Black market adoptees turn to DNA testing to find families

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2014

McCAYSVILLE, Ga. They were adopted off-the-books decades ago, scattered by a Georgia doctor who took $100 or $1,000 or something in between to send desperate couples home with new sons and daughters. Now some of the adoptees have turned to fresh DNA testing in hopes of reconnecting with the biological families they never knew, before time runs out. This is our shot in the dark, really, said Melinda Elkins Dawson, one of more than 200 newborns relocated to other states from the clinic in McCaysville in the 1950s and 60s. As children, their true ancestry was erased on birth certificates falsely listing adoptive couples as their natural parents. Genetic codes are the only links left. So Dawson worked with Ohio-based DNA Diagnostics Center to arrange free cheek-swab sampling Saturday at a motel in Ducktown, Tennessee, a few miles from where the clinic was located. The adoptees hope potential relatives from the area come forward to give samples, even if they remain anonymous. Were not trying to make anyone look bad, she said. Were just trying to get some answers. Every adopted child has questions. We deserve some answers. The doctor who ran the McCaysville clinic, Thomas Hicks, died in 1972. … Continue reading

Q&A: Billy Glaze case puts DNA analysis in spotlight

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2014

Listen Story audio 5min 48sec Billy GlazeCourtesy of Delaware State Police The Innocence Project petition filed earlier this month for convicted serial killer Billy Glaze to get a new trial relies heavily on newly-analyzed DNA evidence from decades-old crime scenes. But is the science solid? DNA tests show man innocent of 1980s Minn. murders, lawyers say Sophisticated DNA analysis that can identify a person's genetic fingerprint today didn't exist when Glaze went to trial in the late 1980s for the murders of three American Indian women in Minneapolis - Kathleen Bullman, Angeline Whitebird Sweet and Angela Green. Glaze, who was a drifter, became the prime suspect in the serial murders, was arrested and convicted based mostly on witness testimony, but little physical evidence. Hamline University forensic science professor Glenn Hardin says at the time of Glaze's trial DNA analysis was in its infancy. "DNA is important and tells you something," Hardin said. "If the DNA is properly preserved and analyzed it is very accurate." With scientific advancements in DNA testing, the Innocence Project claims to have helped exonerate hundreds of people around the country. In the Glaze case, the Innocence Project had dozens of pieces of evidence from the three … Continue reading

5 Things to Know About Adoptees’ Search Via DNA

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2014

More than 200 newborns in the 1950s and '60s were relocated in off-the-books adoptions through Dr. Thomas Hicks' McCaysville clinic in far northern Georgia. Some of the adoptees, now in their 50s and 60s, are trying again to find blood relatives via fresh DNA testing. That may be their only way of confirming biological links because they have no records of their natural parents, and the doctor died decades ago. The adoptees, who sometimes call themselves "Hicks babies," arranged for Fairfield, Ohio-based DNA Diagnostics Center to conduct free cheek-swab sampling this Saturday at a motel in Ducktown, Tennessee, near McCaysville. A half-dozen or more adoptees are giving samples, and they hope potential relatives from the area participate, too. Here are five things to know: THERE ARE BELIEVED TO BE HUNDREDS OF ADOPTEES FROM HICKS' CLINIC WHO ENDED UP IN VARIOUS STATES. A local probate judge helping a woman search for her birth parents in the late 1990s found records of more than 200 questionable births in roughly a 12-year span. She concluded there was no logical explanation for why so many mothers were listed out-of-state. SOME ADOPTEES HAD DNA TESTING DONE WHEN THAT DISCOVERY WAS MADE. A few connected with … Continue reading
