‘Bigfoot’ hair samples undergo DNA analysis: Big mammals, yes. Bigfoot, no.
Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014
A new genetic analysis has found no evidence for a cryptic humanlike primate known as Bigfoot or the Yeti. Hair samples from creatures claimed to beBigfootor Sasquatch actually come from cows, horses, dogs and even a few extinct bears. But none seem to come from a completely new primate species, according to a study published today (July 1) in the journal Proceedings of The Royal Society B. Throughout the world, stories abound of a mysterious man-beast covered in shaggy hair, who has eyes, nose and ears like a human, and who walks on two legs. Dubbedthe Yetiin the Himalayas, and Bigfoot or Sasquatch in North America, the creature has been called a hybrid human, an early human such as a Neanderthal or Denisovan or an extinct ape, such asGigantopithecus. Scientists, however, have mostly discountedcases of Bigfoot sightings, saying researchers would have identified such a large and strange creature by now if it were breeding in the wild. And some of the most well-known Bigfoot sightings have turned out to be hoaxes: In 2008, two Georgia men claimed they had photos and the body of a Bigfoot, but the genetic samples came from an opossum and the "body" turned out to … Continue reading

Iowa to expand DNA collection from criminals
Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014
CEDAR RAPIDS | Iowa law enforcement is about to get what Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek calls a valuable and important tool that will help close cases. However, a civil liberties advocate calls the collection of DNA from people who commit relatively low-level crimes invasive, expensive and unnecessary (and) diverts time and money away from more serious cases. Iowa, like several states, collects DNA from felons. In 2013, the Iowa Legislature voted to expand that to adults convicted of most aggravated misdemeanors. The effective date was delayed until this year to allow law enforcement agencies to prepare for implementation. The pending July 1 implementation has re-ignited a debate over how to maintain the proper balance between community safety and constitutional freedoms. That was reflected in the 2013 passage of the bill: 84-15 in the House and 29-20 in the Senate. Opponents to the bill were a collection of some of the Legislatures most liberal and conservative members. Pulkrabek has no qualms about sampling and no doubts about its benefits. When you look at the universe of people who are charged with criminal offenses, if you just look at just the universe of felons, its a small universe, Pulkrabek said. When you … Continue reading

DNA experts testify at Cisneros trial
Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014
MASON CITY | DNA matching a sample from Michael Cisneros was found on a pair of blue pajama bottoms belonging to a Mason City toddler who drowned in Willow Creek 20 years ago, a DNA expert testified Monday in Cisneros' murder trial. Cisneros, 38, formerly of Mason City, is accused of first-degree murder in the July 1994 death of 20-month-old John Snyder Jr. He was reported missing about 8:20 a.m. July 20, 1994, by his father, John Snyder Sr., from their apartment on South Adams Avenue. He was found in the creek on July 21. Several DNA experts with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation crime lab testified Monday as Cisneros murder trial entered its second week. The statistical probability of the DNA profile developed from four blood stains on Little Johns pajama bottoms belonging to someone other than Cisneros is less than 1 in 100 billion people, according to DCI criminalist Tara Scott. Retired criminalist Marie Sides tested the stains on the pajama bottoms in 1994 and discovered the presence of blood, but DNA testing was not being conducted at the lab at that time. By 2002 the technology had evolved to allow Sides to develop DNA profiles for … Continue reading

Is Bigfoot out there? Study analyzing hairs attributed to creature says they’re mostly bears
Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014
LONDON DNA testing is taking a bite out of the Bigfoot legend. After scientists analyzed more than 30 hair samples reportedly left behind by Bigfoot and similar mythical beasts like the Himalayan Yeti, they found all of them came from more mundane creatures like bears, wolves, cows and raccoons. In 2012, researchers at Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology issued an open call asking museums, scientists and Bigfoot aficionados to share any samples they thought were from the legendary ape-like creatures. "I thought there was about a 5 percent chance of finding a sample from a Neanderthal or (a Yeti)," said Bryan Sykes of Oxford University, who led the research, the first peer-reviewed study of Bigfoot, Yeti and other "anomalous primates." Sykes and colleagues tested 36 hair samples from Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Russia and the U.S. using DNA sequencing and all of them matched DNA from known animals. Most were from bears, but there were also hairs from a Malaysian tapir, horses, porcupine, deer, sheep, and a human. While Sykes said they didn't find any proof of Bigfoot-related creatures, he acknowledged their paper doesn't prove they don't exist. "The fact that none of these samples turned out … Continue reading
