Drop-off boxes get drugs out of the house
Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013
Prescription drug abuse has been classified as an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationwide, approximately 60 percent of teens say that access to prescription drugs is easy via their home medicine cabinets or that of a friend or relative, said Joan Whitney, director of Substance Abuse Prevention for the city of Gloucester. Easy access and low perception of harm by youths creates a recipe for danger for misuse with the possibility of dependency that can lead to addiction. The Drug Enforcement Administration estimates that very day, on average, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. Whitney said prescription drug abuse is not only a community and family concern, but also a concern for prescribers and, ultimately, law enforcement. In 2007, approximately 27,000 overdose deaths occurred in the United States, Whitney said, explaining that equates to one death every 19 minutes. Whitney said the Centers for Disease Control cites two general categories as contributing to problems from use those in need of long-term medical use of opioids and those who report non-medical use. Gloucester, as other communities throughout Massachusetts and the nation, has struggled with effects of prescription drug misuse and abuse, … Continue reading

A court without judgement
Posted: Published on December 31st, 2012
A woman, with drawn cheeks and well into her forties, steps out of the jurors box and takes a seat before Judge William Davis in his Siskiyou County courtroom. She just had a relapse, another hurdle in a life-long struggle with drugs and alcohol that contributed to her sons entrance into foster care six years ago. I have support, the woman says while fidgeting, now seated at a table before the bench. But something is missing here, and I know that. Its not a failure to say that you need something beyond what you are getting, Judge Davis says calmly. That actually takes courage. I dont want to scold or berate you about using. I just want to help you. I know that, the woman says. The jury box is almost full. Ten parents, all to children involved with this countys juvenile dependency system, come here as often as once a week as they fight the substance addictions that contributed to their children entering foster care. In Siskiyou County these proceedings are called Family Dependency Treatment Courts. In other jurisdictions they are called Family Drug Treatment Courts (FTDC), or other variations on the same theme. The prevailing philosophy driving the … Continue reading

Center for drug dependents opens
Posted: Published on December 31st, 2012
THE Center for Health Development (CHD) in Davao Region staged its soft opening of the Outpatient and Aftercare Center for Drug Dependents located inside the Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region compound along J.P. Laurel Ave. Thursday morning. No less than Undersecretary Edgar Galvante of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) and Assistant Secretary Benjamin Reyes graced the inauguration of the P7-million two-storey building. Program manager Rustum Fanugao Jr. said the facility is the first-ever outpatient center for drug dependents in the Philippines. "The purpose of this facility is to cater outpatient drug users who will surrender voluntarily. Most of the patients in the rehabilitation center have been arrested so this facility is built to help drug pushers who will surrender," Fanugao said in the vernacular. Fanugao said the Outpatient and Aftercare Center for Drug Dependents has many support groups composed of different families who have a drug dependent family member who will help in spreading the advocacy of their program. "We are confident that the advocacy of the program will easily be a widespread as the different support groups are very passionate about solving the issue of drugs because they are also suffering from it," he said. Fanugao added … Continue reading

Coram Specialty Infusion Services to Provide Gattex (R) Drug to be Used as Treatment for Short Bowel Syndrome
Posted: Published on December 28th, 2012
DENVER, Dec. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Coram Specialty Infusion Services, a leading national provider of specialty home infusion and specialty pharmaceutical distribution services, has announced that it has become an approved limited distribution provider for NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of Gattex (teduglutide [rDNA origin]) for injection. Gattex is a novel, recombinant analog of human glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2), a peptide involved in normal intestinal function and fluid and nutrient absorption. A New Drug Application for Gattex, for use in treatment of short bowel syndrome (SBS) in adults, was approved on December 21 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The unique mechanism of Gattex would make it the first and only long-term therapy that treats the underlying cause of SBS, a rare disorder in which nutrients are not properly absorbed because a large part of the small intestine is missing or has been surgically removed. Gattex works by helping patients increase their ability to absorb nutrients and fluids. Many SBS patients depend on IV nutrition, also called parenteral nutrition (PN), to meet their nutrition needs, and Gattex can reduce or even eliminate patients' dependence on PN therapy. If approved, Gattex will be available through Coram's network of more than … Continue reading

Eva Rausing Died Of Drugs Dependency
Posted: Published on December 15th, 2012
Multimillionairess Eva Rausing died as a result of dependent drug abuse, an inquest has ruled. The 48-year-old's body lay undiscovered for two months before she was found at the 5m west London home she shared with her husband Hans, heir to the Tetra Pak fortune. She was found in a fly-filled room hidden under a pile of bedding with a foil pipe in her hand, Westminster Coroner's Court heard. Police found the mother-of-four's body in an advanced state of decomposition after they had arrested Hans Rausing on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on July 9. He was given two suspended sentences in August after admitting preventing the lawful and decent burial of his wife's body. A post-mortem found his wife had died on May 7 and had drugs in her system. Toxicology reports showed cocaine, opiates and amphetamines in her blood. She had been fitted with a pacemaker following heart surgery in August 2006, which revealed she had suffered a "non-survivable" heart rhythm on the morning of May 7. Deputy coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe said Mrs Rausing died as a result of cocaine intoxication contributed to by a heart condition - tricuspid valve disease. Delivering … Continue reading

Lundbeck's alcohol dependency drug wins EU green light
Posted: Published on December 15th, 2012
LONDON (Reuters) - A novel drug to fight alcohol dependency was given a green light by European regulators on Friday, providing a boost to Danish drugmaker Lundbeck at a time when its top product faces a big drop in sales. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Friday it recommended approval of Selincro in conjunction with counseling for the reduction of alcohol consumption in adults dependent on drink. Recommendations from the EMA are normally endorsed by the European Commission within two or three months, implying the drug could be launched in Europe early next year. That is good news for Lundbeck, which needs new drugs to replace lost sales from antidepressant Cipralex, sold as Lexapro in the United States and Japan, which is now coming off patent. Alcohol abuse is theoretically a vast market, although it is unclear whether doctors will be ready to prescribe a drug as a treatment and whether Lundbeck has the marketing muscle to make a big impact. Lundbeck Chief Executive Ulf Wiinberg told Reuters last week that Selincro was "a bit of a joker in our portfolio" because of uncertainty as to how it will be used in practice. The drug, which blocks the action … Continue reading

Companies push for random drug, alcohol testing
Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012
Two current high-profile legal cases, in which companies want to implement random testing of their employees for alcohol and/or drugs, may determine whether such testing expands in Canadian workplaces. At the centre of both cases is the need for a safe workplace versus privacy and human rights. In New Brunswick, Irving Pulp and Paper wants employees at its mill operations to undergo random alcohol tests but the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) is opposed. On Friday the case reached the Supreme Court of Canada. In Alberta, Suncor Energy is trying to bring in a random drug and alcohol testing program for employees and contractors at its oilsands operations in Fort McMurray. The CEP is resisting Suncor's efforts, with an arbitration hearing scheduled for today. Calgary lawyer Birch Miller, who specializes in this area of law, writes that these cases will indicate "whether random alcohol and drug testing policies have a future in Canada." Random drug testing arrived in Canada from the U.S., first for cross-border commercial truck and bus operations, as required by the U.S. government. In the U.S., where drug testing is federally regulated, random testing is prevalent everywhere, according to Peter Deines of CannAmm Occupational Testing Services, … Continue reading
