Middle Smithfield residents wary of treatment center
Posted: Published on March 28th, 2012
Buy This Photo Chris McDermott, an engineer from Riley Associates in Stroudsburg speaks to the crowd using this plan of the proposed drug treatment facility at the former Hillside Inn location at the Middle Smithfield Township municipal building during their meeting on Tuesday night, March 27, 2012.Melissa Evanko/Pocono Record March 28, 2012 Some residents expressed fears Tuesday night about neighborhood security if a proposed voluntary drug and alcohol treatment program opens at the Hillside Inn resort property. Others said a drug treatment facility such as that proposed by Pyramid Healthcare is badly needed. Pyramid, based in Altoona, proposes a 60-bed facility at Hillside, off Frutchey Road. The facility might eventually expand to 110 beds. Assurances by Jason Hendricks, Pyramid's vice president of operations, that nearly all patients are driven to and from the facility and must give 48-hours notice before signing themselves out, drew skepticism. "A lot of them end up having to go back into treatment again and again and again," Paul Giblin of Prairie Lane said. "If patients walk away, towards nearby Route 209, they will likely say, 'Gee, what can I get over there? I'm looking for drugs.'" Patricia Griffin of Turkey Ridge Road said there is … Continue reading

Drug of choice's chilling effects
Posted: Published on March 27th, 2012
It is easy to get hold of, cheap to buy and the side-effects seem pretty attractive - until you get hooked. Methamphetamine, simply known as meth, is highly addictive and the latest national study into the drug shows a spike in its use. This comes as no surprise to those close to the Illawarra drug scene who say methamphetamine is now the region's party drug of choice - one which can have a "devastating" effect on young people. In its latest report, the Australian Institute of Criminology's Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) program found methamphetamine use was on the rise. In the first nine months of 2011, 21 per cent of police detainees tested positive to methamphetamine - up from 16 per cent in 2010 and 13 per cent in 2009. Lake Illawarra police crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Michael McLean described methamphetamine as a "prominent" drug in the region. "I think certainly over the years anecdotally my experience is that yes, it is more commonly available than other drugs, but that changes," he said. Of the three main forms, crystal meth was by far the most popular among Illawarra users, Insp McLean said. He said in contrast to … Continue reading

Drug Use by Teens is Topic of March 27 Forum
Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2012
The use of prescription and other drugs by teens will be the subject of a special parent and community forum on Tues., March 27 at the Aurora Theatre. The event, scheduled to run from 7 to 9 p.m., will include professionals in the field of substance abuse treatment. They will speak on the addiction process, the toll drugs can take on individuals and families, and treatment options. The proportion of young people using any illicit drug has been rising gradually over the past four years, according to the 2011 Monitoring the Future survey of U.S. secondary school students, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In 2011, 50 percent of high school seniors reported having tried an illicit drug at some time, 40 percent used one or more drugs in the past 12 months, and 25 percent used one or more drugs in the prior 30 days, the study found. Among eighth-graders, 20 percent reported having tried an illicit drug, 15 percent had used in the past 12 months, and 8.5 percent had used in the prior 30 days. In an interview with the Advertiser, East Aurora Police Chief Ron Krowka noted that the local area is not immune … Continue reading

Drug abuse & addiction a rising concern
Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2012
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A recent community health assessment by the Tippecanoe County Health department shows that the local community's largest health concern is drug abuse in the area. "Over 50% of the people that responded to the health assessment said that drug abuse was a big problem in our community," said Ron Cripe, the head of the Tippecanoe County Health Department. It's become such a large problem that one private treatment facility chose the Tippecanoe County area to build its latest facility, out of several sites across the nation. "The community has been under served for quite some time for mental health needs, chemical dependency needs," said Barb Walls, Director of Nursing at Sycamore Springs. But it wasn't clear to Walls just how great that need was until the day the new treatment facility opened up its doors. "We had people waiting when the doors were unlocked to be assessed for our services. And as I said, we knew there was a need in our community but I don't think any of us realized it would be that overwhelming that quickly," said Walls. Walls said demand for the services offered at Sycamore Springs continues to grow, at a rate … Continue reading

No job too big for one-legged handyman
Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2012
Chin Wei Fui is a much loved volunteer at several welfare homes under the care of Persatuan Rumah Caring Kajang. From the porch to backyard and even up on the roof of these homes, he attends to all the maintenance so that the residents can live there comfortably. Such chores are strenuous but Chin, who has only one leg, does them with a grin. He only received a prosthesic leg last September. Before that, he was moving about the homes using crutches. The burn scar that covers 70% of his body used to frighten the new residents at these homes, but they soon felt at ease with this hardworking 45-year-old. Chin feels that he should work harder, because he has lost more than 20 years of his life to drug dependency. He also does painting and other tough jobs that require him to work under the sun. He gives all his earnings to the drug rehabilitation centre he graduated from and keeps only RM200 a month for himself. I think giving back to the centre that saved my life means much more than spending money on myself. The centre brought me to my faith, showed me love, hope and my … Continue reading

TOWN HALL: New bill would improve drug laws (poll)
Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2012
The war on drugs has ruined lives, packed our prisons and hurt our economy. Drugs abuse is a scourge on society, but our efforts at a remedy have failed and may be worse than the problem. Senate Bill 163, which enjoys bipartisan support of Republicans, Democrats, conservatives and liberals, would help move Colorado in the right direction. The bill is sponsored by conservative Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, and liberal Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder among others. It also has the enthusiastic support of the Independence Institute, Colorados renowned free-market public-policy think tank. This is not a right bill, a left bill, a Republican bill, a Democrat bill, a soft-on-crime bill or a tough-on-crime bill. It is a common sense bill that will improve society and reduce drug addiction. The bill, very simply, would reduce possession of four grams or less of any schedule 1 or II controlled substance, such as marijuana or cocaine, or two grams or less of methamphetamine (schedule II), from a felony to a misdemeanor. By reducing incarceration the bill would save money, which the bill would require state government to reinvest into substance-abuse treatment programs throughout Colorado. Research of a one-year period by Colorados Division of Criminal … Continue reading

No free gym passes for Shropshire drug users, says council leader
Posted: Published on March 20th, 2012
Drug users will not get free use of Shropshire Council gyms and swimming pools, the authoritys leader made clear today. Councillor Keith Barrow spoke after a council report suggested former users of the drug GHB be given free use of council leisure facilities as part of their recovery. But some people had misunderstood the authoritys intentions and thought people who misused drugs were getting free hand outs for breaking the law, said Councillor Barrow. I want to be absolutely clear that we have never suggested giving free swimming and gym membership to people who are misusing drugs, he said today. A task and finish group, set up to look at the issue of drug dependency, came forward with an idea to encourage people, who had already been through rehabilitation, by giving them the opportunity to attend certain free sessions at leisure centres, to help give them a new direction. While that is entirely different from handing out free gym passes to dangerous criminals, which is what a lot of people seemed to think was being suggested. I completely understand peoples concerns. The idea was suggested in a report to the healthy communities scrutiny committee last week. It followed a study … Continue reading
