Nano-platform ready: Scientists use DNA origami to create 2D structures

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 2-Jun-2014 Contact: James Devitt james.devitt@nyu.edu 212-998-6808 New York University Scientists at New York University and the University of Melbourne have developed a method using DNA origami to turn one-dimensional nano materials into two dimensions. Their breakthrough, published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology, offers the potential to enhance fiber optics and electronic devices by reducing their size and increasing their speed. "We can now take linear nano-materials and direct how they are organized in two dimensions, using a DNA origami platform to create any number of shapes," explains NYU Chemistry Professor Nadrian Seeman, the paper's senior author, who founded and developed the field of DNA nanotechnology, now pursued by laboratories around the globe, three decades ago. Seeman's collaborator, Sally Gras, an associate professor at the University of Melbourne, says, "We brought together two of life's building blocks, DNA and protein, in an exciting new way. We are growing protein fibers within a DNA origami structure." DNA origami employs approximately two hundred short DNA strands to direct longer strands in forming specific shapes. In their work, the scientists sought to create, and then manipulate the shape of, amyloid fibrilsrods of aggregated proteins, or peptides, that … Continue reading

DNA, fingerprints help to put names to Wayne County morgue’s unidentified remains

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

Second of two parts The remains of more than 20 people have been identified at the Wayne County Medical Examiners Office over the past year because of increased efforts to give names to those who are unidentified at the morgue. This includes Bilal Berreni, a 23-year-old French street artist who was killed in July 2013 but not identified until March. Over the past year, the effort to identify remains at the morgue has led to identifications using DNA, fingerprints, dental records and other methods. Several remains were identified after events were held encouraging families of missing people to provide DNA samples. Michigan State Police Detective Trooper Sarah Krebs said that by putting someone behind these cases to be a voice for them, we can bring answers to their families. Berreni was one of those cases. He was shot in the face in July at the Brewster-Douglass housing project on Detroits east side. Police, though, said Berreni had no identification on him when his body was found. His identity was unknown until March. Krebs said she had Berrenis fingerprints run through a national fingerprint database and a hit came back. Police have said there are no arrests in the case, but … Continue reading

Man on trial for 2003 iron bar bashing

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

AAP DNA tests have led to the trial of a man for the 2003 bashing of a South Australian woman. DNA tests have led to the trial of a man more than a decade after an intruder used a metal bar to viciously bash a woman in her kitchen, a jury has been told. The man, whose name is suppressed, has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Nanette Clarke on August 19, 2003, at her home in Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula. Opening the Supreme Court trial on Monday, prosecutor Peter Longson said police did not obtain a sample of the accused man's DNA until 2013. He told the jurors that undoubtedly the question of "Why would he do this?" would crop up in their minds during the trial, but he stressed the crown did not have to prove motive. Ms Clarke lived with her partner, Neil Evans, who went fishing with her son on the evening of the attack. After putting her cocker spaniel, Rusty, in his kennel and getting into bed, she heard a noise in the kitchen. When she investigated, she saw the back of a man who was holding a metal bar. … Continue reading

No Pig DNA Detected In Two Cadbury Products – Jamil Khir

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

Details Published on Monday, 02 June 2014 16:17 KUALA LUMPUR - No pig DNA has been detected in two Cadbury chocolate products, confirmed Minister in the Prime Ministers Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom in a press conference on Monday. The decision was arrived at by the Chemistry Department which had certified both the products, Cadbury Roasted Almond and Cadbury Hazelnut, as free from pig DNA. "The suspension of the halal certificate issued to Cadbury will be discussed and if there are no objections, it will be reissued. However before the certificate is reissued, JAKIM will visit all of Cadburys factories, Jamil said. Apart from the two products, the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) had also conducted tests on four other products in the same processing batch and five samples of raw materials that could potentially contain animal products. The Health Ministry recently detected two samples of the Cadbury chocolate, namely the Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond which contained pig DNA (porcine). The issue first came to light on May 23 which led to a special meeting that was held between the Health Ministry, the Department of Standards and the Chemistry Department the following day. George Church: The Future Without Limit

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

Text by Peter Miller Photographs by Deanne Fitzmaurice In the future, George Church believes, almost everything will be better because of genetics. If you have a medical problem, your doctor will be able to customize a treatment based on your specific DNA pattern. When you fill up your car, you won't be draining the world's dwindling supply of crude oil, because the fuel will come from microbes that have been genetically altered to produce biofuel. When you visit the zoo, you'll be able to take your children to the woolly mammoth or passenger pigeon exhibits, because these animals will no longer be extinct. You'll be able to do these things, that is, if the future turns out the way Church envisions itand he's doing everything he can to see that it does. George McDonald Church is a big man, six feet five inches tall, with a full beard and a deep, reassuring voice. At his lab at Harvard Medical School in Boston, the 59-year-old molecular engineer supervises a team of 90 or so graduate students, postdocs, visiting scientists, and staff as they undertake cutting-edge science. They're manipulating DNA, RNA, and proteinsthe basic tools of the genetics revolutionto accomplish futuristic tasks … Continue reading
