'Rise' in club drug treatment

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2012

14 November 2012 Last updated at 07:37 ET The number of people seeking treatment for so-called "club drugs" has risen in the past six years, according to the National Treatment Agency. Last year, 6,486 people were treated for substances such as ecstasy and ketamine - up from 4,656 in 2005-06. But, despite the rise in that period, the last 12 months has seen a fall in those treated for many such drugs. The report refers to those who sought help in a variety of ways, such as counselling and detoxification. The NTA estimates that around one million people used club drugs last year, although overall drug use has declined in England over the past six years. It said club drug users make up just 2% of adults in treatment and 10% of young people in specialist services. Its research suggests that ecstasy remains the most common club drug people receive treatment for. However, the number of new adults entering treatment halved, from around 2,000 in 2005-06 to just over 1,000 last year. It is clear that some club drug users are developing serious health problems and even dependency Excerpt from: 'Rise' in club drug treatment … Continue reading

New Book Tackles Pathological Dependency

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

Authors have their reasons for wanting to write a book. Dr. John B. Cranes is far from self-serving. The local psychiatrist too often sees patients with a common set of problems a self-defeating, all encompassing, often lethal dependence on unhealthy relationships. Because the problem continues to be so prevalent in his practice, Dr. Crane decided to pen Its Love Isnt It, Recognizing and Beginning to Heal From a Lifetime of Abuse. Its his care package to those trying to understand, and deal with, what he terms pathological dependency, which is not to be confused with co-dependency, about which much has been written. Comparing the two would be like comparing a common cold to having the bird flu, Dr. Crane said in a recent telephone interview. Pathological dependency is severe and has roots in childhood abuse. More often than not this acute form of dependency is passed on from one generation to the next, leading folks with no self-esteem to seek love and commitment from those who cant give it because theyre often dealing with issues and/or mental disorders of their own. These include bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, alcohol/drug abuse, schizophrenia and other maladies, all of which are also explained in … Continue reading

More club drug users need treatment

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

The number of people needing treatment for "club drugs" such as Ecstasy, ketamine and "meow meow" is creeping upwards. Overall drug use has declined in England over the past six years, but the number of people needing treatment for club drugs has risen, the National Treatment Agency (NTA) for Substance Misuse said. Club drugs are those typically used by people in bars and nightclubs or concerts and parties and include Ecstasy, ketamine, methamphetamine, GHB/GBL and mephedrone. While they cause a treatment problem for a small proportion of people and are unlikely to replace heroin and crack, they can cause serious physical and mental health problems, according to experts. In a newly-published report, the NTA said club drug users made up 2% of adults in treatment and 10% of young people in specialist services, but the number needing treatment could continue to rise. The report, Club Drugs: Emerging Trends and Risks, found around one million people were estimated to have used club drugs last year (2011/12). The number of people treated for club drugs was 6,486, up from 4,656 in 2005/06 - with over-18s rising from 3,122 to 4,479 in that period and those under-18 increasing from 1,534 to 2,007. Adovacates call for justice for drug dependent babies

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - East Tennessee Children's Hospital has received national attention since opening its neonatal abstinence unit in 2011 specially designed to care for babies suffering from drug withdrawal. The unit was built to hold 16. But since opening, it's been over capacity. "About 30 percent of our admissions are for NAS. When we opened the 16 bed private room area, we thought this would take care of all of our NAS babies. And that was a year ago, November 7, 2011. And since the day we opened, we haven't had an open bed down here," said nurse Carla Saunders. "We've begun to address that last year with a lot tougher laws on drug abuse as well as meth use, and we're trying to look at what's the next step. But we literally in Tennessee have an epidemic of prescription drug use and babies being born addicted and it's... we're better than that as a state and we're going looking at every way we can to address that," said Governor Bill Haslam. And while individuals who abuse drugs can be charged, the mothers who pass dependency to their babies while pregnant aren't. "In the child abuse statutes they have … Continue reading

Drug drop-off coming to police station

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prescription drug abuse is now officially an epidemic in this country. So after participating in a nationwide one-day drug drop-off program, the Georgetown Police Department has just been granted a waiver to run its own permanent prescription drug return program. On Sept. 29 this year, the Georgetown Police Department joined a nationwide one-day collaborative effort coordinated by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with state and local law enforcement agencies for dropping off prescription drugs. This past weekend, the department received word that they can now open the drug drop-off program to the public and keep it as a permanent feature in their lobby. Sgt. Scott Hatch monitors the Georgetown program with Reserve Officer Michael Broderick. The drop-off box, located in the lobby, just around the corner from the dispatchers office, is an official mailbox donated by the Georgetown Post Office. The mailbox needed some work, which was done by Officer Broderick, including the painting, said Hatch. Now that we have received a DEP extension of the waiver, the drop-off box [mailbox] has become a permanent fixture in our lobby and we are accepting returns of prescription medications 24 hours a … Continue reading

You are here HSBC Bank Hit By Huge Drug and Gun Scandal Britain's biggest bank HSBC has come under fire for allegedly opening offshore accounts for a list of high-profile criminals including drug and gun dealers. Claims that criminals have laundered the money are under a major HM & Revenue investigation after the tax authority received the information from a whistleblower. The list identified 4,388 people holding 699m in offshore current accounts, the Daily Telegraph reports. It is unknown whether the bank had reported the suspicious accounts to HMRC. We can confirm we have received the data and we are studying it. We receive information from a very wide range of sources which we use to ensure the tax rules are being respected," HMRC said. Clamping down on those who try to cheat the system through evading taxes and over-claiming benefits is a top priority for us, and we value the information we receive from the public and business community. The account holders are reportedly in Jersey, a British dependency off the coast of France which has its own currency and tax laws and a major offshore financial centre. Some of the criminals involved are believed to be Daniel Bayes, … Continue reading

Chromadex is a natural product company that examines these organic compounds in order to discover any medical use for them. Once they do, they create a patent on how to manufacture the compound with obtaining the rights of both the health claims and the patent itself. These ingredients are sold under the dietary supplement category through retail and other traditional marketing outlets. The 13-year old company has already tested thousands of products, creating over a dozen patents marketed across the world. First Alcohol and Drug Court hearings

Posted: Published on November 8th, 2012

Justice Minister Judith Collins has marked the first hearings at the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment (AODT) Court pilot sitting in Auckland and Waitakere District Courts today. Ms Collins says it is extremely pleasing the pilot Court is now up and running, helping to reduce re-offending by supporting offenders who make a serious commitment to change. "This AODT Court is a first for New Zealand. I am delighted we now have a Court that can deliver a new holistic approach to reducing re-offending. "The AODT Court gives offenders an opportunity to confront the drug and alcohol dependency that has fuelled their offending, giving them the tools and support they need to free themselves from a life of addiction. "Re-offending has fallen by almost 7 per cent over the past year. If we are to continue delivering results, we need to explore innovative new ways of working. The AODT Court is a perfect example of this in action," Ms Collins says. When the pilot Court has been running for a significant length of time, it will be evaluated for success in treatment outcomes, reduction in reoffending, and cost effectiveness.
