hit her on the head many times. When our patrol officers came, she was unconscious." Within minutes of the patrol officers arriving on the scene, the SET members had sprung into action. "It was because of the heinous nature of the crime that we decided to use DNA technology," Smalling said. "We wanted the criminal off the streets." The incident happened in May. After conducting a crime-scene analysis of the robbery, talking to neighbors and collecting DNA evidence, the SET sent the evidence for testing. After a two-week wait, they received a response. Within hours, they had their man. Police officers generally shy away from the limelight, but Smalling wasn't going to let his ace team do that this time. At a recent City Commission meeting, city officials … Continue reading

Terahertz Chip Identifies Short Strands of DNA

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

Take a short, single strand of DNA, zap it with terahertz waves and watch how it vibrates. Voila, a machine that can detect DNA sequences. One of the more significant practical challenges currently occupying molecular biologists is to find better ways of identifying short strands of DNA. Called oligonucleotides, these strands of nucleotides are hugely useful in processes such as genetic testing, forensics and DNA amplification. But identifying the strands is a somewhat laboured business. Almost every detection method relies on fluorescent dyes and markers that can be picked up by optical sensors providing a useful but indirect indication of the molecules that are present. But molecular biologists would like a better system that measures the characteristics of the molecules involved and so provides direct evidence of the sequence of nucleotides. Indeed, various research teams are working on such systems, some with significant success. Today, Andrey Chernev at St Petersburg Academic University in Russia and a few pals say they have invented an entirely new way of identifying oligonucleotides using terahertz radiation. Our results demonstrate a new method for label-free, real-time oligonucleotide characterisation, they say. An oligonucleotide is a short single-stranded DNA or RNA molecule usually consisting of fewer than … Continue reading

Marijuanas Buzzkill DNA: Biotech Researcher Finds Medical Pot Laced With Feces

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

Months after her biotechnology company sold for $40million, Jessica Tonani is on Seattles Highway 99, where Kurt Cobain in his final days shot heroin in cheap motels. Shes scoring a gram of Blueberry Kush. Tonani doesnt plan to smoke the pot. Her typical procedure is to isolate some of its DNA and bank it, sequence its genetic profile, and test it for bacteria. After her stop at Choice Wellness, a medical marijuana store in one of the states wherepot is newlylegal, she buys the same strain in three more places (often collecting a new-patient gift of pot-infused gummi bears or goldfish). The goal for her new company, Verda Bio, is to build a database bringing order to billions of potential DNA combinations and, eventually, create stable strains that people can grow like a Red Delicious apple. Right now, Tonani says, people using pot for health conditionslegal in 23 U.S. statesare doing the equivalent of rummaging through their medicine cabinet blindfolded. One day they might get Tylenol; another, mouthwash. Even when they buy the same strain from the same place, it might not have the same effect because of differences in how each plant is grown. The variety Harlequin, for example, … Continue reading

Structure of molecular machine that targets viral DNA for destruction determined

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

With a featured publication in the Aug. 7 issue of Science, Montana State University researchers have made a significant contribution to the understanding of a new field of DNA research, with the acronym CRISPR, that holds enormous promise for fighting infectious diseases and genetic disorders. The MSU-led research provides the first detailed blueprint of a multi-subunit "molecular machinery" that bacteria use to detect and destroy invading viruses. "We generally think of bacteria as making us sick, but rarely do we consider what happens when the bacteria themselves get sick. Viruses that infect bacteria are the most abundant biological agents on the planet, outnumbering their bacterial hosts 10 to 1," said Blake Wiedenheft, senior author of the paper and assistant professor in MSU's Department of Microbiology and Immunology. "Bacteria have evolved sophisticated immune systems to fend off viruses. We now have a precise molecular blueprint of a surveillance machine that is critical for viral defense," Wiedenheft said. These immune systems rely on a repetitive piece of DNA in the bacterial genome called a CRISPR. CRISPR is an acronym that stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. These repetitive elements maintain a molecular memory of viral infection by inserting short segments … Continue reading

dna impact: Help pours in for handicapped badminton player

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

Following a dna report in June on the financial hardships of a handicapped badminton player, two corporate groups have come forward to support him. Standing not-too-tall at 4 feet, but nevertheless with a high stature in the world of badminton, Mark Dharmai is now earing up to participate in a national championship in Bangalore in mid-September. Who are the good samaritans? Two private companies crowdfunding platform Catapooolt and communications firm MSL Group have said that they will sponsor Dharmai, the Bandra-based player who participated in the prestigious All-England Badminton tournament despite his poor financial condition. Both the companies have said that they will pool in resources to fund Dharmai's training, travel, accommodation and miscellaneous costs. How is it helping Dharmai? "I am now able to practice longer and better due to the professional coaches who are guiding me now," said Dharmai, who has been spending more than seven hours a day on the court these days. "After dna reported about me, I was approached by Catapooolt and MSL Group, who are helping me. The financial backing will help me focus on my game and prepare for next year's world tournament rather than worrying about money. dna has done a great … Continue reading
