Aurora police to make changes to DNA evidence storage, procedures

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014

An independent panel that reviewed the destruction of DNA evidence by the Aurora Police Department has recommended comprehensive changes to how the department handles and stores evidence. The panel was formed after the department last year announced it had improperly destroyed evidence in 48 sexual assault cases. In all, there were 455 cases in which DNA had been potentially or prematurely destroyed. The review, which was made public Thursday, found that in six of the cases "it is possible that charges cannot be brought because of the destruction of evidence." In four of those cases, the DNA evidence was never submitted to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The panel concluded that the mistakes, which happened between 2011 and 2013, were an "oversight due to inadequate staff training, lack of close supervision, and a lack of adherences to protocols ... " Since the announcement last year, interim Police Chief Terry Jones said the department is not destroying any DNA evidence until it can make all the needed changes regarding how it oversees and stores DNA evidence. "We regret that it occurred, and we're taking the steps necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again," Jones said Thursday. A big part of … Continue reading

DNA prompts court to overturn conviction in Hernando death

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014

BROOKSVILLE Newly discovered DNA evidence persuaded the Supreme Court of Florida to overturn the conviction of death-row inmate Paul Christopher Hildwin on Thursday. The Supreme Court remanded the case to the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court, which covers Hernando County. In 1986, a Hernando County jury found Hildwin guilty of the strangulation murder of 42-year-old Vronzettie Cox, whose naked body was found in the trunk of her car the previous year. Cox had also been raped. A majority of the state Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that DNA evidence found on Coxs underwear and a wash cloth belonged to Coxs ex-boyfriend, William Haverty, currently serving a 20-year sentence in Florida on child sex-abuse charges. In its conclusion, justices on the majority said that circumstantial evidence against Hildwin has been entirely discredited and scientific evidence against him was unreliable. Justices Charles T. Canady cast a dissenting opinion with which Justice Ricky Polston agreed. The newly-discovered evidence identifying the donor of the DNA left on (items at the crime scene) changes the entire character of the case originally presented to the jury, the Supreme Court said in concluding statements. The state Attorney Generals Office has 15 days to file for a rehearing with … Continue reading

DNA Love Connection? Test Uses Genetics to Determine Compatibility

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014

With their latest service devoted to helping couples search for their soul mate, a group of scientists say that in the search for compatibility, love is all about DNA compatibility. They call it Instant Chemistry, a company founded by Ron Gonzalez, a psychologist and neuroscientist, and his wife, Sara Seabrooke, a geneticist. They said they were inspired to create Instant Chemistry after seeing how many marriages fail. "If we can help reduce those divorce rates by helping couples learn more about themselves [and] really have that insight that you would take ... 10 to 15 years to get and you could have it today, you can imagine that that could help ease a lot of relationship tensions," Gonzalez said. Tune in for the full story on ABC News' "Nightline Prime," Saturday, June 28, at 10 p.m. ET. The key to Instant Chemistry, they said, is in the DNA. Couples can use a test that looks at genes in the immune system. According to Gonzalez and Seabrooke, the more differences there are between two people's immune systems, the more attractive they'll find each other. "If you have two people come together with very different immune systems and they have a child, … Continue reading

New DNA evidence overturns decades-old death sentence

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014

TALLAHASSEE Supreme Court overturns death sentence on DNA evidence Based on new DNA evidence, the Florida Supreme Court threw out a death sentence for a man convicted nearly three decades ago of the strangulation murder of a Hernando County woman. The court ruled 5-2 on Thursday to vacate the first-degree murder conviction and death sentence of Paul Christopher Hildwin based on newly discovered evidence obtained from DNA testing on a pair of womens underwear and a white washcloth. This new scientific evidence completely discredits the scientific evidence that the state relied upon at trial when the state argued that Hildwins defense was not supported by the evidence, the majority wrote. In fact, exactly the opposite has now been shown to be true - the biological material matches the very person that Hildwin argued at trial was responsible for the murder. Hildwin, now 54, was convicted in 1986 for the September 1985 rape and murder of 42-year-old Vronzettie Cox. Hildwin admitted to stealing a checkbook, ring and radio from Cox but claimed another man, Coxs boyfriend, committed the murder. Recent tests on the underwear and washcloth, found in the vehicle in which Cox was located four days after she was murdered, … Continue reading
