Methods for storing data in DNA are becoming more feasible, and may now enable the data to survive intact for over a million years. Researchers in Switzerland have recently conducted successful experiments in this field. The idea of storing data in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the natural genetic information storage medium, has been around for a number of years. Scientists have already known for some time that information could be stored in a DNA sequence. Now researchers at the ETH Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland have taken a further step towards achieving uncorrupted data storage for a period approaching eternity. Robert Grass, a lecturer at the ETH Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, and his team set out to test the procedure, basing their research on preserving the information-bearing segments of DNA. The technique used by the ETH scientists to encode and decode data from synthetic DNA In order to do this, they drew some lessons from fossilised bones. While studies of ancient mineral formations contain evidence for the evolution of bacteria from 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago -- just half a billion years after the stabilization of Earth's crust -- what might have preceded the formation of such unicellular organisms is still a mystery. The new findings suggest a novel scenario for the non-biological origins of nucleic acids, which are the building blocks of living organisms, said CU-Boulder physics Professor Noel Clark, a study co-author. Today, Inovio vaccines for treating breast, lung, pancreatic cancer and Hepatitis C are in Phase I clinical testing, and next year its cervical cancer vaccine will begin phase III testing, the final step to FDA approval. Montclair State University scientists have confirmed the jellyfish that washed up on the Jersey Shorelast year were venomous and dangerous sea creatures, reports say. Through DNA testing, scientists have identified the beached crittersas box jellyfish, the Asbury Park Press is reporting, which won't put swimmers in the hospital but aremore dangerous than the average jellyfish at the shore. Experts hope the rare sighting of the species stays rarein New Jersey, according to the report. The analysis showed a 93 to 94 percent match with genus Tamoya -- a jellyfish thatgenerally live in warm coastal waters with venom in its tentacles. SEATTLE (AP) - Frustrated with dog owners who refuse to clean up after their pets, an increasing number of apartments in Seattle are opting to use DNA testing to identify the culprits. The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/1HxGgb2) that a company called BioPet Vet Lab from Knoxville, Tennessee, is providing its PooPrints testing kits to 26 apartment and condo complexes and homeowners associations in the region. Erin Atkinson, property manager at Potala Village Apartments in Everett says the messes are all over. "There was poop inside the elevators, in the carpeted hallways, up on the roof," Atkinson said. "They're lazy, I guess." That's why, since February 2014, tenants have been paying a "one-time fee of $29.95 for DNA testing." BioPet says in the past five years, the DNA test has been used in nearly 1,000 places around the country, and it's especially popular in Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and other large cities. The marketing took a little longer to reach the Northwest, but King-Snohomish-Pierce counties are opportune sites. They are home to about 811,000 dogs.
