DNA may hold clue to why we choose the friends we do
Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014
NEW YORK You may be more similar to your friends than you think: A study suggests that the DNA code tends to be more alike between friends than between strangers. Thats beyond the effect of shared ethnicity, researchers say. And it could be important for theories about human evolution, says James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego. He and Yale researcher Nicholas Christakis present their results in a paper released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. How much more alike are friends than strangers? Not much. Imagine the small similarity between fourth cousins, people who share a set of great-great-great grandparents. The study included 1,932 participants in a long-running health study in Framingham, Mass. Researchers knew who was a close friend of whom from the 1970s to the early 2000s because of information gathered for the study. From this group, they identified 1,367 pairs of close friends and about 1.2 million pairs of strangers. Then they examined information about nearly 467,000 locations in the DNA code of each participant. They looked for how similar the friend pairs were, and compared that to how similar the stranger pairs were. The researchers found that genes affecting … Continue reading

DNA Evidence Leads To Suspect Charged In 1982 Norman Rape Case
Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014
OKLAHOMA CITY - A new suspect is identified in a 1982 rape case after another man was wrongfully convicted. Thomas Webb spent more than 13 years in prison before being released in 1996. The journalism group Oklahoma Watch pushed for the new DNA testing. The DNA evidence matched Gilbert Duane Harris, 58, of Biloxi, Mississippi to the crime in 2006. It was reported to Oklahoma authorities, but steps were never taken to pursue charges until now. Its a piece of the puzzle that God is revealing of what really happened, said Webb, who spent time for a crime he didnt commit. Webb has been out of prison for a little over 18 years now. They just told me, Mr. Webb, were sorry what happened to you, have a good life, said Webb. More than three decades later, DNA evidence links the crime to another man. Chill bumps came up on me. I just thought, my gosh, said Irven Box, Thomas defense attorney. After all this time, its caught up with this guy. News 9 followed Thomas journey for six years, up until his release from prison. His ex-wife, who he met through a prison ministry, fought to get his DNA … Continue reading

tzi’s non-human DNA: Opportunistic pathogen discovered in Iceman tissue biopsy
Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014
tzi's human genome was decoded from a hip bone sample taken from the 5,300 year old mummy. However the tiny sample weighing no more than 0.1 g provides so much more information. A team of scientists from EURAC in Bolzano/Bozen together with colleagues from the University of Vienna successfully analysed the non-human DNA in the sample. They found evidence for the presence of Treponema denticola, an opportunistic pathogen involved in the development of periodontal disease. Thus, by just looking at the DNA, the researchers could support a CT-based diagnosis made last year which indicated that the Iceman suffered from periodontitis. The results of the current study have recently been published in the online scientific journal PLOS ONE. Much of what we know about tzi -- for example what he looked like or that he suffered from lactose intolerance -- stems from a tiny bone sample which allowed the decoding of his genetic make-up. Now, however, the team of scientists have examined more closely the part of the sample consisting of non-human DNA. "What is new is that we did not carry out a directed DNA analysis but rather investigated the whole spectrum of DNA to better understand which organisms are … Continue reading
