DNA tests confirm father, gender of 7 dead babies in Pleasant Grove home

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014

Pleasant Grove police investigate the scene where seven infant bodies were discovered and packaged in separate containers at a home in Pleasant Grove on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Over a 10-year period, police say Megan Huntsman, 39, gave birth to the infants and then killed six of them them. Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret News PLEASANT GROVE Police say meth use is a possible reason a Utah County mother allegedly killed six newborn babies over 10 years. Pleasant Grove Police Capt. Mike Roberts said Megan Huntsman chose drugs over the children whose bodies were discovered in a Pleasant Grove home in April. A seventh baby, allegedly stillborn, was also found in the home. "During her statement, (Huntsman) admitted that she needed money basically to buy the drugs, she couldn't afford the drugs, and kind of speculated that the babies would be in the way, so to speak, and she couldn't afford the babies and the drugs both, so she had to choose one or the other," Roberts said. Huntsman was "very honest and straightforward" during interviews with police, Roberts said. "There wasn't a lot of remorse," he said. "It was more like a job interview than anything. There was no emotion … Continue reading

Important Clue To Cancer Provided By DNA Origami Nano-tool

July 8, 2014 Image Caption: DNA-origami. Credit: Bjrn Hgberg Karolinska Institutet Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have headed a study that has provided new knowledge about the EphA2 receptor, which is significant in several forms of cancer. This is important knowledge in itself but just as important is how this study, which is published in the highly respected journal Nature Methods today, was conducted. The researchers used the method of DNA origami, in which a DNA molecule is shaped into a nanostructure, and used these structures to test theories about cell signalling. It was previously known that the EphA2 receptor played a part in several forms of cancer, such as breast cancer. The ligand, i.e., the protein that communicates with the receptor, is known as an ephrin molecule. Researchers have had a hypothesis that the distance between different ligands in this case the distance between ephrin molecules affects the level of activity in the communicating receptor of the adjacent cells. The Swedish researchers set out to test this hypothesis. They used DNA building blocks to form a stable rod. This has then been used as a very accurate measure of the distance between molecules. We use DNA as the … Continue reading

DNA from aborted fetus led to arrest in assault on teen

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014

KISSIMMEE DNA from an aborted fetus led to the arrest last weekend of a suspect charged with having sex with a 14-year-old girl he met on Facebook, according to police records. Kevon Butler, 23, was charged over the July Fourth holiday weekend with seducing an impregnating the teen last fall after renting a room for the night at a motel on Vine Street, records state. The girl's parents found about the relationship when Butler's girlfriend called and told them about the underage affair with the convicted cocaine dealer. The teenager later told police she might have had unprotected sex with him, records state. In early November less than a month after she met Butler the teen's father notified police that she was pregnant and that the pregnancy would be terminated within the week at an out-of-town clinic. A detective and a crime scene technician went to the clinic and collected a DNA specimen after the procedure, records show. The specimen was stored in a police evidence freezer at the Kissimmee Police Department as detectives continued to investigate the case. In April, police collected two DNA specimens from Butler and sent all of the specimens to the Florida Department of Law … Continue reading

Identities of 18 Uttarakhand tragedy victims established

Posted: Published on July 7th, 2014

The results of DNA profiling of the 2013 deluge victims have begun to show results with 18 bodies being identified via DNA matching, the State Police Department data revealed on Monday. According to the State Police Department, 18 of the 191 DNA samples received have been matched. However, identification of deluge victims and search for corpses of those who went missing in the 2013 deluge continues even a year after the deluge. Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) CID G S Martolia who is also the head of the Special Task Force constituted to trace the bodies in the Kedar Valley said, The kin of only 191 victims approached the State Police with the DNA samples for the purpose of identification of the bodies". Now that the process of identification via DNA sampling and matching has begun to show results we expect more people to approach us with the DNA samples so that more bodies can be identified, Mr. Martolia said. A total of the 630 bodies have been found in the deluge-hit areas of the State, including the Kedar Valley. The DNA samples of the bodies have been sent to the Hyderabad-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD). Rudraprayag … Continue reading
